Why Masters Of The Universe Will Blow You Away

He-Man's first foray into theaters in 1987 didn't exactly go as planned, but the once-mighty TV and toy phenomenon is finally poised to get the reboot treatment. Even though the first movie was a flop, the new Masters of the Universe is far more likely to blow you away. Here's why.
To say that the 1987 film Masters of the Universe was a bit of a disappointment would be a massive understatement. The movie starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, Frank Langella as the villainous Skeletor, and a young Courteney Cox as a newly introduced Earthling character named Julia Winston. Cox's character, in a way, embodied many fans' major problems with the film. There wasn't anything wrong with the future Friends star's performance, per se, but her having such a key role in the film left fans hugely frustrated - for two reasons.
First, Julia is from Earth - which is also where most of the film takes place. By contrast, the cartoon and comics were based on the planet Eternia, a fantastical land that combined elements of sword and sorcery with science fiction. By taking He-Man out of that familiar setting and transporting him to Earth, the movie was forced to tell a fish-out-of-water story that prevented fans from getting to experience He-Man in his element. Secondly, Julia Winston never appeared in the cartoon, the comics, or the toy line. She was a character created solely for the film, and she wasn't the only one. Despite having dozens of well-liked and fascinating characters at their disposal, the filmmakers chose to forego them all in favor of their own like keyboard-playing Kevin.
The creative team behind the new Masters of the Universe surely know just what went wrong with the original, and there's no way they're going to repeat the mistakes of the past. Sorry, Kevin.
It may be 2019, but these days you'd be forgiven for thinking it was actually 1989. Everywhere you look in pop culture, the decade of big hair, neon clothing, and Reaganomics seems to be taking over. Just look at what's on TV these days: Modern reboots of classic '80s series MacGyver and Magnum P.I. are both important blocks of CBS' primetime lineup, while ABC's comedy lineup is partly anchored by the '80s-set The Goldbergs and The Conners, a continuation of '80s hit Roseanne. On top of all that, Netflix has a Voltron reboot, the Full House follow-up Fuller House, '80s wrestling drama GLOW, and, of course, the massively popular Stranger Things, which even got Coca-Cola to bring back New Coke - one of the biggest product failures of all time - as a tie-in. Netflix also produces She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, a reboot of He-Man's female-focused spinoff series, which debuted in 1985. Keep watching the video to see why Masters of the Universe will blow you away!

Who's your favorite Masters of the Universe character?

  • Julius Vercruysse

hordak and not the 80's stupid she-ra version, I like the 2002 version of hordak and he was the original OG before skeletor I had hordak toy as a kid I had the first hordak toy and I had buzzsaw hordak. tell she-ra the masters of the universe called and they want there character back. Hordak has no business showing up in the she-ra cartoon. this is why the motu franchise and filmation cartoons went of business because they didn't know how to market there product when I was a kid I to watch a girls cartoon just to watch my favorite motu bad guy who was hordak and the evil horde which they made hordak out be a corny ass villain when in the comics that came with character he was much more powerful then what filmation made him out to be I was furious. in the 2002 version of motu he was badass and the way he should have been and was suppose to be set free but they cancelled the cartoon before hordak had his time to shine I loved the 2002 version of the motu and the hell with everybody who shitted on it, i was a kid when motu came out in the 80's now that I'm grown up I think motu needs to grow up to and stop trying to please little kids cuz they don't get it and they don't appreciate it the way my generation does, I think motu should be geared towards the adult crowad. and the new movie should be pg13 and hordak should be the main villain.

I love the original Masters of the Universe movie, it wasn't perfect, but still good. If only Dolph could speak clearly, you can barely understand him.

I think I was the 1st person saying that Thor the dark world was the best MOTU movie ever made then they made Ragnarok..almost as though someone was listening to me and seeing what they actually had there. Now use that as a framework to bring MOTU to life as it always should have been. My only fear here is sony can they stay true to the original and mature it where it needs to be so that it doesn't feel like a childrens cartoon?

  • Dangerous Devil Official

The newly cast He Man is terrible... Chris Pratt isn’t much of an action star as you said either. Everything in his action movies is CG.
The real action stars are those of the 80’s who actually did their own real stunts. With real explosions.
BTW, I am many minutes deep into your video and I still don’t see the point of your title. There has been nothing listed to back your statement.

  • Dangerous Devil Official

I don’t care what anyone says, the 80’s movie was good! The reboots of most of these old movies suck major ass.

I think from 1978 to 1998 is one of the best eras of our time and the 80s being the most influential, we still use music and fashion and elements of those times to our pop culture today even tho ever Era of time in America has influence to our society in the states but 8 believe from the eras 1978to1998 and everything in between has the biggest impact

It's called low budget . He - Man In Eternia would have been like at least a 💯 Million dollar budgeted movie mostly in high price writers, actors , Music score , locations , and Special effects in the Star Wars or Thor league in 1987 which would have been way over budget lol . Making the movie on Earth with some known , unknown actors made more sense money wise , and personel availability in 1987 .
Now if He - Man could be made on a John Carter , Aquaman , X-Men ,Thor , or Superman level these days on a Blockbuster budget and supreme CGI capabilities it would be well worth making .Getting the right buffed out dude to play He - Man is the main challenge tho . I mean I can only see Kellan Lutz or Chris Hemsworth playing He - Man physically anyway and at least have some acting abilities . Or maybe Dolph Lundgen has a son we don't know about hahaha .

The character of He-Man was supposedly only 20 years old at the start of the original series, and though he was a little younger in the 200X reboot he was also slimmer and slighter of physique with more lean muscle...

The reason why Thanos looked so realistic is because of the motion capture. It had a physical base to paint the cgi over. Pure cgi items lack substance and weight and it shows. The best results are achieved by using practical effects in the shoot and apply cgi in post-processing.
