It makes me sad that she was tied in with the Nancy Kerrigan attack. That didn’t need to happen because Tonya was a fantastic skater. Nancy may have looked prettier and more graceful, but Tonya had the skills and the power.

There is no excuse for what she did, but there is also no denying her talent. Brought up in a very abusive, broken home, no support from her own mother - or anyone, the committee telling her she wasnt pretty enough, too fat... She overcame all of that and was the first american skater to land a triple axel in competition. Sadly, she is not remembered (nor do some folks have no clue) for any of that.

It’s a shame what happened with her. She was way better than Nancy Kerrigan so i see no reason she would want her taken out. Her crazy mother probably schemed with her husband at the time.

Her husband called himself her agent. They were really into the Rocky movies. Her husband took to heart when Mick was protecting Rock by setting up his fights with weaker fighter to keep the title. I could see him arranging the attack on Nancy without her knowledge and the embarrassment she must of felt after finding out.

Ok Just asking the question probably everyone wants answered. Maybe I'm being naive. I have not seen the movie. Did she know about the attack beforehand or not. I saw a documentary and just don't understand why someone would do that to another person.

Harding did not want to attend NW regionals that year. At the time she said she had a sore back. Today she says it was because Jeff had just beat her, and she did not want to be seen with bruises on her face. She was able to skip regionals and still get a pass because as it turned out, she got a death threat. Many folk believe she actually sent it to herself. In any case, her story about this keeps changing and changing

Ok thanks. I will see the movie but sometimes only parts of it are true the way Hollywood wants etc etc. I appreciate you explaining this to me though, yes her upbringing was f***** I agree. I just thought by now she could have released some inner guilt by apologising or something. Sorta like Mike Tyson (Bite incident) did with Evander Holyfield and Holy forgave him.

    • MegaTurkeylips
      MegaTurkeylips 7 месяцев назад +1

I just saw the movie. Her idiotic 'bodyguard' had without her knowledge sent death threats to her by mail that totally screwed up her performance for about a year. Then without her knowing this he offered for a thousand bucks to her husband that they could hire someone to send death threats by mail to Nancy. Knowing how this screwed her up, Tonya knew of it but didn't protest. She had no idea the idiots were going to escalate this the way they did. She was a pawn, in my opinion.

Tonya was the first woman to complete a triple axel in the short program, and she was the first ever to complete a triple axel combination with the double toe loop. Tonya was also the first woman to land two triple axel jumps in the same competition, and went on to become an Olympian. The triple axel, normally performed by male ice-skaters, to my knowledge only eight female ice-skaters have successfully landed the triple axel in international competitions - and Tonya is one of those eight. No matter how she is remembered in the history of figure ice-skating, these accomplishments can never be taken away from her.

And by the same token, I contend that Robert Franklin Stroud (the Birdman of Alcatraz) should’ve been awarded an honorary doctorate for his many contributions in the field of ornithology - specifically to avian pathology, in spite of how he is remembered in history. Parenthetically, Stroud could still be awarded such a honorary degree - posthumously.

Im absolutely no expert but i loved the movie. What a lot of " experts " online miss is that she was exciting to watch. Gutsy, edgy and skated a bit more like a man. At this time ladies skating was definitely second class to the mens ( not IMO) . I find a lot of her contemporaries lovely but a bit dull. She had a modern style missing from the technically amazing but ultimately dull eastern bloc too.
