England to Spain Ferry Trip on MS Pont Aven

  • Published on May 28, 2017
  • My ferry trip form Plymouth to Santander on Brittany Ferries MS Pont Aven and the things I noticed along the way. Also includes a 'look around' in Santander and I also travelled on to Bilbao by bus which took 1 hour 30mins. As usual there may be 1 or 2 errors in the video so double check any info yourself if you are planning a trip.

Yes was just on the pont aven this week, there is an area of the ship where dogs are housed and a fenced off area for their owners to walk them

We did the return journey, got absolutely smashed in the Bay of Biscay in a storm.
A brilliant crossing for me but no so good if you have no sea legs

Great video pity about the over weight family telling their story .

Sold to the man in the tan frown! I’ve been humming and ha-ing about this crossing for some considerable time (I live in Spain), with no knowledge about the ship or facilities. This looks like the sort of thing I enjoy. I used to love the Harwich-Hoek van Holland crossing as it took a good few hours. This looks even better.

Been that route myself, the Bay of Biscay is stomach churning especially in a force 8. Nothing like a good figure of eight roll to make you queasy. Me and my brother had the restaurant to ourselves for the trip. We were most amused when the band in the bar, who were gamely trying to play, all their equipment slid across the dance floor followed by the band.

If I could choose one line to travel by in all of Europe I think this would be it. Although I would have gone on the Val de Loire in 1993 right after it was introduced to the line. Seems like legendary ferry crossing. Although I have travelled between Bergen and Newcastle as well as Ancona Patras with Minoan Lines (Europa Palace). Also good ferry travels. A bit more boring was Stockholm-Mariehamns (Cinderella) and Oslo-Fredrikshavn (Stena Saga).

Corrections. The Plymouth Santander does NNOTmake use of a pilot. Also, Plymouth is the largest city on the south coast of England.

I would argue that Plymouth is on the south coast of England and in any case Portsmouth has a larger population

@Andrew Sebastian Rothgarn Antonsen Well you would know all about it being easy to be a douchebag. Unnecessary .

    • Andrew Sebastian Rothgarn Antonsen
Andrew Sebastian Rothgarn Antonsen 8 months ago

It would probably have been quicker for you to Google "Brittany Ferries" or "MS Pont Aven" than to type your comment. The prices also varies depending on the season etc. so the info would be rather useless for anyone planning the trip themselves. But I guess it´s always easier to be a bit of a douchebag...

No internet gaming cafe on board. No place to set up a LAN party on the water. I guess a ship has to budget for roaming charges for direct satellite uplink as there is no 5G or LTE service on ships. Can't wait for Iridium II satellite service to become available so you can have cheap unlimited internet anywhere even in the middle of the sea.

Thank you for a great video! I learnt of Brittany Ferries less than a year ago from another Trip Report Vlogger (who is also quite good but too interested in "fully flexible" and 1st Class travel). You have given me travel ideas for my 2019 UK/Europe trip. Add to that I have subscribed!

Does it load from the bow, or stern? do the cars with caravans need to back in? Or do they make a u turn inside the ship to get off?

    • Vincent de Guard
      Vincent de Guard Year ago

can load/unload either way. reversing/backing-in would only be in-case of a failure of "doors"
