Spider-Man: Far From Home | VFX Breakdown | Framestore

  • Published on Oct 2, 2019
  • For Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far From Home, we took on the dazzling ‘Illusion Battle,’ a mesmirising sequence which sees Mysterio play on Peter’s very worst fears by conjuring psychedelic environments, freakish characters and a dramatic narrative. Working with Production VFX Supervisor Janek Sirrs, the team crafted the story and design of the sequence as well as creating the VFX.

I thought I would add to this as reading the comments there's alot of the same stuff. I worked on the film at Framestore earlier this year.
    1) why is the Audi car cg?
    A) basically the original Audi was an older version of the car.. Audi then did a facelift version of the car that they wanted to see in the film.. they pay some bills and write some cheques so in it goes. The cg car was built and tracked to the original plate and replaced the original footage of the car. It also provided a nice interaction point for spidey as he opened the door.. and also provided good bounce light and reflections for spidey further integrating him into final shot.
    2) why does spidey look so cg.. why not use actors
    A) if you saw Tom Holland in the suit you would actually laugh.. on his own he's quite slender and wirey but still toned and muscular. In a suit with zips up his back and the fabric folding an awful lot around his joints and shoulders it just looks very strange and like a man in a suit and laughable.
With cg the result is arguably better providing a char closer to what we expect to see of a photoreal comic book.. not that of a person in a suit. Also the illusion really does jump if they cut from a cg acrobatic Spiderman to a person in a suit.. you really do see the cut and get pulled out of the moment.
To add.. alot of the shots where we see Tom Holland's head in the costume.. the whole thing is cg as opposed to him stood there in the suit. They pretty much replace all but his head. But if you saw the raw plate with him stood in costume it feels dorky.. almost like a bad "kickass" suit.
This 100 crazed sequence came into the studio halfway through production.. literally 3 to 4 months from the end.. Framestore team had to produce 100 shots.. many of them changed and adjusted as time went on. For example when I started on the shot there was about 12 shots that showed spidey getting shot.. then falling onto a web where a giant spider tries to attack him. It was quite nightmarish.
Another scene featured spidey getting caught in bubbles and drowning in a pile of Mysterio glass heads.. another shot showed him tumbling across a ribbon like floor.. alot of this stuff was heavily inspired by the "drunk" scene from the original animated dumbo!
Many of the shots changed and were adjusted right up until the final weeks to ensure the story flowed through the shots whilst at the same time spatially remaining similar to what spidey was experiencing in the real world.. that alone was a challenge for the team.
Hope this helps explain some bits for people. I've probably missed some stuff but hopefully it shows that alot more goes on behind what you guys initially see 👍🏽

I love that CG is a main theme in the movie. That's so creative and a nice way to modernize a comic book villain that used magic. I love this movie.

Amazing but I still have a problem buying normal human movement like in 0:40 why's that does it has to do with framerate or maybe motion capture isn't capturing everything?

The CGI was pretty good in this one. Except for a few shots in which the "100% CG Spiderman" looks fake af. Mostly due to incorrect body movements. But overall a good looking movie.

Well they had to finish the movie in less than a year. So there's that.
Also wait untill you see that almost the entire 3rd act is CG.

0:45 why does this need to be CG?

    • anthony mcgrath
      anthony mcgrath Month ago

I worked on the film at Framestore. The Audi had a facelift update but was produced after the footage was shot.. so a cg version was tracked to the older car version.. rendered and composited in.
Also the car provided reflections and bounce light for spidey as it pulled up next to him.
It was a pain for the team as the shot was more work than it needed to be but Audi sign some cheques as well as Marvel.. so in it went 👍🏽

While I think the CG was mostly well done, there is so much of it that sometimes elements stand out because not enough time was spent on them. A lot of the fight scenes had a CG feel to half of the shots. There needs to be live action surrounding cg scenes or it just becomes really "detached"

dude the car was CGI? but.. WHY? it could have been Tom with a real car, hell even on green screen if you didn't want them to go shoot wherever it was but what a waste of time and effort.. oh and btw as much as the illusion scene was fun to watch and maybe technically well done, it really felt like it belonged to spiderverse movie more than this one, way too cartoony in a way to make it blend with the rest of the movie.. so yeah fun to watch but overall it was bad, like the movie in a way
