England to Spain Ferry Trip on MS Pont Aven

  • Published on May 28, 2017
  • My ferry trip form Plymouth to Santander on Brittany Ferries MS Pont Aven and the things I noticed along the way. Also includes a 'look around' in Santander and I also travelled on to Bilbao by bus which took 1 hour 30mins. As usual there may be 1 or 2 errors in the video so double check any info yourself if you are planning a trip.

Sold to the man in the tan frown! I’ve been humming and ha-ing about this crossing for some considerable time (I live in Spain), with no knowledge about the ship or facilities. This looks like the sort of thing I enjoy. I used to love the Harwich-Hoek van Holland crossing as it took a good few hours. This looks even better.

Been that route myself, the Bay of Biscay is stomach churning especially in a force 8. Nothing like a good figure of eight roll to make you queasy. Me and my brother had the restaurant to ourselves for the trip. We were most amused when the band in the bar, who were gamely trying to play, all their equipment slid across the dance floor followed by the band.

If I could choose one line to travel by in all of Europe I think this would be it. Although I would have gone on the Val de Loire in 1993 right after it was introduced to the line. Seems like legendary ferry crossing. Although I have travelled between Bergen and Newcastle as well as Ancona Patras with Minoan Lines (Europa Palace). Also good ferry travels. A bit more boring was Stockholm-Mariehamns (Cinderella) and Oslo-Fredrikshavn (Stena Saga).

It would probably have been quicker for you to Google "Brittany Ferries" or "MS Pont Aven" than to type your comment. The prices also varies depending on the season etc. so the info would be rather useless for anyone planning the trip themselves. But I guess it´s always easier to be a bit of a douchebag...

No internet gaming cafe on board. No place to set up a LAN party on the water. I guess a ship has to budget for roaming charges for direct satellite uplink as there is no 5G or LTE service on ships. Can't wait for Iridium II satellite service to become available so you can have cheap unlimited internet anywhere even in the middle of the sea.

My 😱 dropped when it said 19.5 hours since I'm in America and none of the ferries are as long as wat is in the UK. The boat or ship is a mix of cruise and a American ferry I think

    • Mixed Gauge Videos
Mixed Gauge Videos 8 months ago

What's wrong with a 19.5 hour voyage with proper beds available? I'm thinking of ways to work this into my next BIG trip to Europe, and I have to come up from Australia, where the best we have is either the Spirit of Tasmania (a mere overnight voyage between mainland Australia and the island state of Tasmania), or expensive cruise ships.

ferries should be more like the cruise ships inside with more shops and entertainment areas like a large enough theatre for shows for passengers on very long ferry journeys that way they would have plenty to do and see to make the sailings more enjoyable and relaxing

    • Mixed Gauge Videos
Mixed Gauge Videos 8 months ago

Agreed! The Wightlink ferry across the Solent Strait was good, but very short. The Interislander from Picton to Wellington in New Zealand offers a bit more at a 3 hour voyage, as does the Australian "Spirit of Tasmania" ferry. However I see this as "something else again" and well worth doing!!!

Worst ferry crossing we ever suffered was on the tiny older ''Falaise'' as a child, {Dieppe-Newhaven} built in 1947 , Denny of Dumbarton ferry -all their ferries of that era had reputations as heavy rollers, and the tragic Princess Victoria was a vessel that never should have set sail that fateful day in January 1953.
Had never heard of the disaster until this year, [there is a very interesting interview with a survivor]..not one woman or child survived, this was not due to 'selfishness' of the men, but due to the fact the women and children were in the same lifeboat.

Normally our Captains have Pilots licences for all ports but we had replacement captains last year after some retirements. That said, in Spain ALL foreign flagged ships must take a pilot.

    • Leroy Ford

The abnormal size of the funnel is due to a program bf went for and that was to fit gas scrubbers to her exhaust system and four other ships to improve and remove certain particulates from the gases produced by her 4 main engines so it's cleaner when it emitted into the atmosphere
