One of the most unfair things about Charters is how NJ and other states underfund charter schools below the charter statute which requires 90% of conventional schools. Trenton charters are funded at 75%. Imagine if they had 100% funding!

End unions in the school systems and you will automatically you will see a drastic increase in the number/quality of people who become productive adults.

We must weigh ALL the trade offs. Unless we are going to completely dismantle public schools there are some factors not addressed in this conversation. The children who can not travel to private, charter or co-op schools due to economic, social or parent schedule constraints or have parents that just dont care will be the cost. If children are left in districts where excellent teachers have left for better paying positions in alternative schools teachers unions, federally mandated curriculumn, psuedo curiculumn experiments and education practice purchased by federal dollars will limit the teachers that are left in those districts. The subpar teachers and education system will cripple these children for generations...until the school closes. I am not saying which trade off is best. But let's have an honest conversation about it.

    Why Schools Don't Educate
    Deliberate Dumbing Down of America
Choice? Public schools are indoctrination, not education, Charter or not. Our learners are so lacking any skills or the ability to think for themselves...their best options after graduation is the military or prison.
Communist Core is a global indoctrination is not meant to educate. The globalists are creating a new world---it so happens that the old one is in the way. This world is driven by commerce and technology and the last thing they want is healthy, intelligent, articulate and free thinking subjects. Who is behind all of this Communist Core? The United Nations...a Rothschild organization and our very own government.
The people who brought us Communist Core have made millions, while our youth is washed in mind control.

Class size is the biggest bunch of BS I have ever heard. I went to school and every class was 30 to 38 students in every class and I would put my education against any of the one's today. We had no teachers aides nor very many student teachers. The teachers in the schools should have to justify their existence every year either produce or find another job. They have been dumbing down the schools for along time and it is time to stop and go back to teach to the average and not the lowest ones

So stay and wait for the school to get better in the meantime your kid suffers. Its my tax money government did not earn my money if I have to pay taxes i should be able to choose where my kid goes. This is all about government knowing whats best for my family. My kid goes to charter school and he loves it he has a smile on his face going to school. When he went to public school he dreaded it. So by getting rid of charter schools many kids will loose an opportunity.

The reality is Ms. DeVos doesn't live in reality. She neither attended nor worked as an educator in public or charter schools. She only has a platform because she's a wealthy heir. I commend the real teacher for making good points while keeping his cool during this two on one barrage. Notice that the interview is cut short as he gains the upper hand. I condemn the host for unethically taking a side when he knows he should serve as a moderator and for sensationally bringing up the Soviet Union after the interview. This video is pathetic propaganda.

This is not about choice, it's about how can we educate American children in the most efficient way. Why are you focusing on Charter schools? This is why I'm in the middle, conservatives fight light idiots on the wrong ideas. We need more engineers and computer sciences students. Lets come together not divide.

  • Non Mirage Truth Vision

We shouldn't be forced to have our community tax dollars go to failing schools with teachers who suck at their jobs. The money should go to the parents and with that money they will choose which schools rise and fall. It's called competition and with it we will see better teachers and more innovative schools. With that kind of money floating around there will be a revolution of new schools popping up everywhere trying to get there hands on those vouchers, it's a brilliant and simple idea. What do we have to lose, we spend more money as tax payers then ever on these public schools as they continue to decline. America is now ranked 40th in math. The time to do something is now.

  • Abdulmohsen Al-Kurdi Al-Milli

Better cars and schools? No problem. Better movies and music? Don't think so...

  • Margaret Garbincus

I worked in 2 different charter schools in Cleveland and they were both AWFUL! Because a for-profit company ran each of these the schools, they made SO many cuts it was ridiculous. The books were outdated, the teachers were under-educated, there were NO art supplies, even though art was a subject being taught. And they lied to the parents relentlessly. The parents were told that all of us (teachers) had masters' degrees....most of us didn't even have teacher licenses, including myself. We actually had the security guard teaching science because we could not secure a science teacher for more than a week due to low wages, no benefits and no leadership. I could go on and on and on.
I was one of those who thought choice was a positive thing in education...until I was actually involved in these charters. FOR PROFIT does NOT work in education, prisons or healthcare.
Competition would work for schools IF there was actually a choice. Charter schools do not invest what is needed in order to educate our most needy students because they are in it for profits, not kids, period. John Stossel has no idea what he is talking about...

Did you catch the editing at 2:09? The previous speaker is absolutely correct: Most charters are allowed to _select_ their students (a charter is literally meant to step outside typical confines of the law [especially teacher unions]), and even when they have to take all lottery winners, they can expel trouble students back to the regular public schools. It is a scam, people. A total scam.

Jones is making the wrong argument here, the line of logic should be - should every institution be privatized, such as religion and education? Because the very view that the conservatives push (public choice and market economy) on every domain of society is the precise reason why universities have catered to their own clientele and turn into pits of SJW morass where 9 out of 10 professors and students are the radical liberal types. The conservative's own blind adherence to their ideology has let them down and are graduating citizens whose mission is to undermine capitalism and democracy.
DeVos said it right off the bat: "Better products". I suppose it is up to the viewer to determine whether you want your kids to come out as a product in the free market system. To also assume that parents would make good decisions for children, a priori, must know nothing about the millions of poor choices parents make with regard to their own lives and those of their children - just pick up a newspaper and there'll be no shortage of those sorts of stories.
In a way, they're both missing the point: you need a strong family in order to raise a child - the right thinks it's about the free market, the left thinks it's more state control. Fix the American nuclear family, and you'll fix the schools.

What a crock. School choice does not make things better. The truth is that adults brought down the public schools when the problem was not the schools but the parents. Parents don't have the intelligence to criticize the public schools. The public schools were the strength of this country until stupidity brought them down. Like today, before we realized it, the lying media destroyed public education. Listen to the pitiful inflection in Stossel's voice. Boy, is he full of it. There is so much lying in this report I can't keep up with it.

  • Professor Castellanos

The reality is... she, and her family, literally made billions of dollars from school "choice." Charter schools get public money, which takes money away from public schools, perpetuating the problem. Education is a public good, not a product. These are not consumers, these are students. To her, these are "products," words spoken from her mouth, which is very telling about her intentions.

  • Kevin Burkett

#1 reason for people against school choice: less union money. the unions have completely corrupted our current upcoming generation by basically saying it's better to pass someone along who clearly needs more help because it'll protect his/her wittle feewings (before the grammar nazis come in that was intentional) the whole reason we succeeded as a nation was because we told people if you cant do well in school, go to trade school because you either work or you starve
