TBH the math & science questions are the real challenging ones. Also, while some questions are simply setting students up to fail (or what they call "differentiating questions", where it's meant to sieve out the A's from the rest), it is actually pretty manageable if the time given is reasonably sufficient, if the syllabus wasn't so condensed & hardcore and if the method of testing was catered to specifically test the understanding of students instead of a certain set of "model answers". This is why I admire the US/UK's way of testing students, because it tests students' understanding in a rather reasonable fashion.

Also, try Singapore's A Level standard questions from local JC's (junior colleges), especially the H2 subjects. The actual exam questions from Cambridge are much more manageable but the questions tested in local school exams (under insane timed conditions and answer requirements) really gives your brain and arm a very good workout.

It is worth mentioning that most JC students sleep only about 5-6 hours everyday, and our workload is really intense. In fact this might already happen during Secondary 4 when all Singaporean students are preparing for the O Level exams. And though Singapore's education system is admittedly slightly better balanced than say, South Korea, China and/or Japan, it's still rather difficult to do well enough to get into a good university, and not getting into a university is like an end-game for JC students, unlike their polytechnic counterparts who possess industry skills & experience that are sought after by employers. A university degree often correlates to better employment opportunities, and that's why the need to do well academically is so important in most Asian countries. Sad truth.

Ok well as a Chinese myself you know how ppl talk badly about Chinese bc of their culture and lack of refinement (some). Americans some are obsessed with Japanese gaming and Japanese anime. But when it comes to like actually coexisting with another ethnicity I find Koreans are able to mingle more with Americans. My dad said bc America basically had influence in Korea due to the war. Whereas other Asian cultures are still more closed off. That would explain why Indians are more successful in western society bc the British colonized them too

when i took the cpe Cambridge test for international students the questions were a lot like this, i didnt find them particularly difficult, its more of an organizing your thinking process type of task, i mean, the text will inevitably point you towards the right answer, you just have to get past the riddle-like structure

O_O Are these questions maybe outdated or something among those lines? Because I can solve these questions easily, and I'm only 12? Because questions tested in examinations can get harder as years pass and the syllabus might change? I'm not trying to brag or show how great my knowledge is but I'm honestly curious? Because this is a Korean test and I always hear from people that "Oh you think this is hard? Wait till you see Korean tests!" but these questions were relatively easy to solve? Though English is my best subject and I read classical literature a lot...

I respect Korean culture and feel sorry about the pressure. But it's not a exclusive korean issue, here in Brazil students of a lower social class (the majority of our population) studies hours and hours to be accepted into a college or get a good scholarship. And that's a big problem, because in countries like South Korea, USA, Canada and others, public schools are really good and you shall have time to save money to college, in Brazil public schools aren't good at all. And a public university is REALLY competed and hard to get in.

I study higher level English in school and damn, that was an excessive amount of difficult words. The aim of a language is to be able to speak fluently with a native speaker of said language, especially at a high school level, and I can guarantee that no one uses half of those words on a day to day basis, or even at all.

  • tomasruckett
    tomasruckett 13 дней назад

I found both of these questions pretty simple, but only because I've spent my entire life speaking one language and becoming familiar with the nuances and subtleties of English. The idea that this is a foreign language portion of the test shows how unreasonable the expectations for Korean students are. Then again, if your goal is to get into a top US school, maybe this is a good indicator of how ready you are? In my opinion, unless you're studying English literature or philosophy, there's no reason to knowing this stuff. Especially if you're studying the sciences, this type of jargon could totally slow you down.

Then I realized that it was a foreign language test. That is insanely hard for absolutely no reason other than to set students up to fail.

The last question was not too bad. It was more of a maths problem. In maths you have to find the important information and use it to answer the question. The missing part of the text was talking about the ideal case for using time and energy to gain assets. The ideal case was going to be using zero amount of time and energy and getting an infinity amount of assets.
