    So what happens when two Super Massive Black Holes collide? We may be about to find out, because astronomers have spotted a pair of them in a close binary orbit for the very first time.

    In this video, we discuss the reports about the detection of a pair of supermassive black holes orbiting only one light year apart from each other. Studying the dance of these giants should tell us a ton about how black holes grow. This paper was just published in Nature Astronomy by Preeti Kharb and Dharam Vir Lal from India’s National Center for Radio Astrophysics, and David Merritt from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

    So, about the final parsec problem. How do we know this is a problem at all? What if many of the supermassive black holes observed are actually TWO supermassive black holes, orbiting each other at a distance of ca. 1 parsec?
    This video explains about how one such pair HAS been resolved into its components, but how many supermassive black holes have been observed that carefully?
    Well, perhaps enough supermassive black holes HAVE been observed carefully enough, to get some reasonably good statistics. I simply don't know how much this has been researched.

    Doesn’t time appear to stop at the event horizon of a black hole? So wouldn’t we never see them merge since time appears to stop?

      Actually you cant see the black holes anyway you can only see the accretion disks merge

    What I love about science is that even being only a kid back in the 70's, it was obvious to me that Black holes had to be at the center of every galaxy, my 7th grade science teacher and I had many arguments over it. Yet scientists refused to speculate on that till they had the proof before admitting the obvious. It was this that made my respect for science so high.

    Obviously black holes are invisible but shouldnt we be able to see the super heated dust (heat=photons) whirling around the accretion disk, that dust hasnt crossed the event horizon so it should still be visible. So shouldnt we be able to view the accretion disk and use that to locate black holes.

    Isn't it possible that it could result in a uniquely massive hypernova? I just feel that something as massive and powerful as quasars should go out with a bigger bang (so to speak).
    Or at least the Quasar with a binary core of 2 SMBH's on collision course. The black holes merge sure, but what happens to the disc of explosives energy and matter surrounding it? Wouldn't Gravitational waves on this scale cause an explosion that makes a super nova look like a match lighting?

    July 2019, has this collision been witnessed yet? I get what you say about the merge. But would it be beyond reason to expect a somewhat vast explosion also?? All that energy and matter, enough to cause gamma burst, swirling around two SMBH's in a head on crash. Also wouldn't the black holes go a little mishapen, wobby causing accretion matter/energy, to get sucked in as well as blast outward.? I'd love to hear more about this metanova (new word coined! ©)...

    I'm wondering what happens to objects that fall in the "venn diagram" overlap of two black hole event horizons. The object would be in a region of space inside of two event horizons... It seems like a paradox situation, like which inescapable black hole does the object end up escaping from?

    Quasars are friction from particles falling into black holes, they would behave similar to objects near the event horizon. These black holes would waro the quasar and emese friction would appear. The black holes combine, 1 huge quasar with a trail..

    I guess this is a dumb question but if these binary super massive BH’s are located in a galaxy 400 million light years away, how can any radio telescope detect this? Radio only travels at light speed

    Why is it we say black holes have a gravity so strong that nothing escapes, but any time they are shown it looks like they have the complete opposite?

    So we never observed the real collide. How more powerful would it be than a supernova? How far should it be to cause a mass extintion? If powerful gravitational waves would hit us what would happen? The collision could cause some material to escape the event orizon? I dont know if this last question is stupid. But thats what happen in supernovas and big collisions after all. The energy relased is higher than gravity force and material is shooted in the space
