The Ending Of Us Explained

  • Jordan Peele's Get Out had a lot to say, but Us is arguably twice as ambitious, doubling down on both the horror and the social commentary. But if you didn't quite catch what the movie was going for, then it might also be a frustrating watch. There's a lot going on beneath the surface of this movie - and we mean that literally.
The premise of Us revolves around sinister, slasher-movie doppelgangers, who show up out of nowhere with apparently murderous motives. It supposedly focuses on one family, the Wilsons, being attacked in a home invasion by brutal copies of themselves. But the third act reveals that it's not just the Wilsons having this strange experience - it's the entire United States of America, with an unfathomably huge army of doubles being led by a woman named Red, the shadow version of Lupita Nyong'o's Adelaide.
That's the first twist the movie throws at you. But the second big twist, teased out slowly, is that the Addie the audience has been following the whole movie isn't the original Adelaide - it's her double, who switched places with her at a young age during the movie's opening flashback scene.
    Post-traumatic
Grown-up Addie is haunted by an experience from her youth, when she wandered into a boardwalk funhouse and saw a sinister vision of herself. But the movie leaves out crucial information of what happened during that encounter, apparently reflecting the fact that Addie herself has suppressed what happened. As she recalls, she wandered into the attraction, found herself, and then shortly returned to her panicking parents. But as the final frames of the movie reveal, a whole lot of consequential stuff happened during that brief period - like the fact that the original Addie never came back.
In the movie's final moments, Addie realizes - or perhaps just finally admits to herself - that she is the double from the underground, who strangled the original Addie and took her place, leaving the original Addie shackled down below to begin a new life as Red.
One big clue that this is what happened is that Red is the only one of the doubles that can talk. Everyone else only emits inhuman grunts and moans, with Red speaking in a raspy, damaged voice. Turns out, this comes from the damage her double did to her throat when she strangled her. When the double entered the real world, she still didn't know how to speak, leaving her parents baffled at their daughter's sudden, apparently trauma-induced muteness.
Keep watching the video for the rest of the ending of Us explained!

No one's commenting about the one black rabbit. I think that one black rabbit and the toy white rabbit was the symbolic link to the Red / Adelaide anomaly indicating the success of the top secret government experiment although the storyline was more of a yin and yang allegory. When Adelaide found her son Jason holding the rabbit, that represented him embracing his connection to Pluto. And Jason realized that he was of mixed heredity; and that's the reasons why he was different from everyone else. And he embraced it, too, when he covered his face with his werewolf mask. He was the fake masked wolf boy with an inner darkness and Pluto was the real werewolf boy wearing a Casper the friendly ghost mask with a love of light.

I was thinking about how in the trailer for this movie u can see adelaine’s doppelgänger choking adelaine, and I was waiting for that to be shown for the whole movie and was a little confused up until the end. But toward the middle of the movie adelaine states that she ran away when she saw the doppelgänger. That was a dead giveaway that adelaide was the doppelgänger all along.

Okay, most of the people that were in my movie theater were confused at the end. So was I. I didn’t get the part on HOW the son figured out that the good girl (in the beginning) was switched out with the bad one. I don’t really get how he figured it out. I was really confused also because now I’m thinking what if the bad doppelgänger is going to kill her family? (Which I doubt) the ending was really confusing for me. So all along the bad doppelgänger turned good and had a family, right. So then, the good one turned bad. So then she created the whole thing and wanted to kill her doppelgänger because of switching her out? But I remember that in the movie it said that they just take stuff for granted. I mean the movie was amazing it was incredible... but I think that the movie has a deeper meaning... I don’t know I feel like people are going to start conspiracies with this movie.

Does the ending of the movie really matter? We aren’t scared of the tethered because they’re dopplegangers we’re scared because they’re murderers. We aren’t rooting for the main character because she was a surface born human, we’re rooting for her because she’s a mother protecting her family. The ending doesn’t change this, and doesn’t add anything to the story. The ending is simply a twist for the sake of having a twist.

Why didn't she just come up as soon as she was free (coz she's still a child she would've been scared to stay there right not knowing y these people are twitching and smiling)..... Second is wat was the purpose of the tethered Adelaine who has been living in the surface world all these years..... Why didn't she help her people (tethered) and why was she so into living as a human after all the years of torture as tethered.....!!!! Please make a sequel.....

