The Real Mecha: Hankook Mirae Technology Method-2 Prototype Testing

  • Опубликовано:  5 месяцев назад
  • South Korean robotics manufacturer Hankook Mirae Technology debuted its first prototype piloted mech, the Method-2.

Method-2 stands 13-feet tall, weighs 1.3 tons and wields a pair of 286-pound, motion-tracking metal arms. Hankook Mirae considers this robot the world's first manned bipedal robot built to work in extreme hazardous areas where humans cannot go unprotected. If you consider this as something from Transformers, Robocop or Terminator, you should know that the company has spent more than $200 million since 2014 to develop the mech with the help of Hollywood SFX designer, Vitaly Bulgarov, whose credits include all the above mentioned movies.

The Method-2 it is more likely to serve as a testbed for emerging mech technologies, rather to be employed in the field anytime soon. Instead, the giant machine could find use in everything from construction and cargo loading to military and SAR operations.

The mechanical suit will reportedly assist in cleaning up and restoring Fukushima after the 2011 nuclear energy accident. To help out in the disaster area, it will need to undergo a few modifications. For instance, the upper body and arm of the robot could be mounted on a wheeled platform with its own built-in power source, and the cockpit would have to be absolutely airtight so as to not let in any radioactive waves.

who here thinks they should weaponize this and challenge Japan and US mechs for epic mech battle. Heard China one it way too and challenging the US's mech.

i had the same thought myself! With China's new monkey warrior robot entering the fray with Megabots and Suidobashi, I feel as though we're really missing out on a big opportunity to have a TRUE bipedal mech in the early days of the mech league. I know these vids are years old but Method would need to improve on the balance and movement, as well as figure out a way to add an internal powersource, armor, and improve the load capacity on those arms; i don't like the way the arms move when it takes a step it makes me think that it's already approaching the load capacity with nothing attached or grasped.

Why not use hydraulics running off a turbine-driven pump?

Pretty poor music choice. It's like I'm watching a C-List side villain rather than a great robotic achievement.

These guys build a mech, but don't know to make it swing its arms when it walks?

    • John Rambo

Virgil Goucher Its a work in progress. Plus, theres a reason they probably didnt do that ,but we dont know because were noy the freaking engineers who designed this from the ground up.

Amazing tech from a robotics and fluid biomimetic standpoint. From a military standpoint, me and a guy with a log held between us could knock it down and make it useless. But I am still impressed. :)
