  • Is it a myth that bananas were once used successfully as engine oil by JC Baudot and Jacques Seguela in their Citroën 2CV as they crossed the Atacama desert in 1959? Let’s find out! We’ll run several tests to include a 30-minute engine run with banana “BW-30” as engine oil to see if the engine will survive.

I must say, although this is a very cool experiment, you have to consider that there must’ve been some amount of real oil left in the crankcase for the explorers, this could possibly explain how they may have made it out.. revisit?

I bet a water cooled engine could run much longer if thermostat was removed to keep the temperature down. My car had a lot of water buildup in the oil when the thermostat was stuck open just a tiny crack. Looked like chocolate syrup.

Czech travellers Hanzelka and Zikmund used bananas instead of oil already ca in 1947 in their aircooled V8 Tatra 87 during their journey around the World when they got stranded somewhere in Africa. Apparently one of the locals advised them to do so, perhaps a common knowledge in these areas at that time. Engine worked fine until they were able to get some oil. Interested readers can find more in their book "Africa: The Dream and the Reality".

The key seems to be keeping the temperature low enough that the banana doesn't burn too much and I do wonder if peeling them might have been a mistake, there's a lot of fibre in that peel that would help in water retention and viscosity.

Has to be a myth, in a vehicle it wouldn't make it passed the oil pump strainer, it would clog .......... and where should they have found a blender to get the bananas broken down to anything near being a fluid?
Yeah, this one has to be a silly myth
