Ray Chapman, shortstop for the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball, hit in the head by a pitch from Carl Mays of the NY Yankees on August 17, 1920. Chapman died 12 hours later at the age of 29, the only fatality ever from injuries suffered during a Major League Baseball game. His death led to the banning of the spitball and was cited 30 years later as a reason for the adoption of a rule mandating the use of the batting helmet.

Unlisted. 1. Ray Chapman. He is the only baseball player killed by a pitch. This event led to the batting helmet. 2. Kim Duk Koo. His death was on US TV when Duk fought Ray Mancini. More tragic than what Mojo listed: Duk predicted his death. RIP to all listed.
