I once read an article saying that the idea is to make scoring 100% practically unattainable. The point in making the test is not to make it passable, but rather it is a way to sort out the best of the best.
Lots of Korean students are excellent in performance, but still, it's a challenge for the top schools in the country to decide whom to accept if they all simply got an "A."
So I think questions like this are the difference between going to a top 3 school or going to some other school in Seoul.

I live in South Korea but I go to an international school. People that I know who go to normal Korean schools say that they never had fun. My mum does tutoring and when one of her students got every question right except for one her mum shouted and hit the student. My mum said she sees that a lot and complains a bit to the mums but then they get rude to my mum......

tbh these questions arent even that hard LIKE im 13 and i got both correct BUT LIKE this is so extra???? i dont get why they need to just shove so much vocabulary in there??? my school gives questions that are more challenging than these but with lesser vocabulary and,,, lesser chunks of words just shoved all in there....these questions arent even hard, theyre just incredibly stress inducing and time wasting, how,,,,

Well, as a Korean I may help you guys to understand the situation. The reason why all the questions are weird and unpractical is that we have relative evaluation system. The grading system of Korean SAT provides for 9 ranks based on students' relative standing among all others taking the same test. That means it isn't important how much points you get, but how much points you get more than others. So, the test is designed to classify grades properly, and necessarily the level has been more difficult. I do have complaints about this and English education in Korea because everyone is obsessed by grades, not by real English ability. Who in reality speaks like Cambridge textbook? I mean, if we get good grades in SAT, but we can't communicate with English speaker in everyday life, what's the point of English education? I hope that we have some alternatives to resolve this problem.

I have been an ESL teacher in South Korea for 5 years. I love this country but I HATE their approach to English testing and studying.
The questions on this test are difficult enough for people who speak English! I cant imagine if you're a foreign student.
English is a very complex language and most of these kids dont even get to use what they've learned.

I can definitely see how this would be difficult for a non native speaker, but I think it's really a matter of confidence and strategy. If you can maximize your personal vocabulary and focus on what you're sure you know, you can piece together a general idea. And the idea that the incorrect rates are higher than random guessing seems to indicate that students doubt guessing as a strategy, preferring to instead rack their brains for any answer...

Usually they have one or two questions like that in English section. The reason is that they have to make grade difference between scores. There should be less than 4% of people who gets grade 1(the highest one). So they make those questions to make students fail. If you don't mind going to school outside of Seoul(where half of population lives) you don't have get a grade 1 in English :)

Okay so the thing is... you have to have to answer one question under one minute. They didn’t have time limit, but I can see that they are very smart. The other thing is that in Korea, every questions count. After taking the tests, you estimate your number and write applications to the colleges that you want. You can write only to three places. One wrong answer will have you apply to UVA instead of Harvard.

And this is one of the reasons why many of the people who graduate in Korea can't speak English. Instead of preparing for function they prepared for a test. It's sad the way my students burry their faces in their English books. Once they are in middle school the English books and lessons are pretty much trash. However the elementary English books are pretty good lol.

I am one of high school students who have to study to take SAT to get in University in Korea, and I am feeling bad everyday because of all of subjects that have to memorise.
So we sleep less than 5hours( of course many students sleep more than 5~6hours) to do homeworks and to study. And we study at school from 8:30am to 10pm (13~14hours everyday).
Well, almost every Korean high school student HATE the English test because as you guys watched this video, all of questions are TOTALLY difficult to understand what writer want to say. But we have only 70minutes to solve 45 questions. In other words, we have 1~2minutes to solve ONE questions.
Korean students think not only English test is DIFFICULT but also Korean test and Math test is DIFFICULT. Haha
I hope Korean students feel free from studying really hard oneday😊