If the tethered are the ones who are following the actions of the humans above then wouldn’t Red continue to still be imitating the actions of the real Adeline even after they switched out? Like if the real Adeline was below ground preparing for the rebellion then isn’t that what Red would have been doing above ground because it’s the thethered that are controlled by the real ppl?. It doesn’t matter if the tethered are below or above ground? Does that question make sense? I’m so confused 😂

Some themes I picked up on in this film are selfishness, and how we learn. The use of masks was awesome, because masks serve as a way to hide. Also, this movie does touch on class, and what really makes us happy. The Wilson's had enough, but Gabe wanted what their friends had. As for selfishness...we are naturally selfish, and have to be taught selflessness. Evil Adelaide was selfish to trick Real Adelaide, and stole her life. She was also selfish in the sense that she did not free the other clones. She just went up herself. Real Adelaide showed selflessness in remaining with the clones and teaching them to revolt. Becuase Real Adelaide was human, she could feel, unlike the other clones...so her suffering was something that really should have killed her, but it made her stronger. Evil Adelaide also represents "trying to fit in". She had to learn how to be human, and over time, she learned what love, fear, and rage was. That was why she was so afraid of Real Adelaide, she knew she would come back and try to reclaim her life. Another theme is "Us" trying to mimic what we see wealthier people do, because the wealthy seem happier. But if you notice, the wealthy family in the movie had all these things, but were very unhappy and alcoholics. And their "things" were unrealiable and could not save them (hence when Kitty asked ophelia to call the police, it played F*** the Police instead). Also, the tethered not having a voice represents the poor and how they are not heard. Poverty is still an issue in America, and it's almost like the poverty stricken cannot speak for themselves. Also, this film makes you question who you are in society. Evil Adelaide was living to blend in with everyone else, and harbored her real identity. She "became" someone else. Real Adelaide was a fighter, and a leader. She suffered, and in that, became strong. As for why the clones were there in the first place, obviously they were products of an experiment to control the population. When the government saw they could not "clone the soul" they left the experiments to mindlessly be controlled by their counterparts (the normal people above ground). The rabbits served as food, as Real Adelaide pointed out in her story, but the rabbits also served as pet of the cloning experiment. Think about it, rabbit DNA would be useful in a cloning experiment since rabbits can reproduce at a fast rate. As for how the government would have access to DNA of others in order to clone them, well that's not hard either. Lol. Our DNA is everywhere: in hospitals, in systems in order for us to get jobs (hence drug testing)...everywhere. Also, we all have a number (SSN) that we are filed by.
I hope Peele makes a sequel to this and goes broader, to show what happens later. The helicopters at the end were obviously there to kill the tethered and break up the line but still...I wanna know how this goes down. Lol.

*Im going to call Red the protagonist and Adele the red suit one*
How did Red plan the event before it happened? In the psych office she aligned the dinosaurs in a form line but Ade was the one who planned it all. Also how did Adele know how to dance the ballet if shes not the tethered one Red is, isnt the tethered supposed to mimic the original not the other way around? Also it has a lot of plot holes, this is more of a Twilight Zone type movie and not a what if message type of movie
    7/10 honestly

I think Red sent her son out there because he is unique from the other Tethereds, not like his sister. Just in case Red fails on killing her Tethered that took her place in life, her son Pluto will finish the job and lead the rest of the Tethereds to a new life. I don't even think the Tethered Adelaide even knows that Jason is actually Red's son at the end.

You miss the most important part. That both sets of children are MIXED genetically. Which is why they are the only family who survived bc both family is both equally human and tethered. Whereas, one was nurtured as humans while the other as tethered. So it was a fair fight. And the son raised as a human had the tethered power to controlled the boy in the red, which is how he got him to walk into the flame.

So you can make the argument that the Tethered were made by the same people who figured out how to do transplants (maybe as a way of keeping backups of people or just bodies ready to have brains and souls transplanted into them). The souls inside the Tethered are initially trapped in the "sunken place" and were controlled by the people on the surface (as no other brains are controlling them, they operate on mindless automation). The idea being that while in the sunken place you go mad due to isolation and lack of control.
Redelaide (Red who switched with Adelaide) managed to escape her sunken place and replace Adelred (Adelaide who got switched with Red), leaving Adelred herself stuck in her own sunken place until she did her dance with broke out the Tethered from their own sunken places, now insane and looking to commit some violence to the surface dwellers (with Adelred with her own vendetta against Redelaide).

  • Mike Robbins
Mike Robbins 23 days ago +2

The logic of the Tethered makes no sense. So they have intricate underground places where they have people who mimic what's on the surface. What happens when one of them takes a trip on an airplane? Who provides the rabbits? Who forces the Tethered to mate (and produce equivalent offspring)? What about the immigrants, do they get doppelgangers once they move to the states? Even the undocumented ones? What about the American born who leaves the country? Where does theirs go? ETC
I think if they treated it like a parallel universe or an alternate dimension it would have made more sense.

There's more we're all missing. The fluoride conspiracy wasn't real and neither is the conspiracy that the Government created these clones. The most obvious point was how they got their clothes/"presents"/behaviors down there. If they were just clones then they'd all be naked running around down there in the dark with no light or power, but they're not. JP tells us to "watch [ourselves]" and that "we are our own worst enemy" and the point is that WE created US, not the government or whoever else we want to blame. They're the dark part of ourselves that spawn from complacency and neglect and will ultimately destroy us if we're not careful, whether individually or as a nation (Jer 11:11)
