The Sony 400mm f/2.8 GM Hands ON! My 1st Impressions.

    Pre Order at B&H Photo:
Had a chance to test the new Sony 400mm f/2.8 GM and it is a killer lens IF you are a sports pro or wildlife pro. I am NOT a sports shooter so in my hands it is not being used to it's full potential, but I can tell you that the bokeh, sharpness, color, contrast and everything about this lens is amazing.
I had my ISO set to high, I shot only JPEG.... but I still had a blast with the A9 and 400mm as it gave me a chance to do something I never get to do.

That hood is so comically large! Love the first look and impressions, can't wait to shoot with one someday!

and how you managed to get this in your hands?

  • Benjamin Kanarek

With only one important front element....lighter, because they don't use any large elements. All of the elements except for the front element are at the back of the camera. Some serious correction needed. Your images are quite amazing! Bravo!

Anybody else notice when he says “shooting it on the m9” instead of the “a9” at 5:32?

Very nice shots for sure, but I am skeptical. You're repeating Sony's claims about this being the best 400mm ever ("beats Canon & Nikon" etc.). Does it serve viewers to just repeat Sony's claims with no independent verification? Why travel all the way to New York to "test" a lens that you have no interest in?

I only review items I like and enjoy. I have said that for eight years. This is why you do not see me reviewing all cameras or lenses. I use them, but when I think that they are just average, I send them back. This is not a review at all, but an experience with it, and that was a positive experience. DO you think Sony would let 15 reviewers use the lens if it was crap? It's $12k for a reason, and focuses in an INSTANT, has lovely Bokeh, is crazy sharp, offers great color and contrast and will be a treat for those who shoot sports. What is not to like? Besides the price? I would never buy one for me as I would never need a lens like this but it is lighter than the C &N, and performs better. Are we supposed to lie and say the lens is crap? Lol. Hmmmm.

Hey Leica, this is what a 12k lens has to look like....

  • Alan McDade

Lol with a $12k lens why would you need a rain cover. Oh it’s a Sony and they made it lighter, I get it

Alan, because only an idiot would bring a 12 thousand dollar lens out into a thunderstorm.

    • Steve Huff
      Steve Huff  Year ago +1

Because it was supposed to THUNDERSTORM as I said in the video. Funny as a guy down from e was shooting a Nikon 400 and had a rain cover, as did the video guys. You tend to want one when a thunderstorm is forecast. The Sony is just as, if not more, weather sealed than the C & N lenses. Lighter is GOOD, as is sharper, better color performance and smoother bokeh ; )

Alan McDade Canon and Nikons need a rain cover too. There is no practical difference in water resistants.

No it can be used on the others so I mis spoke. I should have said it that on the A9, it will be the best it can be. The A9 was made for this lens.
