White Tara Mantra (108 Repetitions)

(Om Tare Tuttare Ture Mama Ayuh Punya Jñana Pustim Kuru Svaha)
White Tara (Sanskrit: Sitatara; Tibetan: Sgrol-dkar) is sometimes called the Mother of all Buddhas and she represents the motherly aspect of compassion. Her white color signifies purity, wisdom and truth.
As a variant form of Green Tara, her mantra begins very similarly. But added to the play on the name of Tara are several words connected with long life and wellbeing.
Mama means “mine” and indicates that you’d like to possess these qualities of long life, merit, wisdom, happiness, etc. You can of course choose to wish these qualities for someone else - perhaps for a teacher or for a loved one who is ill.
Ayuh is long life (as in Ayurvedic medicine).
Punya means the merit that comes from living life ethically, and this merit is said to help one to live long and happily.
    Jnana is wisdom.
Punya and Jnana are known as the Two Accumulations. In order to become enlightened we need to accumulate merit (that is, to develop positive qualities through living ethically and meditating) but we also need to develop wisdom through deep reflection. Wisdom cannot arise without a basis of merit, but merit alone is not enough for us to become enlightened, meaning that becoming a nicer person isn’t enough - we have also to look deeply into ourselves and the world around us and to see the impermanent and insubstantial nature of all things.
Pushtim means wealth, abundance, or increase.
Kuru is a mythical land to the north of the Himalayas, which was said to be a land of long life and happiness (it may have been the original northern home of the aryans). Perhaps the association with the mythical realm of Kuru doesn’t hurt when doing the mantra. But here the word kuru is a verb form meaning “do it!” or “make it so!” (second person singular active imperative or the root k.r if that’s of any interest to you) which is what it means here. With this “make it so!” we’re imploring White Tara for an increase in wisdom, merit, and long life so that we can gain enlightenment and help all sentient beings.
svaha is an exclamation meaning “hail” or “may blessings be upon” and is a common ending to Buddhist mantras. So after making the rather bold request of White Tara above, we end with an equally emphatic salutation.

Thank You for this fantastic rendition of the White Tara mantra. Prostrations to White Tara for her continued work as a Bodhisattva helping individuals with her blessings to follow the buddhist path of the eightfold way and to adopt the bodhichitta attitude towards all of their actions. As a God able to grant the boon of longevity to worthy individuals, let us all dedicate the merit of chanting this mantra to this work of White Tara so that more individuals can achieve enlightenment and freedom from the suffering of samsara in this lifetime. Hi, Pedro: Here is the meaning of White Tara’s Long Life Mantra:
(om tare tuttare ture = Tara) (mama = my) (ayur = life force and health) (jnana = knowledge-wisdom) (punye = merit ) (puting = increase and thrive) (kuruye soha = make it so)!
“Tara, make my life force and health, knowledge-wisdom, and merit increase. Make it so!”
Different schools of Tibetan Buddhism recite the mantra in different ways. Sometimes "JNANA" comes after "AYUR". In this case, "PUNYE" comes before "JNANA".

whenever we say OM we are calling Arya Tara.
TARE means please release me from the prison of samsara.
OM means “Oh Arya Tara,” calling, please liberate me and all beings from samsara’s prison. TUTTARE TURA means please protect us from the dangers of fire, water, elephants, lions, there are eight dangers listed. In reality fire is anger, water means attachment, elephants means ignorance, lion means pride. The list is of eight different types of delusions, we have fears of these delusions so we requesting.
“TUTTARE TURA” means please liberate me from the eight fears.
MAMA AYUR PUNAYA means bestow long life, good fortune and wisdom.
The entire meaning of the mantra is “Oh Arya Tara please liberate myself and all beings from samsara’s prison. Please protect us from the eight fears or eight dangers or dangers of fire, water and so forth. Please bestow long life, good fortune and wisdom.

What an irony. Before the clip came on there was an advert for the austrian far right party, trying to instill fear and anxiousness. Hearing the mantra after seeing this it almost seems like my private universe is constellating in a way as for me to see and experience how compassion fuses into the hatred and transmuting it along the way. Thank you for this beautiful piece

I have discovered Buddha actually has been recognized as a saint and I think he deserves it. Many Catholics are embracing meditation and learning about zen and Buddhism which is awesome. Just do research about jesus and buddha and u will see many similarities. I am positive both are in heaven/nirvana together. Buddhism has pulled me out of real bad depression and anxiety. I thank BUDDHA for his profound teachings. Namaste

    • KaZ Cruse Akers Writes
KaZ Cruse Akers Writes 2 months ago

Marta eyore The Buddha said not to keep bad friends. And you are being a bad friend. The Buddha said take what he taught that works for you and leave the rest and that you never had to believe everything he said. Exactly the opposite of your Bible. The Buddha says you have choice. If your choice is to try to proselytize here, please take it someplace else and allow those of us who love this mantra to appreciate it for its beauty and its value.

    • KaZ Cruse Akers Writes
KaZ Cruse Akers Writes 2 months ago

Marta eyore so why do you keep comparing Buddhism to christianity ? You came to Buddhism it did not come to you. If you can’t learn anything other than christianity why do you bother being here and dialoguing with a learned Buddhist? You are far from the teacher and teaching the lessons that apply to Buddhism.

    • KaZ Cruse Akers Writes
KaZ Cruse Akers Writes 2 months ago

Marta eyore typical response from a “god-fearing” Christian. Put others down to lift your opinion and beliefs up. Far from holy.

    • KaZ Cruse Akers Writes
KaZ Cruse Akers Writes 2 months ago

Marta eyore liberation-is-the-way is absolutely correct. There is no real correlation between christianity and Buddhism other than the golden rule. Buddhism has absolutely no personal god, nothing lauds over us to tell us when we are good or bad or punishes us for behavior that this “ entity” claims is against its will. We have volition and must answer for our own behavior and deal with our karma. No wrath, no vengeance. That is polar opposite of Buddhism. If Jesus existed the Buddha and Jesus would not have met because Buddha existed hundreds of years prior to Jesus.
