What rights do people have, and where do they come from? Who gets to make decisions for others, and on what authority? And how can we organize society to meet people’s needs? Tom Mullaney shows how these questions challenged an entire nation during the upheaval of the French Revolution.

I think one of the biggest thing they forgot to mention was how Robespierre was one of the most influential figures at the forefront of the revolution, like he essentially got it started, he had great morals at first, he wasn’t just some guy who started the terror at the end of the revolution lmao (although he did flip a switch on his morals near the end, which got him beheaded as well rip)

Short, concise and addressing most essentials of the story. Can’t really say I learned much myself, but certainly of value for those who are short on time but still want to know the basics of the revolution.

Moral of story? Government should cut taxes and spending during bad times. Also, inflation doesn't help. It's a shame France's downfall was due to them helping America achieve its independence.

France was so backward. Brittany was far more advanced socially and legally in the 800s than France was nearly 1000 years later.
In England, the Breton master-of-all-trades Alan Rufus has already instituted progressive tax reforms in 1086 that required all aristocrats to pay their fair share of taxes (a slightly higher tax rate than smallholders). Then he created Parliament in 1089.
Very soon after 1300, Brittany included representatives of the Third Estate in its equivalent of Parliament.

I'm not sure the idea that freedom is fundamental to human nature was an accurate view of reality. What's in human nature are things like hatred, fear, anger, a lust for power, and a desire for security. Freedom is not naturally occurring. The line that goes "man is born free but is everywhere in chains" is a rather foolish statement, and it's sad that it is. Man is born into the chains of dependency.

0:37. That’s where you are sort of wrong. The enlightenment was supported, but so was Catholicism. In fact the priest who brought back Catholicism to France, William Joseph Chaminade, was welcomed with open arms by the common Frenchman.

just be clear the clergy was part of the first estate and nobles were part of the second estate
and another point the peasants didn't give the tax money to the king it was collected but he first estate whom who pocketed the money which is why the crown wasn't receiving any of the tax revenue leading to more of the financial crisis

A tragic clog in the wheel of commerce, not quite at ease yet, not with fuelling the nation’s still domineered by chemical industries and nuclear. The giants foot has shifted to conglomerate takeovers. An influx of immigrants is sure to be next to test the resolve of what competing forces can bear the weight of. 50,000 a year should see some serious rearranging taking shape.
