On Monday 13 March 2006, eight healthy young men took part in a clinical trial of an experimental drug known as TGN1412. The drug was intended to treat leukaemia and had already been successfully tested on monkeys but never on humans.
It should have been a routine clinical trial but it soon spiraled into one of the most infamous medical emergencies in recent British history.

This should be a movie. My heart breaks for all patients & medical team that was involved. No doubt, the horrific sights, sounds and agony they experienced will never be forgotten. I would love to see another follow up 5 or 10 years later. Very well done, great video!

To make a vacine for cancer you need to put cancer within the medicine and doing this for men that don't have cancer and youve mixed cancer with another drug which attacks the imune system that is very dangerous thats basicly turning all of them into a human toxin

honestly i think, even though i hate pharmacuticals. would it not of made more sense to try it on ones who actually had leucemia rather that one ones who didnt.

If it’s supposed to be a treatment for leukaemia, why test it on healthy people? Wouldn’t they have different body temperatures and/or functions, which would eventually lead to different reactions/results?

what i don't get is why they kept giving it to the others after seeing what it was doing to the first guy.. than they said when they gave it to the monkeys they gave it to em a little at a time. why did they give it to them all at once not knowing the side effects. if they would have given it to the people in different ways they would have had different effects and it might not had been so much for each man.. just my opinion..

For those of you making fun of the doctor for asking if they're okay, it's actually a very good practice. First of all, he's making sure they're still responsive. Second of all, he's trying to keep them calm. If you saw someone crack their skull open, you wouldn't start shouting "OMG ARE YOU OKAY!? OH MY GOD HE'S GONNA DIE THAT'S A LOT OF BLOOD" no, you'd say "It's going to be okay, you'll be fine."
    Just so you know

Never forget to FOLLOW THE MONEY! This trial was rushed ahead as fast as possible without enough research to turn a profit, and the MHRA was probably paid off by paraxel to find no evidence of wrongdoing.
Whatever the out of court settlement was for these poor guys, it certainly wasn't enough to cover the costs of the inevitable future cancers, etc., which the company involved will certainly deny responsibility for.
Those greedy fucks and that corrupt MHRA guy they interviewed ought to be in jail!

This case and the situation with thalidomide has, on the silver lining, served as a warning that this is dangerous, very dangerous, and every single precaution must be taken.
I'm no expert but hearing and reading how everything was administered, the timing of each dose just didn't sound right. Maybe someone could enlighten me on the subject but it makes me nervous that a large part of medicine is run by people who are making money off it.

I was in London in 2006 and my boyfriend I was living with at the time applied to be on this exact trial. My sister is a scientist and warned against the negative impact it could have on his body long term like his liver function etc.... possible higher susceptibility to cancers etc. I remember discussing together if he should do it or not and reading that it had only been tested on monkeys was not reassuring at all! I really felt nervous for him and said that I wasn't sure. But he was doing it solely for the money... because a friend of his had told him about the medical trials and how much money you get paid. People are not warned at all of the possible long term dangers also. Its mostly people who need money that do these kinds of trials..... Anyway luckily after going through the application and testing he was not chosen. I'll never forget seeing it on the news and thinking... OMG that could have been him. I don't think any amount of money is worth jeopardising your health. But... I suppose there's always people out there you can manipulate with the promise of money.

  • NC redbird

Hate these men suffered so badly but hard to feel sorry for a person that willingly signs up to do a medical trial. You do so knowing the outcome could be bad, very bad. I know testing is the only way to know if a medicine will work but going into the unkown with your body is stupid. Life is dangerous as is without adding those chances, taking medicine that has never been tested on humans. Animal testing is horrible. Not sure what the answer to this issue is but I just wish there was another way without causing pain and agony on human or animal. Animals feel pain, I just don't feel animals were meant to be test subjects for a human or animal. No way to know what the continued effects will be.

Im 33 mins in where the wife comes in and is scared by his appearance. I visited a friend after they broke their back and almost died. It truly is a shocking fear, It was hard for me to get close to her or even see her as herself. She could only write, no verbal ability. She had to write on a piece of paper "don't be scared Steven it's just me". It's hard to describe all the layers to this feeling. This is my best friend's sister that I've had a crush on since I met her and we were all so close. To be scared of her as nothing was recognizable about her just had me in the most confused and shocked state.

Prisoners are given experimental drugs, I was given an injection in the guise it was against hep B, in 2010 , two days later I got migraines non stop for two years, five years layer I am racked with pain, swelling joints fingers toes knees neck back legs, in fact my whole body feels like its bruised and doctors can't find a cause, they have tried different steroids but its just getting worse, I have been in total agony now for over 7 weeks non stop 24/7 Wakefield prison UK administered the first poison, some people will say they should use experimental drugs on prisoners, I think it will be used on people who are not an asset in society so they will try to get rid of the dead wood by giving them slow acting poisons , I hope they get theirs
