Not enough food? People are so addicted to carbs they don't even realize that you don't need to eat...all day. You have fat stores, and ketosis is a better fuel source anyways.

Failed recently. Hurt my wrist but I was wearing gloves so it could have been worse. Small bries and cut on my face as I hit tarmac. Can you imagine how bad that would have been if I wasn't' wearing a helmet?! Lid for the win.

Would esp. love to hear lectures on technique from Blake and Marty- that would be brilliant.

My biggest mistake so far: Coming from a moto background I thought since I’m used to really ruff and rutted at speeds mountain biking would just be easier. It’s really a different skill set. A bicycle just doesn’t handle anything like Motocross bike. Lots of mistakes: Leaning way to far into ruts no power to come out, just momentum. Much less traction bike is so light. Completely different in the air for jumps, bike feels so small and not as safe. 60ft jump is pretty small for moto but now it’s really scary doing a ten foot jump on MTB. Steep and tech been hard also, everything seems harder going slower if that makes sense. Much less gear is worn also so I’ve been getting wrecked. That’s why I love it so much though, so much fun learning something new and so many places to explore. So great when I’m not crashing 🤕😁

    *Seeking Bike Buying Advice*
    My Criteria:
    - intermediate rider
    - not into racing, taking air, extremes
    - into trails and some downhill (intermediate level)
    - don't want to pay more than $2000 US ($2600 CAD) - used or new
    - open to 29", 27.5" or 26" tires (including switchout option like the Scott Genius)
    - Norco Sight and Giant Trance were mentioned to me (just to get it started)
Your mission, should you choose to accept, involves offering specific models (year, model name, et),
why you think it could work for me, and if used - what you would pay for it if you were buying it for yourself.
    Thanks in Advance!

An article from CNET, really? They say that bike helmets make cars feel safer around bicyclists so they drive closer. A random TED Talks guy says scientists are split 50/50 right down the middle on whether or not they work.. lmao please. Look at any sports with helmets and tell me they are useless. Also he "insisted that some research found that cycle helmets actually cause more brain damage". My god, headbutt a rock with a helmet and then without and tell me which is causing you more brain damage. If you still argue this point afterwards, it just shows the brain damage was there to begin with :P

And essentially... Their number one tip for newbies, as always, is to spend waaaay too much money on your setup and forget about FUN.
Honestly, if you are a newbie the most important thing is that you get started and have fun doing it. Don't overspend because in 9 out of 10 cases. People that buy all that expensive shit end up not wanting to ride anyways because it becomes too much for them.
Just get STARTED, then you can go on spending sprees when you've realized what it is you actually want.

Well, that's how it all got started. You don't think mountain bikes emerged fully formed with suspensions and rear mech clutches,d o you? It started with people taking crappy old bikes and doing insane things on them.

    • Noah Bannister
      Noah Bannister 3 месяца назад

Ahh yes but you can’t have much fun on a Walmart spec bike can ya? With the chain slipping while pedaling, Surprise automatic shifting, not shifting correctly, Front forks with 10mm of travel, bottoming out on a pebble and non existent brakes... Haha

    • Matthew Leo
      Matthew Leo 4 месяца назад

Yeah, that dropper post is great, but it'll set you back $250. But dropping your seat on a steep descent, learning to do basic maintenance, that's pretty sound advice. A helmet is even more necessary than it is on the road, and gloves and proper shorts will improve your comfort and enjoyment.
I was surprised at the knee pad recommendation, but I suppose if you're doing slopestyle stunts sure you need that. If you are descending a downhill racer speeds you might even want body armor. But a newbie taking his sub $1000 hardtail out on the trail?
Likewise the advice for taking food and water is probably not relevant to a beginner, who isn't likely up to the duration where those would make a big difference. I recently did a two hour ride in 98F (37 C) temperatures, and I drank twelve ounces of water with 1.5 g of salt added, but normally I wouldn't bring water at all for a ride that length.
