No, it's common knowledge the BBC is fake news. Sir Cliff, manipulation of the miners strike, one-sided brexit reporting, et al. I am surprised they don't put out a disclaimer. One reason not to watch the BBC and I am happy to report I am oblivious of their programs.

UK Intelligence assets are running a covert operation pretending to represent the Russian Federation using a disinformation campaign to try to overthrow the duly elected government of the United States of America. The assets include Matt Tait infiltrating the University of Austin, C. S. infiltrating the Trump Tower IT service, the employees of Orbis Business Intelligence, Joseph Mifsud and other employees of Link Campus University colocated at the University of Malta, High Commissioner to the UK Alexander John Gosse Downer, Stefan A. Halper and associates, along with others at GCHQ, in London, Greece and Israel. They pretend to be working as British spies, but are not engaged in collecting information. Instead, they fabricate disinformation about links to to the Russian Federation in a plot to overthrow the U.S. government. They put forth unsubstantiated claims to be working with Peter W. Smith, George Papadopoulos, Carter Page, and the Trumps, all of which have been denied. Such an operation would need to be authorized at the UK Foreign Secretary level and could not be a rogue operation.

I find this to be worrying. Will we, at some time in the near future, have to stop relying on facial and voice recognition to attribute ideas and information to other humans? I am aware it effectively arouses the paranoid mind, but given the sheer power (a key word here) that information holds in any political or economic system, I feel it is sensible to be worried and anticipate. The question is, how?

News isn't just what you hear about, it's what you don't hear about too. The BBC often fail to report important things occurring all over the world and at home. This is another reason why many people are compelled to obtain their news from more than just the mainstream media these days. The more news options we have the better.

    • Isaac L
      Isaac L 6 months ago

Jason Devon more news is only better when it’s fact based and not meant to mislead. That’s the problem with a lot of these news sources outside the mainstream. They’re driven by agenda and use mistruths to make their points. Not all of them, obviously.

All this means is that we have to work even harder to find the truth. Instead of relying on what what we are being told by one or two sources. We should be challenge it all often. I never read one article or listen to one news report and take it as absolute truth. I do more digging around to arrive at a conclusion that would make sense.
Back in school, writing papers you always had to have sources to probe your point. In a court case you have to have sources and evidence to make your argument.

+PetitAmiral The point where it becomes harmful is when people doubt things that are evidently true. We should be skeptical always, always adjust for bias, but of course, some things are true.

    • PetitAmiral
      PetitAmiral 6 months ago +1

It's not just a matter of skepticism and feeling proud about it. Not trusting anything or anyone is bad for society. Think of these dramas where people would call authorities for help and the people on the line were thinking it was a joke
Radical skepticism is the easy way out of the problem of over saturation of information and fake news

Further improving deepfakes to make news more fake than it already is, whereas we run the risk to get blackmailed with it. Seems like a bad idea to me.

    • Hamaji Neo
      Hamaji Neo 6 months ago

Fel N news isn’t “fake” it’s just biased at most

  • Fel N
    Fel N 6 months ago +1

Personally I think they should just stop the development for deepfakes (improve them). Since it's not so clear to me what for benefit it could really give. And for so far with this video I think the dangers to deepfakes far more outweigh the "economic" benefit it can bring us. Further improving deepfakes to make news more fake than it already is, whereas we run the risk to get blackmailed with it, which puts more mistrust towards video-evidence. Seems like a bad idea to me.

We could treat it like how we did with cloning, but in the end it would not take long before some kind of corporate would develop deepfakes secretly behind our backs. Luckily there are others like universities who study deepfakes to spot them, unfortunately we can't spot good deepfakes without knowing how to create one ourselves. Maybe we should set our sight on authenticating real-videos, but I suppose that's also an ambitious idea.
