Intel What Are You DOING!? Ice Lake Lineup Is A Huge Mess!

  • Published on Aug 4, 2019
  • Intel's Ice Lake 10th gen processors STILL aren't here but marketing is in full swing with some press allowed behind the scenes access to early performance results. But what REALLY matters right now is how this lineup seems designed to create customer confusion. Let's try and cut through the hype to explain what's going on here....

HardwareCanucks Given they just released the Comet Lake on the 14nm chip you got it exactly right. What I want to know given I am wanting to buy a new ultra light notebook, currently considering the Lenovo C940 Yoga 2in1 14 inch but waiting on the release of the 15inch model to compare, that comes with 10th Gen Ice Lake, I’m not sure whether I should wait longer especially as I gathered the internal graphics card will be worse for Comet and it won’t have the awesome thunderbolt ability to connect and be powered by multiple 4K monitors or perhaps 1 5K monitor which is something I really value. To add to this I plan on boosting the graphics while gaming by connecting up the Razer Core X External GPU enclosure. Frankly I’m a bit confused with all this as I haven’t used or even really looked into laptops in 2 decades.

@HardwareCanucks But will intel gen 11 gpu feature all the shaders and cache writing ot disk stuff in the drivers like amd and nvidia ? a major problem with some games is that the intel gpu like 520 and uhd 620 etc don't properly support shaders precache and stuff like shaders compute and some games like elite dangerous and no man's sky won't even start despite the gpu having enough processing power to run at 50-60 fps.

I use an ice lake core i5 processor and it works pretty well, and it has superior efficiency, compared to Ryzen CPU s, because it runs at only 45 W, So it gives you more battery life on notebooks.

Meanwhile, went on amazon and dropped $3,000 in upgrades to ditch Intel. I don't think Intel is even trying. Low power laptops are dumb, also they're not really profitable.

Dude what are you complaining about. I am only 14 yrs old. My parents were going to get a new family laptop so they told me to do some research for all the computers. In just like 3 months I have figured out intels branding scheme, what 10nm and 14nm mean, nvidia and amds lineup.

Maybe Intel had to lower clock speeds to increase the power budget for their improved GPU? That might be a good tradeoff, and their new iGPU looks promising (at least for games).

What do you expect each variation to be called then. I personally could care less how a processor is named. If anything it shows Intel is trying to govern consumers more options for what they want in their computer.

Intel is getting a lot of crap on this launch, but there are a lot of features this cpu has that will make laptops cheaper/smaller/useless power, which are the big things people are after, rather than raw CPU power. The decent integrated GPU means more laptops can ditch a discrete gpu. The integrated thunderbolt and wireless means more chips that can be left off the motherboard as well. All of this saves space/power/cost.

The i7s are not that confusing. The i7-1068G7 is probably for the 2020 MacBook Pro 13s or a mid-cycle refresh like what we got for the non-touchbar version this year. The i7-1065G7 is for all the other Windows ultrabooks (Dell XPS 13, Lenovo Yoga etc). The i3-1005G1 is just too shit to consider for a $1000 laptop but it is for the $700 range so it's okay. The i5 lineup is just messed up. I think they should have only one i5 CPU and that's the i5-1035G4 as the i5-1035 G1 is just an overclocked i3-1005G1 while the i5-1035G7 is an underclocked i7-1065G7. That will be the sweet spot as the i5-1035G1 is too close to the i3-1005G1 to consider an upgrade to the i5-1035G1 and the i5-1035G7 is too close to the i7-1065G7 to consider an upgrade to the i7-1065G7.

6:31 yep i was sure it was gonna be that way cause i remembered the U and Y code 😊
And btw I think this long weird new naming scheme is part of a tactic to make consumers differentiate less and perhaps buy a worse processor than they think.

I would guess that the majority mobile computer buyers don't care what the model number of the CPU is. They would care more about the performance specs of the whole device. This is something the OEM would care about. If you were buying or building a desktop you would probably be more concerned about the CPU model number.
