The conductor does not lead the orchestra at all.
Stands for picture. The picture is also not very good. Where did he go to school?

The coolest part of this piece was when the conductor points at the pianist at 1:07

This cameraman is ridiculous, zooms in on everyone besides the saxophone at all of the sax solo measures or even when theyre at the forefront of the music. Its actually infuriating.

Personally would've prefered more grime amd growl in the saxophone solos and brass at the beginning, but as for the rest of the piece, sounds better than the original studio recordings :)

Amazing performance! What a wonderful band! I'm a brazilian military musician, and this band is a reference to me. But the video edition could be better! The cameras could show the soloists at the right moment the solos begin. Greetings from Brazil!

@The Ratman hmm a mute called a plunger mute, often made of a plunger

    • Patrick Flanagan
      Patrick Flanagan 10 months ago

Can I Get 10,000 subs with no public videos?: funny because I own 3 different mutes and none of them make that sound, that’s an actual thing used in jazz. Not as much now but back then

@Patrick Flanagan its a mute... Not a plunger

Real question: is the middle trumpet player the one playing the super super high stuff and then saving his chops through the rest of the piece?

Hi! Yes, I do rest some on this piece, but it’s mostly on the things that are already doubled. We’ve got 6 players in the section and I use an assistant on this piece. This was just one tune in a whole concert, so I have to pace myself!

    • Philippe Kinnaer

Actually it looks like there is a lead trumpet part in the arrangement

    • Russell Zollinger
      Russell Zollinger Year ago +14

It’s pretty common in Jazz to have the soloist have the (otherwise) easiest part. Let’s the player really push the solo knowing the section has the rest of the piece.

It would sound better and be easier to feel the beat if the conductor didn’t try to subdivide the beat! I would have gone with a cut-down small jazz group from within the ensemble. 😳🙄 Get out of the box, Sir! You’re working so hard it makes the entire piece awkward. Not to mention the bass player got lost, twice!

    • Patrick Flanagan

Guy with a Sandwich and the trumpet clam and late note at 1:33ish. The entire arrangement sounds terribly under rehearsed, or as stated earlier, the director got in the way.
