It's not you. Date labels on food make no sense.

When people clean out their fridge, they look at whatever date is on the label and throw it in the trash if it’s past that date. But the chances are that you’re throwing out tons of perfectly good food because date labels on food are often really confusing.
Food labels can mean many different things and often don’t give you any indication of whether the food is safe to eat or not. Many people assume that they’re federally regulated, but baby formula is the only product required to have consistent date labels. For everything else it’s up to the states to decide.
This creates a confusing state-by-state patchwork of labels with everything from “use by” to “freshest before” to “sell by” to “packaged on.”
And all this confusion causes us to waste tons of food every year. All the uneaten food waste costs Americans over $200 billion each year, and two thirds of that comes from households.
If we came up with a unified, easy to understand date label system we could save money, food, and help the environment, all just by changing how we put date labels on the things we eat. is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. Expiration dates aren’t the only confusing part of food packaging. Here’s why the “natural” food label on so many grocery store items is meaningless:

Here in the UK are system is simple (To me at least). There are two types of date labelling - Use by or - Best before. If a product has a Best before the date it will be on a product that is less dangerous if consumed after that date such as bread or pasta. Use by is used for only products that will cause harm after that date. Such as milk, meat and Crème Fraiche these products must be consumed before or on the date shown. Simple enough I would say, obviously you have more room to make a judgement on Best before as the product is less likely to cause you harm. Regarding Use by you will have a much high risk of harm to your self by consuming that product after the date.

This is super irresponsible. There may be confusion about poorly managed regulations (note that this is in the US), but there are still regulations for a reason! Pretty much all foods have hazards associated with them and the “smell test” cannot detect listeria, salmonella, or E. coli (which are the most common causes of foodborne illnesses and people die from them every year, especially children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised). You just gave out dangerous medical advice, Vox. Throw out expired food!!!

I don't find it confusing. Given the chemical additives to many foods, things can look and smell fine and have lost their nutritional value. I fully support a standard method and expiration dates are better than relying on someone's personal perception. I'd rather throw food away (or maybe not buy too much),

Problem isn't labels, it's people buying too much food or food nobody likes and then throwing it away. Eat what you buy. If you are not going to eat it, don't buy it. If you are too stupid to figure out what the label means then bite into the food and you will find out.

Interesting that you left off one state in your 'map' of states. You got 49 states including the smallest one but you left off Arkansas smack in the middle. So the map really is meaningless because upon examination it tells us nothing other than someone doesn't pay attention to details and on a video like this... it puts everything in question as to accuracy.

I remember years ago the amount of times my flatmates would throw away perfectly fresh veggies just because it was past the best before date. What was worse is that food still contained in single use plastics were mixed up in a black bag. This is a common experience especially in student halls and needs to be dealt with.🙅‍♀️ Don't buy what you don't need, freeze it or donate to local food banks/charities that will utilise them. I know people who go days without food and heavily relies on donations. I've just discovered recently that nearly 4 million people in the UK use food banks, yet there is a lot of stigma surrounding it. That's so crazy! 😡

Rule of thumb: The apples you buy at the grocery store are about a year old. Dairy (milk, cream, etc) will turn sour and smell when no longer good, milk will also congeal when bad (if you see a skin, you may not want to use it). Meat (cow and pig) have food coloring added to give that fresh look when being sold in a store. So color can be deceiving. Greasy, smells, and if it looks like it has a colony on it, think bad. Oddly enough if fish smells like “fish”, it too has gone bad. Fish should smell fresh and not fishy. The FDA website has a table breakdown of every perishable food item on the market. It’s worth a look. Oh and freezing, after six months it’s mostly ice crystals. Your normal kitchen appliances can not flash freeze nor maintain a perfect temperature of 0c/32f. So even in the freezer, your food is going bad.

I've worked in a grocery store for 23 years. Dates are NOT there for us to track our inventory. No clue where you got that idea from.
Dates are there because each state has different reasons for dates on each product to keep the consumer safe. Fresh cut meat goes bad after 2-3 days. But before it is cut and still sealed in it's air tight packaging, it can sit in the back cooler for sometimes weeks before it goes out of date.
Dairy products are usually fresh for up to 6 days after the expiration date, if unopened. But most opened items(on pretty much everything) should be used within 6 days of opening, but can still be good. You just have to use your judgment.
