I moved to a rural part of Japan back in April. My town is pop 55,000 and I am one of a handful of foreigners.
As for people staring. I most definitely stare the most and sometimes even squeal "other foreigner!!!!" Lolol

As an American living in sunny Southern California, I am in love with both British and Japanese culture. Your show is now my favorite show on RUclip. You have inspired me to learn Japanese and move to Japan. I actually have an uncle there. If you could visit him in okanowa and feature him in your show and give him a hello for me, it would mean a lot to me. Also.. disregard my username. It was a video game name from "the good Old days"

Love the vids...autumn is the best and I love the sarcasm and love your friends too...Natsuki and Ryuotaro....sorry about spelling.....im Canadian French first (not quebec) then English then learning Japanese lol. #AskAbroad I've got a master's degree in teaching and was even in administration. Would I have to go still as a teaching assistant or could I be an actual teacher? I saw in 1 video that the jet program you went with a degree but was a support teacher. Just curious with a teaching degree and masters degree are the rules the same? Thanks

Honestly once you become conversationally fluent in a language it's pretty easy to learn the rest, as you now have a contextual baseline to use. That being said, languages that tend to have a word for every concept can take considerably longer to learn

I'm confused by your affirmation that the UK workplace communicates in a direct way :p ime, your "your lesson is rubbish" example would be expressed in a rather oblique way such as "hm... this is interesting..." or "oh, that's a great idea" or something along those lines... quite like you mention about Japan

I have only been in Japan two weeks and I ran into "Sorry, Japanese only" quite a few times. I also saw another variant that said "Only people who can speak Japanese", which I reckon supports Chris's explanation about some of them being nervous about communicating with foreigners. Other reasons I thought of may be that I sometimes was a bit drunk already or that I was doing a tour mostly of SE Asia and my attire would be seen as normal in the warmer countries but in Japan may not have been considered so classy, specifically singlets haha

That is what you should do, get places to agree to let you work for them and record and document the work you do for a week or two and then write or post a video of your experience. Like you might want to try being a bartender in Japan for a week or two, or being a Romain Chef. Or working in a busy store or a conveniences store, or working an advertising company. You could be the Token English guy, who makes sure you they get things like Drug Penguin and things like that. Or T-shirts that read I am naked and they have no clue what it means, you would think T-shirts with a saying on it in English would be followed by a translation even if small to explain what it says. Or place the translation on the back of the T-shirt or something, like the punch line or such. Heck that would be funny for your designs, you invert them so on the back it has the same thing but all the English is turned into Japanese and all the Japanese is turned into English. You could even inform them your doing it to place your experiences somewhere that young Japanese people can go and see and experience what the job was like for me and decide what they might wish to do in future. You could even try to get one of your friends to go along so it is also a strange adventure as a whole, but your taking or getting to responses to your activity more so if they had never had such jobs before would make it more interesting.

I try not to stare at Asians in Texas. I can't help it.
"Whoa! An Asian! Such a rare creature! I wonder if they eat food like we do?"
Its like happening upon a purple flower in a field of daisies. Your brain literally tells you to keep looking.

I've always been told Japan was insanely expensive, but in my opinion it's not. You always give the prices of everything and while a flight from the states could be pricey, Japan seems like a reasonable place to visit. Food, hotels and places to visit seemed very inexpensive compared to California and I live there. Lol. Hmmm...You changed my mind about Japan being monetarily unobtainable for a vacation.

    Hey I'm Tom
I studied abroad in Japan for a year. and I had to use japanese from day 1. almost NOONE spoke english where I lived. My host family was elderly and didn't speak much english either. So I just said "Fuck it" and spoke with everyone with my Broken and clumsyJapanese. One of the best desicions I made over there. because of that My japanese got better and better through each day. and after 3 months I spoke pretty much fluent Japanese with everyone, even tho I still spoke in short sentences and my scandinavian accent was still present. after about 8 months My Japanese was so fluent that people thought I was a Half or something.
One day walking home from club activities with my friends
they suddenly said to me "トムって違和感ないよね" ( That my Japanese doesn't have a wierd of restrained feeling)
and I was like "YEEEEESSSSHHHHH FINNALLY!!!"
I almost never used english In japan, except with the two english teachers at my school or Matsumoto-sensei who was the first teacher I met from the school
