First Time I Saw Me: Trans Voices | Jamie Clayton | Netflix + GLAAD

  • Опубликовано: 13 июн 2018
  • Netflix and GLAAD know that authentic media stories and characters are pivotal in creating acceptance. This is especially true for trans people, who have either been invisible in mainstream media or portrayed using inaccurate and offensive stereotypes. And that’s why when you finally see a trans character that resonates with you as real and authentic - where you can see a part of yourself in the story - it is so powerful.

I love Nomi's character. I'm a transguy not a girl but I feel so less alone seeing her in the show just being herself and living her life. Her mom is kinda like mine and that's horrible but I feel understood. I always get so happy when she gets called by her name because I can't have this right now. It gives me hope that some day I will be able to just be myself and live my life as myself. She shows me that it's worth staying strong and not giving up.

It's called acting, its not real life, its make believe. If every character can only be played by people who really are this character its no longer acting, its a documentary. Its just playing yourself. If a trans can only be played by a trans. A boxer can only be played by a boxer. A killer can only be played by a real killer. A cop must be played by a cop. An astronaut, a drugsdealer, a politician, etc? This is ridiculous. That would be the end of acting. Meryl streep can kiss all her roles goodbye. Sophies Choice? Streep was never a holocaust surviver. She was never anything of all the roles she played. Ridonculous.

    • Joe Shalanaya
      Joe Shalanaya 26 дней назад

Why your ludicrous examples excluded race and gender? That's what this is about, not about astronauts or politicians, those are just things people do, occupations, hobbies. How many actors play a different race or gender? Not many, what this is about is a fair representation, that not every cis person should play trans character at a time in history when trans actors are discriminated against. The point of acting is playing a different character, when trans person plays a trans character, they play a different character that only has the same gender, it's still a different character, with a different name and different story and life, the same like a white man playing a character of white race. Why is it that usually only trans people can understand this reality, and I'm not even trans myself, but I think most actors and filmmakers are awakening to this reality as well, especially in Europe and Asia. Independent cinema is not afraid to break these norms. But it doesn't mean that trans people can't play cis people, it just means to at least give them the part of a trans character if nothing else at this time and age.

I actually remember the first time watching Sense8 and during her first scenes I couldn't help but hear a masculine tone to her voice and a guy's face on her. But as the series went on and I got to know her and the rest of the characters, anything that sounded or looked masculine about her just slipped away and I saw her more as a woman. The point is I believe Jamie is the first trans I ever encountered, and Jamie, you made the best first impression possible, girl!!!!

I don't get it. I dont know why people want to be "represented", really I don't get it. I enjoy fantasy and how make me imagine scenarios, places, situations and new people. The idea of be me reprrsentated isn't attractive at all to me cuz it the reality what I want to "scape" through reading or watching movies. It's very odd and kind of interesting to me that message of people wanted to be represented because I really don't get it at all.

It's a Me Davo! It's about feeling normal. It's about people seeing people like you in stories and understanding them and empathizing with them. It's about your perspective being shown. Maybe you don't need representation because your perspective is not marginalized or misunderstood. It's very important for minorities though.

She is a trans woman. Means she is a male. Trans women are not women. Women are females. There is the blatant line. Hence, that´s why they are called trans in the first place. Trans women are not women, they are trans women. Women are not trans women, they are women.
You can´t change your sex, get over it. I respect her as a trans woman, but don´t expect people to believe she is a female, because that is like saying the earth is flat.
Anyway, I love her as Nomi in Sense 8, because she isn´t reinforcing sexist stereotypes. The writers made sure not to be sexist and misogynist when they wrote Nomi. Being a woman is not make up, heels and dresses. Sadly, many trans identified males show their male entitlement, that they dictate women what womanhood is - unlike Jamie. Womanhood means intelligence, strength, wisdom, not heels, make-up, long hair, and all the things the patriarchal society considers "feminine".
Femininity and masculinity are social constructs, gender is a social construct. Neuroscientists are literally yelling this fact since almost a decade. There is not "female brain" or "male brain" as there is no "male/female kidneys/livers/heart".

