What's Going On With The Boring Company | Untangled

  • Published on Apr 14, 2019
  • The Boring Company is one of Elon Musk's many futuristic projects, alongside Tesla and SpaceX. It promises to build high-speed tunnels that will dramatically change your commute. But The Boring Company has yet to build a single commercial tunnel. Elon Musk recently announced a Las Vegas tunnel, which could be the first completed project for The Boring Company.

So a terry cell rents 6 fully autonomous Teslas. Each Tesla can carry over a ton of exxxplosives or even just cans of gasoline with a simple timer and a detonator. Fill each Tesla and send them into the tunnel with nobody inside, set the timer 5 minutes apart and send one in 5 minutes after the next. Once the simultaneous detonation occurs along the whole tunnel, there will be complete chaos. Due to the tiny diameter of the tunnel there is no where for the blast or even just the smoke to dissipate, just the fumes would injure many people. The bigger issue is that people would wake up to the danger and see that there is nowhere to run when something happens in the small diameter tunnels. That loss of confidence would cause people to abandon using the tunnels and they will sit there unused with the outlay never to be recouped. The autonomous part of the tunnel is the danger because of bad people, how would you stop it?

I want to see the Hawthorne tunnel example with ten cars in it vs ten cars on the street ... same as the one car vs one car only with more cars. I do not think think the one on one gets the point across easily.

Everybody is gushing about this and not paying attention to the real problems that are evident. The tunnels are going to become a deathtrap of congestion, there is no room for other lanes and only one vehicle can fit at a time, how is that going to help congestion!? What happens when there is a broken vehicle in the middle of a tunnel? There is only 2 ways out and in the case of blockage, only 1 way. We know sea level is going to rise in the near future and this will cause serious problems for coastal areas and cities. How is tunnels underground a good idea then, when they will become submerged!? These are just the tip of the iceberg why the boring company is only there to get people gushing and throwing investments at Musk. The only thing he is talented in, is making everyone believe his ideas are great and throw money at him. He's an expert of exploiting people's weaknesses for profit. Same goes for Tesla cars. The battery technology of these cars are an environmental disaster, not to mention what they will do to their owners wallet. Same thing for repair costs. What about SpaceX? How will that benefit the world and it's people? Cool technology yes, but not something that will save us from problems we have in this world.. He is selling emperor's clothes while acting likeable and creating an audience of blind followers who think he is a god.

Boring Company tunnels =/= normal transportation tunnels. The big difference between Boring Company tunnels and the tunnels we all know and love is size. Boring Company believes you don't need more than you need to get the job done whereas tunnels we've had for ages and use daily are made larger to allow tolerances for air circulation, accidents and disaster relief, etc. This could be their Achilles heel but it is also part of the design. Smaller tunnels means reduced air volume, lower cost of construction, and more direct destinations. We'll see what real-world use results in. There shouldn't be any issues with vehicles jack knifing inside as long as the tunnels and vehicles are adequately maintained. So we'll see.

What happens if there is an accident though. (Although it should be rare) the tunnels look too tight to get out of say a burning or crushed vehicle, then what? There's no room either side of the car to walk to an escape. They look too tight to even open normal car doors.
It'll be interesting to see how/if they deal with these safety concerns

Unless the Boring Company makes some substantive improvement to tunnel boring technology or makes some substantive progress in mass transit, I'm not feeling it. At this point in time, the Boring Company doesn't even look like it's got a product. They're just... digging holes in the ground.

The Boring Company makes no sense with current cars and would make far less sense with self driving cars.

    • B5429671 XJ
      B5429671 XJ 7 months ago

@abcxyz Like I said, tunnels are 3 times more than a bridge and you could build elevated roads to elevate traffic as it is. Subways carry FAR more people than roads and it is hard enough to build subways under cities.
Whether or not that is the goal, the end result is the same: autonomous cars solve all traffic current problems.

    • B5429671 XJ
      B5429671 XJ 7 months ago

@abcxyz Tunnels are at least 3 times as expensive as bridges and even using raise highways and overpasses over intersections are rarely built. Full self driving will completely eliminate all traffic problems (once human drivers are banned).

    • abcxyz
      abcxyz 7 months ago

@B5429671 XJ is it the aim to solve traffic jams with Tesla's FSD capability? Traffic jams and slowed down traffic are very costly economically, I'm not a tunnel expert or anything but afaik that is one thing a cheaper tunnel system could (profitably) assist with.

    • B5429671 XJ
      B5429671 XJ 7 months ago

@abcxyz I'm going to try to ignore that tautology…
Yes, tunnels have a lot of benefits. We could remove cars from streets and make all transportation underground. It would make cities very walkable and very "green." However, that is very expensive. The problem is that the problem the Boring Company is supposed to solve is also supposed to be solved by Tesla literally next year as it claims it can make self-driving cars.

  • Orange Aquatics

One of the great things about the Boring company doing tunnels is resources....minerals, soil, water..etc. it could have pipes inside and/or outside the tunnels...for gas...water..etc. Its a no brainer.

These tunnels should not be used for car transport but primarily for cargo delivery in fully automated "pods" that can go right under shopping malls and warehouses or residential pick up points. A huge amount of oversized trucks would be removed from the cities this way.
