The reality is Ms. DeVos doesn't live in reality. She neither attended nor worked as an educator in public or charter schools. She only has a platform because she's a wealthy heir. I commend the real teacher for making good points while keeping his cool during this two on one barrage. Notice that the interview is cut short as he gains the upper hand. I condemn the host for unethically taking a side when he knows he should serve as a moderator and for sensationally bringing up the Soviet Union after the interview. This video is pathetic propaganda.

This is not about choice, it's about how can we educate American children in the most efficient way. Why are you focusing on Charter schools? This is why I'm in the middle, conservatives fight light idiots on the wrong ideas. We need more engineers and computer sciences students. Lets come together not divide.

We shouldn't be forced to have our community tax dollars go to failing schools with teachers who suck at their jobs. The money should go to the parents and with that money they will choose which schools rise and fall. It's called competition and with it we will see better teachers and more innovative schools. With that kind of money floating around there will be a revolution of new schools popping up everywhere trying to get there hands on those vouchers, it's a brilliant and simple idea. What do we have to lose, we spend more money as tax payers then ever on these public schools as they continue to decline. America is now ranked 40th in math. The time to do something is now.

I worked in 2 different charter schools in Cleveland and they were both AWFUL! Because a for-profit company ran each of these the schools, they made SO many cuts it was ridiculous. The books were outdated, the teachers were under-educated, there were NO art supplies, even though art was a subject being taught. And they lied to the parents relentlessly. The parents were told that all of us (teachers) had masters' degrees....most of us didn't even have teacher licenses, including myself. We actually had the security guard teaching science because we could not secure a science teacher for more than a week due to low wages, no benefits and no leadership. I could go on and on and on.
I was one of those who thought choice was a positive thing in education...until I was actually involved in these charters. FOR PROFIT does NOT work in education, prisons or healthcare.
Competition would work for schools IF there was actually a choice. Charter schools do not invest what is needed in order to educate our most needy students because they are in it for profits, not kids, period. John Stossel has no idea what he is talking about...

Did you catch the editing at 2:09? The previous speaker is absolutely correct: Most charters are allowed to _select_ their students (a charter is literally meant to step outside typical confines of the law [especially teacher unions]), and even when they have to take all lottery winners, they can expel trouble students back to the regular public schools. It is a scam, people. A total scam.
The truth bomb happens at 4:02. Listen carefully -- even DeVos says "that's true."

Jones is making the wrong argument here, the line of logic should be - should every institution be privatized, such as religion and education? Because the very view that the conservatives push (public choice and market economy) on every domain of society is the precise reason why universities have catered to their own clientele and turn into pits of SJW morass where 9 out of 10 professors and students are the radical liberal types. The conservative's own blind adherence to their ideology has let them down and are graduating citizens whose mission is to undermine capitalism and democracy.
DeVos said it right off the bat: "Better products". I suppose it is up to the viewer to determine whether you want your kids to come out as a product in the free market system. To also assume that parents would make good decisions for children, a priori, must know nothing about the millions of poor choices parents make with regard to their own lives and those of their children - just pick up a newspaper and there'll be no shortage of those sorts of stories.
In a way, they're both missing the point: you need a strong family in order to raise a child - the right thinks it's about the free market, the left thinks it's more state control. Fix the American nuclear family, and you'll fix the schools.

What a crock. School choice does not make things better. The truth is that adults brought down the public schools when the problem was not the schools but the parents. Parents don't have the intelligence to criticize the public schools. The public schools were the strength of this country until stupidity brought them down. Like today, before we realized it, the lying media destroyed public education. Listen to the pitiful inflection in Stossel's voice. Boy, is he full of it. There is so much lying in this report I can't keep up with it.

The reality is... she, and her family, literally made billions of dollars from school "choice." Charter schools get public money, which takes money away from public schools, perpetuating the problem. Education is a public good, not a product. These are not consumers, these are students. To her, these are "products," words spoken from her mouth, which is very telling about her intentions.

#1 reason for people against school choice: less union money. the unions have completely corrupted our current upcoming generation by basically saying it's better to pass someone along who clearly needs more help because it'll protect his/her wittle feewings (before the grammar nazis come in that was intentional) the whole reason we succeeded as a nation was because we told people if you cant do well in school, go to trade school because you either work or you starve

The problem with school choice is that those in richer neighborhoods will be getting swamped with student applications. Then the problem becomes how do we select the students that are allowed into our schools. The choice is not the parents but the school/ county administrators. So why do I think only rich neighborhoods are going to get swamped? Here is my math. In Montgomery county (3rd in $ per student) 66% of the money raised is from local sources. 27% from Maryland state(11th in $ per student). AND ONLY 3% comes from federal sources. So $12,000 that this student can take to School x does not factor in which district this student lives in. The kid that lives in Potomac/Bethesda could be bringing a school upwards of $28,000. Where a kid from another could only bring the national average of $12,000. If you were a school administrator, whose paycheck is now decided by which students you choose, what would you do? SO all school choice will end up doing is creating an even larger class system of schools where you can only go to the best schools if you live in the richest counties. OHH wait that is already happening.... So I am honestly asking what will school choice fix?

So, basically, your contending that education would be the one thing where competition would raise rates instead of lowering them? The point is to create a situation like the tech market. Sure, not everyone can afford the fresh off the line PC, but just about anyone has access to computing power beyond even some of the wildest fever dreams of the 80s.
See, the one thing you leave out of your analysis is that market forces tend to make the successful expand, which allows them to provide service for more. This tends to cause a drop in price due to the ability to work on lower margins because they require less overhead to pay for things like athletics fields or network systems (economics of scale). Include the fact that teachers will compete to be better, thus making good become the new average, one begins to see where everyone gets a better education.
And yes, it does take a little while to sift wheat from chaff, but better to encourage the sifting process than not when you know there's darnel in it.

