I recall the truly awful scenes of poor David Purley trying to save his burning friend who'd crashed moments earlier at the 1973 Vervoort racing circuit. His frantic demands for aid while he made superhuman attempts to fight through the inferno that engulfed his dead friend. A sadder & forlorn figure you've never seen in your life again. You can't watch the footage & not bubble your eyes out, its a monumental disaster of a human tragedy.

As far as Dale E. Death, he started it by not wearing a HANS device, broke neck, he didn’t like tight seat harnesses, his was loose, busted head and face. And most of all, he invented his bump and run style, and they, all the nascar drivers, got tired of it being his late, I can’t pass cleanly, unsportsmanlike conduct. So when he was blocking others in the field, he paid the price. His fault, their fault, no ones fault, then the price was paid. Sad but life decisions will catch up sooner or later.

Senna, Earnhardt, Owen Hart, Bianchi, and Gathers were most notable for me, but 1955 Le Mans disaster led to Mercedes not being a factory team for more than half of a century, only to re-emerge as Mercedes AMG Petronas. Senna's death, ironically, paved the way for the series of safety evolutions that we are witnessing, as dull as it may, at least we only have Bianchi's death in the years since Senna. IndyCar, on the other hand, STILL being willfully ignorant towards the safety at the ovals, and that's why oval circuits are better suited for NASCAR or SportsCar

  • Kieran O'lafferty
    Kieran O'lafferty Месяц назад

This is what I hate about the way safety in sports is implemented, we put up barriers and use the right kit AFTER someone's died.....that shouldnt be allowed to happen, things like shock absorbing barriers in nascar and f1 shouldve been standard from the start, not after people died

Sorry, but Owen Hart doesn't belong on this list because-
#1: He died as a result of a stunt, not an actual sporting event.
#2: "Professional" wrestling is not a sport.
No, I'm not going to say "the F word." I'm going to say that "professional" wrestlers are more stuntmen than athletes, it would be far more accurate to have put Hart on the list of stunts gone horribly wrong.

Ray Chapman, shortstop for the Cleveland Indians of Major League Baseball, hit in the head by a pitch from Carl Mays of the NY Yankees on August 17, 1920. Chapman died 12 hours later at the age of 29, the only fatality ever from injuries suffered during a Major League Baseball game. His death led to the banning of the spitball and was cited 30 years later as a reason for the adoption of a rule mandating the use of the batting helmet.
