  • In this weeks episode, we explore this lovely family home which has been constructed using shipping containers. Named the South Coast Container House, this home has been sustainably constructed using four shipping containers and has also been extended to enclose communal spaces. At 95 square meters (1000 square feet) this home is capable of sleeping 10 people and has been divided into a main 85 square meter home, with an additional 15 square meter sleep-out made from a single 20ft shipping container.

This is the goldilocks house. Not too big, not too small. In considering building a small home for myself, I had been thinking 800sq ft would be the right size .If your brother-in-law is an architect and the king of built-ins. 600 sq ft looks perfectly spacious. I love the inverted corner window with a big overhang to cut down on direct sun. It's a great feature for a hot sunny climate. This comment was meant to go on the wabi-sabi episode. RUclip autoplayed while I was typing.

This home has so much potential. However, it feels cold and lacks personality. So much more could have been done for $350,000. I think the outside architecture is the most interesting. The inside was disappointing. It felt too sterile and devoid of humanness. The children’s room had no color or anything engaging. It was uneventful. 🤔 Have you seen the Julia Roberts movie “Sleeping with the Enemy.” I got those vibes. And, the bathroom looked like a prison shower. I liked the living room and sliding glass doors. The lesson for me is the containers are sterile, and I personally think you must add color, texture, and personality to warm such a challenging living space. Bryce, thanks for giving us unique projects to consider and draw ideas from. Your channel is wonderful! 💕

Love that Bryce is including small homes (actually an average size home last century) as well as tiny homes . It's not practical for everyone to have a tiny home . Small homes like this built from containers is such a great alternative to the usual, inefficient brick veneer mc mansion. I also think to have had this built and up to code with a "granny flat" for $350,000 AU is pretty reasonable for Australia.

I really like the mini houses and have been looking for sometime into getting one. I like the idea of low cost and also using less energy to heat etc however my biggest obstacle so far is finding land where I can.put the house. Urban Land is crazy expensive and rural rustic land I'm being told I can't put a house on... I'm in Spain ... Castilla. Any suggestions? Not to mention that some villages here won't even allow you having a small house.

Really what a cool house. Artistically it just blows my mind and satisfies the minimalist in me but it still had enough places to hide family stuff. Very neat. I wonder if it would work out well in a cold area though like in a mountain area. And what about meeting codes, it must have been difficult. I wish I knew the cost of the project.

The owner really seemed like he was trying hard to sell this place to the viewers and it's a stunning place but at the end I understood why he was pushing hard... $350k for 4 containers!!! Ouch. It's an incredible space but man, that's not cheap.

One question I've always had about shipping containers is ... why are there so many of them. Why are they taken out of use? Is there something wrong with them, or are they making a profit by selling them? How is it that people get hold of these shipping containers and they are not resused for ... shipping?

  • justgivemethetruth
    justgivemethetruth 17 days ago +1

It's also very clever how the ends of some of the containers were used as doors to storage, like a storage unit. This guy, or whoever from his company is really a good engineer/designer. It appears like the house is mostly windows, structure and insulation enclosing the shipping containers that function as structural pieces to build out the interior. This is by far the nicest shipping container design I've ever seen, plus it looks very efficient and relatively inexpensive. Great video!

  • justgivemethetruth
    justgivemethetruth 17 days ago

It appears that the shipping containers are used as the internal load bearing pieces with spaces between them that open up the space and allow for more flexibility in design, like the hall or what looks like a hall at 4:13. Really well done design.

  • justgivemethetruth
    justgivemethetruth 17 days ago

How do you attach the insulation and cladding to the container? These are really well done and they make the best of the shipping container properties.

I completely understand the trend of building with sustainable renewable products. Eg, recycled timber sliding doors, timber deck etc. But how are shipping containers renewable or good for the environment at all? They don't look second hand, they look brand new. Wouldn't everyone be better off building a home completely out of timber? Then planting more trees to renew the timber?