  • David Cox
    David Cox 10 месяцев назад

“There are no shekels without shackles. The government is never going to give you money without attached requirements, even for ‘opportunity scholarships,’ as vouchers are called today.
Example: “A Florida proposal for school vouchers insisted that (1) you can’t require a child to attend a religious chapel, (2) you can’t discriminate in hiring practices, and (3) you can’t select students from just your church body, but must open the school to anyone who wants to attend. Also with the government’s fresh take on what constitutes male and female, your place of learning must provide transgender bathrooms.” Amireh Al-Haddad
Vouchers are a Trojan Horse for private schools. The money will bring the regs, and pretty soon they will become government schools, just like public schools have become. And then there will be NO choice, because all choices will be the same.

The bottom line is private charter schools are scams, cherry pick the students, exclude gays and special needs, have HIDDEN tax breaks which make it VERY favorable to invest in these schools and do things like buy a property and lease it to themselves at 10X the rate and make a disguised profit off the real estate scam. This is what Betsy DeVos is signing up for. The bottom line is the charter school system was an interesting idea but has proven that it draws the greedy element who care nothing about education and everything about making money. DeVos is a fraud who knows nothing about education. Private schools? Fine, just don't use federal funds to support them. Leave the federal funds for the public school system.
Stossel is a complete idiot and doesn't get that greedy businessmen don't have any incentive to create good education, only good profits and that charter schools are dependant on federal funds, tax breaks and return on investment. This is why billionaire families like the DeVos's are supporting them. She has probably never seen the inside of a private school and neither has anyone in her family. She gives money to kill gay rights legislation and believes in conversion therapy to "cure" gays and make them straight. Eject this woman ASAP. America wake up!!

What a sick cretin Strossel is. Nobody except the brainwashed believes this garbage. This propaganda is akin to the "right to work" bills passed in some states which amounts to - the right to work for low pay and no benefits. We have garbage outcomes in our schools here in the U.S. because we do not fund public education. As a result nobody wants to become a teacher for the lousy pay, and the total infrastructure of the system of education collapses. This is by design, meaning that they unfunded education knowing that this would be the outcome. Predatory for-profit companies then come in and sell you their trash private schools.
The answer to this is to fund education. No longer tie the funding for schools to the taxes on properties in the school zone. Instead implement a state-wide tax that funds all the schools in that state. Abolish all charter schools. If people, meaning rich people, still want private schools, then they can pay out of pocket for them. However, they still have to pay the state tax.

    • Auron3991

Oh, take the lies elsewhere. Public funding for education has skyrocketed since the 70s and test scores sure aren't matching. They haven't even actually increased by any amount that would indicate correlation. Heck, South Korea is kicking our rears while spending less per dollar made by the average family.

when he said how could school be fun the little boy said they just teach us in a fun way. this should tell you that kids being happy and preforming well in school is not about the school itsel, it's about the people who are working in the schools. if schools aren't performing as we want then we need to look at the people who are running the schools not the school itself.
when we don't have the balls to fire the people who are bringing down our school systems then we run to the next best option and that's changing the school ie: school choice. The problem with continuously changing the school until you find " something that works for you" as Betsy DeVos said, then we allow undue burden on those who benefit from other convniences of the school such as location and other ulterior programs.
If we want true school choice then we need to learn the art of speaking up about our issues collectively, simply changing may not be the best solution realistically.
BTW, if public dollars are going into private schools aka private businesses then equality within school choice may, more than likely, disappear over the course of the standing of the bill which will create more of a problem than trashing the trash and corrupt people would. Unless of course there is some hardcore accountability placed upon those private entities.

both are right some Charter are picky and want students that fit their school vision: Montessori Charter prefer kids who work independently or Project Based is another. I like both these models but my son has Autism and needs more support & direction to keep him on task. Some charter cater to a variety of student needs but these charters seen to exist in larger cities.

I would like to see more charters for High Functioning Autism & Aspergers. They are smart kids but do better in smaller groups. Working on social skills is important as well as strong academics.
Because I feel that public schools do not provide right kind of environment for kids on the spectrum and even some ADHD kids, I chose to put my son in a private special education school. My parents and my husband's parents help us pay his tuition each month. We are lucky! Lots of people are not as lucky as us and have no options except public school system for their special needs child
I wish we had a public charter option. Some states do have public charters that cater to kids with ASD, Aspergers & ADHD. The kids are more accepting of each other and friendships are formed more in this type of charter school setting then in the regular public school setting. Also, all the teachers are trained in special education

Why are competing schools a good thing Betsy? Usually in competitive business the idea is to take away the competition business, ultimately putting them OUT of business! That is what proponents of publicly funded charter, voucher, scholarships and the like want. They want to profit from k-12 education. Profit that comes from our pockets in the form if taxes.
These charters, private, homeschool, and online schools are not required to follow the same guidelines or reporting that public schools do. That is obscene! How can Betsy sit their and say charters do as well and are not cherry picking the good students? She cannot possibly know the truth!
It has been 3 decades since charters were first dreamed up (in a nightmare) and we are finally getting some reliable feedback on their performance and they range from bad to just as good. They have been caught feeding children Ramen noodles with a cup of water (while involved in the federal lunch program), cherry picking students or being dumping grounds for troubled students, teaching theology instead of verified science, hiring inadequate staff and teachers, and the list goes on. It is time to help our Public Education system grow and improve not demonize it and destroy!
America was the first civilized country to offer equal and free education to its citizens. It was the leading shining example for Education and all other countries built their systems from our example. We should be proud helping contributors to our schools. Shame on anyone falling the billionaires propaganda and rhetoric who would take away our rights to equal and free education.
