First Time I Saw Me: Trans Voices | Jamie Clayton | Netflix + GLAAD

  • Published on Jun 13, 2018
  • Netflix and GLAAD know that authentic media stories and characters are pivotal in creating acceptance. This is especially true for trans people, who have either been invisible in mainstream media or portrayed using inaccurate and offensive stereotypes. And that’s why when you finally see a trans character that resonates with you as real and authentic - where you can see a part of yourself in the story - it is so powerful.

Yawn. HE is NOT a woman. I can sit in a garage all day long and it doesn't make me a car. I'm sure he's a nice person ... but very confused.

I am a trans woman in an LGBT community theatre group and I thought acting would give me a space where if I got to play female parts then my womanhood would be recognized at least in those spaces unlike in the real world but I found it poses challenges of its own and I keep wondering whether I should give up but seeing Jamie play Nomi in Sense8 helps encourage the part of me that doesn't want to give up.

Cis genders don't know what it's like to be trans?? Yes, right. As a woman how does a trans know what it is to be a woman, really? They don't, they can't. They only know what it is to be men who WANT to be women, and do and act in a way that mirrors a woman, but to truly be a woman how would they ever be that or know that experience? Also, to me it is obvious this trans person is a man, you can here it in his voice. The voice sounds like a man pretending to be a woman, not a woman.

    • sunnymas
      sunnymas 5 months ago

@jennlee21 - It is different. They are women, who wants to expose as a women.
Her brain is female, since her own pregnancy.
They cannot be and live male. They are always handicaped at this.
Voice are only how about the voice strings. Like a guitar string.
You can pitch the same guitar string in high or low sound.
I tried to live male, since my birth male born. I tried to avoid my problems.
I hoped, that my problems would solve one day.
But I failed totally. I never get acceptance as a man.
Every women rejects me. Because I cannot be a man, and I don´t want to be one.
I still look male, and I try to live it the rest of my life. But it is bad and sad for me.
My male body in the mirror is always a stranger for me.
But I must stay single. Because I don´t fit to anybody.
I´m always in struggle, why I am not born female.
My body has 80 % too low male hormones, and 25 % too much female hormones. (for men.)
Nobody can change it. All my testosterone injections, even in my childhood failed.
It´s called AIS. Three levels. If I had got the middle or hig level, I would be born female.
But I got the low level.
So my body starts a small female puberty. I must hide my growing breast.
Even I feel like a woman. I don´t want to loose by breast. It would be a big horror for me.
I´m in fear of breast cancer. My mother had breast cancer.
So I go to the x-ray check of my breast. It is painfull but important.
Don´t judge people, who you don´t know all about them.
Be happy, and I´m happy, if you don´t have my problems.

That being said, i am also glad that these people arent able to reproduce themselve. How will the kid grow up, what effect will this have on society.

I love Nomi's character. I'm a transguy not a girl but I feel so less alone seeing her in the show just being herself and living her life. Her mom is kinda like mine and that's horrible but I feel understood. I always get so happy when she gets called by her name because I can't have this right now. It gives me hope that some day I will be able to just be myself and live my life as myself. She shows me that it's worth staying strong and not giving up.

It's called acting, its not real life, its make believe. If every character can only be played by people who really are this character its no longer acting, its a documentary. Its just playing yourself. If a trans can only be played by a trans. A boxer can only be played by a boxer. A killer can only be played by a real killer. A cop must be played by a cop. An astronaut, a drugsdealer, a politician, etc? This is ridiculous. That would be the end of acting. Meryl streep can kiss all her roles goodbye. Sophies Choice? Streep was never a holocaust surviver. She was never anything of all the roles she played. Ridonculous.

    • Joe Shalanaya
      Joe Shalanaya 9 months ago

Why your ludicrous examples excluded race and gender? That's what this is about, not about astronauts or politicians, those are just things people do, occupations, hobbies. How many actors play a different race or gender? Not many, what this is about is a fair representation, that not every cis person should play trans character at a time in history when trans actors are discriminated against. The point of acting is playing a different character, when trans person plays a trans character, they play a different character that only has the same gender, it's still a different character, with a different name and different story and life, the same like a white man playing a character of white race. Why is it that usually only trans people can understand this reality, and I'm not even trans myself, but I think most actors and filmmakers are awakening to this reality as well, especially in Europe and Asia. Independent cinema is not afraid to break these norms. But it doesn't mean that trans people can't play cis people, it just means to at least give them the part of a trans character if nothing else at this time and age.

I love Jamie so much. She is such a great actress and her scenes with Freema and Michael were always were my favorite in Sense8. I actually remember the first time watching Sense8 and during her first scenes I couldn't help but hear a masculine tone to her voice and a guy's face on her. But as the series went on and I got to know her and the rest of the characters, anything that sounded or looked masculine about her just slipped away and I saw her more as a woman. The point is I believe Jamie is the first trans I ever encountered, and Jamie, you made the best first impression possible, girl!!!!

She is a trans woman. Means she is a male. Trans women are not women. Women are females. There is the blatant line. Hence, that´s why they are called trans in the first place. Trans women are not women, they are trans women. Women are not trans women, they are women.
You can´t change your sex, get over it. I respect her as a trans woman, but don´t expect people to believe she is a female, because that is like saying the earth is flat.
Anyway, I love her as Nomi in Sense 8, because she isn´t reinforcing sexist stereotypes. The writers made sure not to be sexist and misogynist when they wrote Nomi. Being a woman is not make up, heels and dresses. Sadly, many trans identified males show their male entitlement, that they dictate women what womanhood is - unlike Jamie. Womanhood means intelligence, strength, wisdom, not heels, make-up, long hair, and all the things the patriarchal society considers "feminine".
Femininity and masculinity are social constructs, gender is a social construct. Neuroscientists are literally yelling this fact since almost a decade. There is not "female brain" or "male brain" as there is no "male/female kidneys/livers/heart".

He's a guy whether he likes it or not. Has he experienced childbirth? Labor pains? Menstruation? Fear of rape? Nursing? Sorry folks - this dude doesn't qualify.

Not a woman. A man living as a woman. A man who feels, prefers, living as a female. Voice exactly like a male. Whatever. Great. Do you. But, don't burden society with your issues. We didn't sign up for that. Trans. 00.03% of population. Don't expect anything to change for you. Don't burden 100s of millions of american citizens with your issues. Your mind may say otherwise. Your body may not agree. Without cosmetics, surgery, estrogen, you're 100% bonafide male. Be honest.

    • Theballonist
      Theballonist 9 months ago

Patricia Wallach She’s not a burden to society, she is enriching us. Imagine the value of having a role model if your child had been assigned the wrong gender. If your child was in mental and physical pain every day from trying to perform as a man or as a women when it feels alien to them.
If anything, trans experiences give cis people an opportunity to re-examine our own genders. How do I know who I am? What is my role in the world? The contrast between different experiences is where the richness of the world is.
