I'm Kenyan and travelling around the world is my dream though I've never left Kenya. sadly, its a hard dream to realize for those of us who come from lower income countries. For westerners, 20k USD is fairly inexpensive but here its a huge challenge with the average monthly wage being below 100 USD. your channel inspires me a lot and I hope that one day my dream comes true.

I stayed in university housing in southern Wales, United Kingdom. I had my own room and bathroom, and then shared a kitchen with 5 other people. Although I booked the largest room they had, it cost around $35- $40 per night to stay there (smaller rooms with smaller beds were less expensive). But, the location was walkable to everything I could need. And there were dozens of trains, per day, that could take me anywhere I wanted to go in the UK. So, because of that reason, I lived in university housing in Wales for 3 months this year (and I am 52 years old).

I figured around 12-15,000.00 for a year. Luckily for me I am retiring in the next year or two, and I am planning on selling my house and just hitting the road and seeing where it takes me. I won’t have to work, but I will have to watch my nickels. Peace and love.

    Just a tip for London:
DON'T stay in London, stay OUTSIDE THE CITY, you can get an *Oyster Card* which will give you discounts on train fairs and you can easily get up to London in 20 mins or so, but do a *lil bit of research* .

I travelled around the world for four years. I used a working holiday visa in the UK --got to live like a local and then used the strong pound to travel from Nepal overland back to Europe. I worked as an aupair in Vienna, got another working visa for New Zealnd --where I picked apples for money and lived in a van. I spent a year In Ecuador as a student living in an indigenous village, and worked on an archaeological dig in Belize. This was in my early 20s I never had more than $5000 in my bank account--but I managed to have great experiences! Now, in my 30s --I travel with more luxury--(airBnBs instead of hostles) but I make more $ than when I was 20-which is also a fun way to travel.

Thank you for the tips. My family and I recently spent three weeks in Europe by using air miles from our credit cards. Not everyone likes credit cards, but we have a business and have to spend the money on it anyway. So we figure why not get the points for travel. :) My family and I love to travel together; explore and try and try new foods. I'm taking notes so we can do more of it. :) - Michelle

1995, trip around the world. Excellent hotels, cities, restaurants, 60 days, $15,000, or about $200 per day, first class. Could have been cheaper hotels, cheaper food. $100 for travel, plane, trains, ground, taxis, saved and budgeted as going along, $100 per day for hotel and food, covers everything. Australia, Bali, Java, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, India, Egypt, Greece, Italy, home. Best 60 days of my life, exceeded my wildest dreams. Cancer death wish trip, 90% death rate cancer, smooth muscle tissue of the lower bowel. Climbed the pyramids (strictly forbidden) and did all the great stuff. Still alive 23 years later. Go to have my prayer answered to see my two children graduate from college. Got my three wishes, motorcycle, world trip, wilderness nature retreat in Northern Minnesota. I was lucky. I outlived Steve Jobs with his cancer. I consider long life better than $6 billion. Follow your bliss. When you do the life you think you ought to be living becomes the life you are living. Good luck to us all.

I did it on £17k UK. That's about $23000 US.
I spent 5 months in NZ and had a car the whole time, so fuel was a big part of my budget.
SE ASIA can be done really cheaply if you hostel it.
Japan was as expensive as uk.
When I hit America on eay home I lived in hotels in LA, San Fran and Vegas.
It could be done much cheaper but I'm older and lived it up a bit....

Even in the same region, prices may vary from country to country. For example Sweden is slightly cheaper than Norway and Eastern European countries are super cheap, also Costa Rica is more expensive than Nicaragua, but you'll have a better attention in Costa Rica since it's a more developed country when it comes to tourism.
So I guess the amount of money you'll need will depend of the destinations you choose, for how long you wanna travel and if wanna do it as a backpacker or a more fancy traveler.
I think that if you know how to budget 10k a year is good cash.

+Brocklod Hi, It's a local tax we have to pay yearly based on type of property you live in. All homes are put into bands (categories) and what you pay is assessed by the band. The tax is meant to pay for amenities.

I've hitchhiked and/or worked for transport on boats, ships and planes around the world. Often solo pilots just want someone to talk to on private planes. You can work yachts as crew. Cruise ships will sometimes take you on if you're willing to work in the galley or help entertain guests, etc. There's plenty of creative ways to reduce or eliminate transport over the oceans if you're not in a hurry and not picky about where you'll end up. It's the difference between being a tourist or traveler. Let serendipity rule and it'll be a lot more fun and interesting.

I’m American, and I started long-term traveling by quitting my retail job to work a seasonal job in Juneau, Alaska for 6 months. It was by far the best time I’ve had in my entire life, thus far. After the Alaskan summer season, I went home for 2 months & earned an au pair visa, and now I’m in Madrid, Spain. Au pairing is definitely a great way to travel bc you earn pocket money and have no bills (you live w/a host family that provides you a private room and all of your meals). The only problem I encountered was a personal one - I missed nature like crazy, and didn’t get along well w/the big city that is Madrid, so I’ll soon volunteer in a hostel that is for rock climbers!