Not a woman. A man living as a woman. A man who feels, prefers, living as a female. Voice exactly like a male. Whatever. Great. Do you. But, don't burden society with your issues. We didn't sign up for that. Trans. 00.03% of population. Don't expect anything to change for you. Don't burden 100s of millions of american citizens with your issues. Your mind may say otherwise. Your body may not agree. Without cosmetics, surgery, estrogen, you're 100% bonafide male. Be honest.

    • Theballonist
      Theballonist 24 дня назад

Patricia Wallach She’s not a burden to society, she is enriching us. Imagine the value of having a role model if your child had been assigned the wrong gender. If your child was in mental and physical pain every day from trying to perform as a man or as a women when it feels alien to them.
If anything, trans experiences give cis people an opportunity to re-examine our own genders. How do I know who I am? What is my role in the world? The contrast between different experiences is where the richness of the world is.

Awesome. I really loved the character of Nomi in Sense8 and Jamie Clayton portrayed her just wonderfully. However when it comes to story telling, I think all kinds of character features, be it trans, gay, hetero or literally anything else, should only really be included if it actually makes sense for that specific story. It did for Sense8 and the series was better for it, but not all stories can be about sexual identity or orientation, therefore I don't think we'll see a trans spy all that soon. Neat idea though.

    • Debott
      Debott Месяц назад

I would very much like to agree. However I believe ethnicity as well as most forms of disabilities are in comparison very superficial attributes to any person. If you have any of those in your show it becomes immediately apparent. Sexuality on the other hand is a much more intimate trait to any character or person. It's something that becomes only then apparent when it is told or shown directly to the audience, at which point it is already part of the story and no longer a detail.
For example, I personally wouldn't even have realized that Nomi (or Jamie Clayton for that matter) are trans if it hadn't explicitly been said so in the show. Another example that keeps coming to my mind is the character of Dumbledore from Harry Potter whom the author, J.K. Rowling, Post Skriptum attributed to be gay. Whereas in the entire story of Harry Potter Dumbledore never even shows a glimpse into what is sexual orientation might be. So does his sexuality matter for the story? Does it even play any role? I don't think so.
I know this is a very delicate topic right here and I would love to be proven wrong. But the way I see our current media, this is just how it has been working for the last decades. With a little hope this might change in coming years (Netflix is doing a good job in that regard already), even though I can't quite imagine how.

    • Rainbowocean 27
      Rainbowocean 27 Месяц назад +2

Debott it doesn't have to have a lot to do with the story, like with having characters with different ethnicities, or a character with a disability for example. It can just be part of the character without being a necessary part of the story in my opinion

He kinda looks like jacksepticeye with a bunch of make up, a wig, in a dress, and a ton of plastic surgery on his body, now I don't hate transgenders I'm just disgusted at the fact that someone can walk up to a trained surgeon and say " I'm depressed about having a penis, can you cut it off for me?" And actually do it That's like me saying to a trained surgeon " hey doc I'm depressed about having a left arm, I mean I don't really use it much and I can only identify as a handicapped person if you cut it off for me. " and them actually doing for you but since it has to do with gender, depression, and brain chemistry that doesn't align it suddenly validates a doctor cutting off people's perfectly healthy sex organs because he was confused about what gender he was RECOGNIZED not assigned at birth. And I'm welcome to respond to anyone and and have conversation with anyone who wants to. What’s wrong with good actors that happen to be cisgender white strait and male? Also I don’t think it’s healthy for her to try and be a gender that she is not. Just my opinion though.

    • Theballonist
      Theballonist 24 дня назад

Its also impossible for a cisgender actor to play the role of a trans woman who has been on hormones a long time properly. The external shift is biologically complex, with changes to the appearance of your skin and hair that are difficult to mimic with makeup. And then there is the internal emotional shift. Our lives are recorded in our faces. A lifetime lived as a trans person carries a different set of scars than those acquired as a cis man. Its not enough to be a “good actor”. If you asked the best actor on earth to play a role he had few reference points for, he would fall back on the tropes that he has seen, which doesn’t translate into much of a performance.

    • Nia Gillies
Nia Gillies 2 месяца назад +4

there is nothing wrong with straight cis gender actors but if they are playing trans it is much better to cast a trans actor. Trans actor can bring their knowledge to the role and as of right now in history the only roles trans actors get are as trans people so if cis gender actors take those roles away it means taking jobs away from trans actors. I agree with you I am glad she is living her genuine female gender.
