The Drug Trial That Went Wrong: Emergency At The Hospital (Medical Documentary) - Real Stories

  • Опубликовано: 11 апр 2018
  • On Monday 13 March 2006, eight healthy young men took part in a clinical trial of an experimental drug known as TGN1412. The drug was intended to treat leukaemia and had already been successfully tested on monkeys but never on humans.
It should have been a routine clinical trial but it soon spiraled into one of the most infamous medical emergencies in recent British history.

The only tragedy that could've happened from this event was if we never learned the lesson. This was the event that propelled a new systemic drug interaction which was potentially fatal into the knowledge of the medical and drug development community. It is because of this study that cytokine storm is recognized and treated with the urgency it deserves. I know I can't possibly empathize with the participants, but I will forever respect their participation in something no one should ever experience, so the rest of us don't have to.

Why would anyone willingly agree to have a strange substance tested on them? I would never ever agree to that. No way. There is always a risk. You don´t know what effects the new drug will have. Neither do the doctors, obviously. People who volunteer to play test dummies are either crazy or... I don´t know...

    • Dana Patricia Mary

I see your point. And I know these people thought they would contribute to the advancement of science. And they got paid for that, too (I think for some of them, it was the most important reason to undergo this experiment). For me, it still is crazy as you risk your own health and your own life. You have only one health and one life. And if you are married and have a family, you are also responsible for them. So undergoing this kind of an experiment needs to be driven by either craziness or by a lack of money. I believe that only one out of 20, 50 volunteers do it for the sheer advancement of science. I am down to earth, you see. But that is my realistic opinion. I respect yours. It is ok and you may be right. My opinion stems from experience. I live near a blood donor center and I see loads of the poorest of the poor people, often homeless and gypsies who enter and then leave this center. They donate their blood and their blood plasma and receive money for that. Many of them are unemployed and living on the streets or in shelters, so they earn money in this way. It is the very same thing.

    • KM Mab
      KM Mab 4 дня назад

Dana Patricia Mary Simple: A willingness to contribute to the advancement of science no matter the cost. There is nothing wrong with that. To say that the subjects are crazy is a bit much. Your life may last another several years due to a drug that was advanced to the shelves from the tests these subjects contributed to.

Too bad there isn't an advanced modeling program to virtually test potential treatments before there is an actual real world test.

they continued to give the drugs even though the first patient had huge problems. that was unethical and certainly a situation, where this test had to be stopped. So, in my consideration, the doctor who started this was responsible for the damage. and he as well as the two collegues who passed by reacted way too late on the situation! the patients had to be transfered to an intensive care many hours earlier. my opinion as a collegue .

Wouldn't it be more scientific to separate these men into separate rooms? The fact they could watch as others got sick could induce a sort of negative placebo effect in the others. (Not saying that's what happened in this case, but just speaking in general terms).

    • Olleke Morgan
      Olleke Morgan 4 дня назад

+thatgirlfromwindsor i think what he meant was that after the two placebo patients had been sent home and everyone who remained was on the drug, they should have separated patients to ensure that no placebo symptoms were felt. for example, if everyone at a gathering ate some soup, and the soup proved to give people food poisoning, someone who had already eaten the soup might feel false symptoms due to the paranoia that they will be sick as well.

    • thatgirlfromwindsor
      thatgirlfromwindsor 6 дней назад

The study that was conducted is called a double blind study. Neither the doctors injecting the drug nor the patients know whether they are getting the placebo or the drug. This, theoretically, minimizes the risk of patient's experiencing the placebo effect. This also prevents the doctors/nurses from treating the patients any differently or influencing the results in any way. In clinical trials, the drug tested must be proven to have not just as good results as those with the placebo, but better. Separating the men would just make the whole point of the double blind null.
