  • On Monday 13 March 2006, eight healthy young men took part in a clinical trial of an experimental drug known as TGN1412. The drug was intended to treat leukaemia and had already been successfully tested on monkeys but never on humans.
It should have been a routine clinical trial but it soon spiraled into one of the most infamous medical emergencies in recent British history.

So they do a trial on human beings and you do it 10x faster in terms of the procedure and administering the drug in the system way quicker then that of the trial on the monkeys....trials are done over a period of days not in one setting....they were careless PERIOD!!!!

I hate to be that guy. But something like this "experimental" test. You know they had to sign a written contract that risk are involved. They knew the risk and took it anyway for financial compensation. They got no one to blame but themselves. They make new medicine everyday. Their experimental failure will aid future research.

This hit too close to home. I'd done 2 drug trials before, and I was very careful; both times were on medication that was already used in humans for years. (One was just a new delivery system, in a nasal spray, and the other was for a different dose I think?) Both of those went well, and the money was great ($8000 for one of them). So then I relaxed my standards a bit and signed up for that had only been used in humans once before I think. It was also an infusion iv one. I was the only person that had a negative reaction, and it was really scary. When the guy talked about seeing this totally unknown liquid going into your arm, that gave me shivers. But yeah, I remember that when it hit me, I couldn't speak or react, I started sweating profusely but was freezing cold (my feet never sweat, and they were drenched) and apparently I was staring blankly for 15minutes, but to me I could have sworn it was 1 minute. All these doctors rushed over and I just remember my vision got weird, it was like the room just flipped upside down. but not really... just like, everything was suddenly not where it was supposed to be. Like if your head suddenly snapped all the way back. And this happened a few times, the room just..flipping.
Luckily it slowly started to wear off and I returned to normal, but it was terrifying. The other patients told me they were terrified too (there were barriers between us but we were all in the same room. I knew some of them, and they said I just went silent and they heard the drs calling my name over and over. They thought I was dying or something). The worst part was I remember the drs were more just...observing me. Like they were checking to see if I was ok, but also standing around and making notes and checking the time (cuz it's important to write down exactly when things happen in studies). I felt very much like an animal that was being observed for their gain, not like a human in a medical possible-emergency.
That was the last one I ever did, and ever will do. I still worry about that sometimes, like when i think of having kids, will it affect them, whatever this substance was? Or will I develop some sort of cancer later or something? Not worth it in my opinion, never again.

The people signed up fully knowing that it's the first human trials. They knew there were risks and accepted the terms. Blame is thrown on everybody!
Where is the volunteers responsibility for their own actions part?
You took the risk and gambled & it back fired! Sorry for what you & your families went through but YOU must take & accept responsibility as well.

52:56 and they actually confirmed the exact opposite of what most of you say here...the point was that the,, docking station" on the monkeys for this drug is different in that it needs a,, catalyst" to react in this way. Humans have this,, catalyst" on the docking station which wasn't known...so you could have given the monkey 1000 times the dosage and they wouldn't have gotten problems BUT you could have given a human 10 THOUSAND times less and still it would have been the same reaction......nobody could have predicted it happening 50:45 Look it up...this is the independent guy from the court trial.

  • Fab Elger
    Fab Elger 9 дней назад

They DID NOT administer MORE in LESS time! DO THE MATH! It was 500 times less than what they gave the monkeys...if you take 500 grains of salt in 5 ml of water the dosage is 100 per 1 ml. the humans got 1 grain of salt in the WHOLE 5 ml. No matter HOW QUICK you administer those 5ml...the dosage nor the amount of grain salt per time x can be higher than what the monkeys got IN ANY WAY. They DID not administer more nor quicker.

  • Fab Elger

Bet you would never do this again! Most patients who have spent any length of time in a hospital are also aware that multiple mistakes on every ward in every hospital are made each week (probably meaning millions a week) and many people become sick from them. While apologies are be made, these appear to be almost never documented. Many patients also don't receive medicines on time and sometimes not at all due to staff shortages. Personally I knew of 2 patients who ecen died because of hospital errors only. A hospital is the most dangerous place people can end up in, period, and should be avoided as much as possible if a patient isn't already on his death bed!
