In our new quest to find the best X470 AM4 motherboards, we start with the Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 by analyzing its PCB & VRM, then dive into the overclocking, power, and current capabilities of the Ryzen+ / Ryzen 2 series CPUs. This includes discussion on R7 2700X power/current load across the phases. We'll soon be looking at the ASUS Crosshair VII Hero X470 motherboard vs. the Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7, but for now, we start here. The AMD R7 2700X isn't too different in basic design from the R7 1700, but it significantly changes low-end voltage requirements for sustaining 4.0GHz, something we discuss in our R7 2700X review (linked above).

I'm looking for a X470 board which is really power efficient for idle and undervolting for a 2700x and will last about 8-10 years. Is this a good choice? I had tons of issues between 2002-2004 with Gigabyte boards and never bought them anymore, because they had just BAD caps which would just blow up after 2-3 years and so I went for Asrock and they were better in ANY region than the Gigabyte, bios, support. I would buy a Asrock again but I read the VRMs get really hot on the X470 boards.

How bout addressing the WiFi issues this board has! It’s sad that it doesn’t even work and that I have to replace this board.

  • Mattias Larsson
Mattias Larsson 9 дней назад +1

Buildzoid was unsure of the hour rating of the caps, I think that they are the same caps that are used on the X399 Designare and Aorus boards, and the same caps that Gigabyte advertise on; - Long Lifespan Durable Black™ Solid Caps. If that is the case, the caps are rated for 10 000 hours.
If we compare the features of both boards, you have to scroll down on each page, there is a picture with blue markers / pointers where the caps are pointed to; X399 and X470 - Both mention Durable Black Solid Caps.
Finally, they look the same too,
Would be nice to get some kind of confirmation though.

@Buildzoid comparing your analysis if the Gigabyte X370 K7 and X470 K7, why would Gigabyte increase from 6 to 10 VCore and decrease from 4 to 2 SOC on the VRM?

  • Tcll5850
    Tcll5850 29 дней назад

it's better to have the VRM and not need it than need it and not have it
if you can only afford a 4-core and plan to upgrade to an 8-core, you have the head-room to do so.
but that's just me, I like having components that I don't need because *I may likely use them later*
this is why I want 7 PCIe x16 (x16-wired) slots instead of BS like onboard M.2 when I can get NVME or SATA through PCIe
(not to say onboard isn't good, as it means you can use another PCIe slot for something else)

well i love this board, it has a proper vrm cooling, which is great! it has power off button on the io, dual bios, which is great in a rare chance of corrupted bios or screwed up flashing of a bios.
strong vrm too, but why does it only have a wifi option? i don't wanna pay for poisoness wifi, which i will just plug out and never use.
also it's missing a ps/2 port, which is still important for keyboard enthusiasts for n-key rollover on boards etc.. but they decided to put an aorus logo on the io cover instead or sth? :/

Just to clarify: nothing bad (performance loss, component damage, etc.) happens if you decide to use a 6- or 4-core CPU with this board, it's just a little wasteful because the hardware won't be fully utilized?

Good review, as expected from Buildzoid. I am missing the clock generator as a key feature that the X370 version of the K7 sported. Neither Buildzoid nor the Gigabyte website mention any BCLK generator. Did they drop this option on the X470? I was considering to buy this board, now it looks like I'll have to go with the ASUS or the ASRock alternatives...

Hey BZ or anyone else who may know, I am considering an APU build- so are there any motherboards that have more than 2 phases for the SOC/IGPU? Considering my calculated CPU and IGPU power draws, 2 phases seem iffy when power draw is similar between the 2, and even likely skewed toward IPGU when overclocking.

I'm gonna buy a R3 1200 and a MSI B350 Gaming Pro Carbon but after seeing this video where the VRM is making a scary noiseвидео.html
I'm scared of buying this Mobo now as I will be upgrading to R7 2700 or R7 3700 when that comes out.
Should I try to spend an extra $40 to get the Asus Prime X370 Pro instead? As that has a 6+2 VRM. It looks worse and costs a lot more but if it's necessary I wouldn't mind it.
I'd be happy if someone could tell me what I should do.. Especially Buildzoid himself..
