One of the best groups of all time!! Loved their music growing up, and still do today. Was flipping through the radio stations in the car today and heard this song. This is one you just have to turn up and sing your heart out to.

Sam Cooke will always be the smoother, original, but he would be proud of what the spinners did with it.

I completely agree. With both of you.

    • James Fife

Agree, the great Sam Cooke would like what the Spinners did with his iconic song. It's a more up tempo dance version, but Sam's still reigns supreme with me! Cheers!

Not only did they do a Sam Cooke song....
I love Sam okay, but these miraculous men outshined Sam on “ This “ song. Especially when the high notes went higher at the end.
The Spinners. Man ! Great singers !

The Spinners added the - "I've Loved you for a Long time" to the song. Sam Cooke's version kicked ass in its day ;-)

Sam's version was softer, more lovelier. I remember this version as child. Sam's was before my time but Sam's version is much more romantic. It's like a prayer.

On this day in 1980 {September 20th} the Spinners performed "Cupid/I've Love You For A Long Time" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'...
At the time the song was at #93 on Billboard's Top 100, it was also it's nineteenth and last week on the chart, ten weeks earlier it had peaked at #4 {for 3 weeks}...
It reached #5 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart and #4 on the United Kingdom's singles chart...
Between 1961 and 1995 the Detroit quintet had twenty-nine records on the Top 100, seven made the Top 10 with one reaching #1*, "Then Came You", a duet with Dionne Warwick, for one week on October 20th, 1974...
    * They just missed having a second #1 record when "Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me, Girl" peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} in 1980, the 2 weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for both those weeks was "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd...

sam cooke version is better as it does a better job of evoking yearning and heartache. this version is too upbeat and happy, like they already got the girl

  • S Hanlon
    S Hanlon 4 years ago +54

This is my favorite version. It's not the same as Sam Cooke, it's funky, it's disco, it's motown, they made it their own. Not to take anything away from Sam Cooke. Some songs just need a kickstart, a little electricity. You won't be strutting to the original of this. That's for sure.

It's a rare thing to like the cover better than the original but I agree. I actually heard this one first as I'm 54. I think in general, that is the version people like best. Does something to the memory bank. Good feelings.
