Digital humans that look just like us | Doug Roble

  • Published on May 28, 2019
  • In an astonishing talk and tech demo, software researcher Doug Roble debuts "DigiDoug": a real-time, 3-D, digital rendering of his likeness that's accurate down to the scale of pores and wrinkles. Powered by an inertial motion capture suit, deep neural networks and enormous amounts of data, DigiDoug renders the real Doug's emotions (and even how his blood flows and eyelashes move) in striking detail. Learn more about how this exciting tech was built -- and its applications in movies, virtual assistants and beyond.

We're about to mess the entire world up with this deception, and why? It's so damn cooool to be able to talk to a computer. Damn those geeks, can't they find some real friends...
Nobody will trust no one, but the movies are gonna look awesome! Sometimes the smart people can be really immature.

he's right. nothing has changed, (but everythings changed) if you can't spot bots n catfish n faceapps n deepfakes and photoshop photos by now, yeah, you'll be on your paranoid edge of the catfish boat for quiet some time to come.
but..... when you can see past all those inabilities, you might just see all the ability and magic and amazaballs that's just transformed the human campfire, perhaps like nothing else has besides computers themselves.............
as i sit here, in tears, of awe and amazement, i can't help but tremble and quiver , thinking, where will this take us next? we're worried about people.... but this smells like the potential of not only changing our perception of reality, but in fact reality itself

This level of technology warrants great concern. If we’re worried about “fake news” now, imagine the kind of chaos fake digital press conferences, interviews etc, can cause? When a political or business leader is falsely and intentionally impersonated? Not good. We’re not ready.

@Janna 7 Ten years ago I would have thought like you. We live in a time of ignorance and widespread confusion . It is actually affecting the planet as a whole.
What damage does a flat earthers do? Unclear, but they disbelieve all science and anything they don't see with their eyes. What damage does a climate denier do? Measurable and increasing every year.
Giving people more reasons to disbelieve evidence based research is one of the most dangerous technologies to be developing at this time in history.

    • Janna 7
      Janna 7 3 months ago

As a major geek I would love this technology if applied in games and movies like in the movie Ready Player One. It's not harmless but so is everything else in this world. This is just one of the many technologies that can be so incredibly beautiful if used correctly but dangerous if abused by humans. In the end it's not the technology we should worry about but the dark side of human nature.

A lot of people are saying this could be used by governments to manipulate or lie to people but i think that the technology itself is not the problem but the theoretical government's in this scenario so we should be working on a better government system instead of fearing a technology that is inevitably going to exist with or without "evil governments". Technology isn't bad it's how we use it. So let's make it really hard to use it in a harmful or deceptive way.

  • Peter Martin

Cedric Price said, "Technology is the answer. But what is the Question." Perhaps we need to question why people such as Doug Roble seem to get more excited about fake humans than real humans.

  • Bree 30
    Bree 30 3 months ago

No, this is wrong, can you not see how dangerous this is?.... Fraud, stolen identity, the lack of need for the actual presence of people. The line between what is real & what is fake must be kept, it must be maintained.
Yes, your excited, but you're also extremely short sited & narrow minded. Progression is one thing, but being able to create & actually choosing to do so are two completely different things. It will have terrible consequences to all, what was that you said... "serious and real concerns"?
This entire lecture is strictly structured with the intention to brainwash viewer's with the hopes & promises of "not aging".. that's insane.

  • Hải Anh Nguyễn

I am so excited for this! I wish someday instead of calling each other we can “really” sit side by side and spread love through hug or kiss or touch:) I think it will decrease the issue of “living online” too much bc we can be online but still feel just like in reality.

Interesting but im def scared. Imagine wat governments could do with this tech. If someone of power dies and they could use the digital face to dupe the population.
