After some confusion, Dubinsky scores Blue Jackets' second penalty shot of game

  • Опубликовано: 19 мар 2017
  • Blue Jackets forward Josh Anderson was taken down on a breakaway, was awarded Columbus' second penalty shot of the game, but was hurt on the play. Sam Gagner was going to take it but wasn't on the ice! Finally, Brandon Dubinsky takes it and scores.

Isn't it the captain that has to designate the shooter in that situation? I know it's not that big of a deal but it would have been interesting to see haha

It's funny how after Brandon Dubinsky took the penalty shot, Anderson was all smiles and didn't even to the dressing room for a checkup. I can definitely understand why the devils coach was frustrated, bad act by the Blue Jackets

  • Chris J

Not a clear breakaway, shouldn't have been a PS. The acting was really bad on this one. Leave it to tortorella to pull some skeet stuff like this. Just a shame to see this in the NHL but it seems that organization is going downhill fast.

It seems kinda dirty but I'd say its just good thinking. Get a guy that might be better at penalty shots to take it.

Probably unpopular opinion here. But it's in the rules for someone else on the ice to take a penalty shot if someone is hurt. Thing is you know the rules and you can use them to your advantage. Jut like the NFL if you touch the ball with your feet out of bounce on the kickoff then it's like the ball went out of bounce. Moral of the story is know the rules inside and out and you can take advantage of them.

This shouldnt be a thing, Slow getting up, sit on the bench, be told you cant be on the bench, and just stand in the tunnel and walk to the bench once the goal is scored. If he was working on his leg, or the trainor was working with him on it, i would understand it, But this is some bullshit to the max..

personally I think all hockey players are competitors and anyone on that bench would love to be in the position to take the penalty shot. Anderson was likely being held out by the coaches and or training staff.

Does Anderson have anxiety or something? Why wouldn't he just take the shot, he obviously wasn't injured

    • Michael Carson
      Michael Carson 8 месяцев назад

He was absolutely eligible, the injured player rule only applies in situations where play is stopped for the injured player and there is an exception for penalty shots. He had a plenty of time to skate this off as the play was reviewed by Toronto.
      From the NHL rulebook:
24.3 Designated Player – In cases where a penalty shot has been
awarded to a player specifically fouled, that player shall be designated
by the Referee to take the penalty shot.
If by reason of injury, the player designated by the Referee to take
the penalty shot is unable to do so within a reasonable time, the shot
may be taken by a player selected by the Captain of the non-offending
team from the players on the ice when the foul was committed. Such
selection shall be reported to the Referee and cannot be changed.

Michael Carson he was told pulled off the ice by the trainer he has to wait for the next whistle so he was not eligible to take the shot

    • Michael Carson
Michael Carson 8 месяцев назад +1

The reality is that is the rule as stated in the NHLs rulebook. I've been a ref for hockey for 14 years and nils4545 is just wrong. In a more broad context, an injured player can rejoin the game immediately as long as the whistle wasn't blown specifically for him. If the play is stopped specifically for him, he doesn't have to sit out a shift (however long that is) but just has to wait for the puck to be dropped. Finally the rules clearly state that a player who was injured and awarded a penalty shot should do so if he can in a reasonable time. This play was reviewed by Toronto so Anderson had plenty of time to skate things off if he was a little shaken up, but based on his smirk and the reaction on the bench and trainers after a goal was scored he clearly could and should have taken the shot. The point of a penalty shot isn't to get your best shooter a chance, it's to return an equal scoring opportunity. I think the refs failed to catch this, but it is still very classless of Anderson and the Columbus team to do this and by the rules he should have taken the shot.

Michael you are clearly just too dumb for reality.

    • Michael Carson
      Michael Carson 8 месяцев назад

      False nils4545.
"If by reason of injury, the player designated by the Referee to take
the penalty shot is unable to do so within a reasonable time, the shot
may be taken by a player selected by the Captain of the non-offending
team from the players on the ice when the foul was committed. Such
selection shall be reported to the Referee and cannot be changed."
An injured player is allowed to take the shot, and he should have in this case. He clearly wasn't so injured he couldn't take the shot.

  • RyanClarky

Thats so stupid. Anderson ahould have been the one to shoot the penalty shot. how after Dubinsky scores he has a smile on his face. and he played the rest of the game. if there was so much confusion they should have just called it a penalty. that should have not of even been a penalty shot anyway. i lost all respect for Columbus i hope they dont go far in the playoffs. i would also love to. torts mad i hate that guy

He was injured on the play, by rule he has to sit for at least one shift. This includes a penalty shot. Andy would've taken the shot if he could have. He's not one to blow opportunities.

I know what the rule is, and the reason would be so a 'better' should could take the shot. Better should would result in a better chance at getting a goal.

That's really dirty and classless for Anderson to pretend to be hurt so someone else takes the penalty shot. If you're hurt then leave the game but don't hide until the shot was taken so you can go sit on the bench again.

That was barely even a breakaway. Guys have been on breakaways where the guy is ten feet behind him from the red line and have been hooked, slashed, tripped. None have been awarded penalty shots. This should have just been two minutes.

+The rêãł Dave Smith īš ñöt fäké I know, I am just saying this play never gets awarded a penalty shot, it's always a 2 minute minor so players almost always just take the penalty instead of letting them get a shot off.

+Noah Roller I have been watching the Ducks every game this season and they get taken down like this almost every game (the same can probably be said for every team) and haven't been awarded a penalty shot once this season. Seems to be a different standard used here, this play is almost always just a 2 minute minor, and it's an easy penalty to take, so players do it often.
