Most people who think tipping is bad for workers probably never worked for tips. I think the average hourly wage for waitresses is like $13 to $16 dollars. Tipping on % also makes sense because if you're rich, you can afford to pay the waitress 15% of the $100 you just paid for that ounce of wine from the 1800s. Boom, that's an hour's wage for moving the wine from storage to a table. Tipping is also closer to the "workers own the means of production" model. If nobody eats at your restaurant, your ass isn't getting $15 dollars an hour.

4:44 I'd love to see one on our country's shitty healthcare scheme. How you get it, what happens if you don't have it, and how in other countries they regulate prices and here the corporations get to pick and choose their own outragous prices. Those long stays in the hospital without it leave most people bankrupt.

  • Louie Gonzalez

Here in California, servers get 12 dollars a hour which is minimum wage, which is plenty of money for the job they do, and they get tips. So many servers here cash in like 800-1,000 a week just in tips depending on the restaurant, and they still complain when people don’t tip, when all they did was right down a food order and do their job they’re already getting paid to do. That’s why I don’t feel bad when I don’t tip; they make way too much fucking money for the simple job they do

  • _ MyM4 _

Actually here in Japan, it's normally considered rude to tip, because it is taken as you are taking pity on them. It's the best.

@player I ask that because if you were a small business owner you would know that the profit margins are dangerously small and increasing minimum wage (or increasing their current wage any further) will make them fire their staff. You think the owners are sitting and the world is throwing money at them while the workers are working hard for minimum wage but that's not the case. Many of them are broke and they will increase the pay if they could.

    • oshke
      oshke 17 hours ago

      @player Not a business owner I assume?

    • player
      player 18 hours ago

oshke I never said that. The business owners get a lot of the money from the value surplus that doesn’t go to the workers. In a typical business. Workers produce, and the profits go to the capitalists, and the capitalist some of it to the workers in the form of wages. Business owners only have to pay as much as they’re legally required to, and enough to keep workers working. I details the problems with this before. We can even observe it empirically through the distinction between productivity and wages.
I think we should strive for a shift in economic structure, and then minimum wage laws won’t even be necessary.

    • oshke
      oshke 19 hours ago

@player I think were you're wrong is that you think that business owners can pull money out of their ass, most of the time the wage is in proportion to the revenue, so the bigger the income the bigger the wages. Let me ask you a question: Do you support a higher minimum wage?

    • player
      player 19 hours ago

oshke Yikes, this addresses nothing I’ve said. Engineers, waitresses, and the like can all get paid more, since factually workers are not getting paid as much as they produce. Even though the demand for many jobs increased, its only been getting worse. Also, if you think I’m arguing that engineers and waitresses should be paid the same, then I have nothing to say...
Also, the “just leave” argument makes no sense. First of all, there are massive problems in every country today, so there will always be something to criticize, not to mention it can be an inconvenience to leave your own country for whatever reason. Not only that, but it’s a non-sequitur. Being able to leave doesn’t stop the problem from existing.

In Finland theyll get into a fight with you if you try to even say "keep the change"
forgot to pay for a pizza and headed out, ran back halfway home and the cashier was ready to fight in order to give my change back

I very much dislike tips, like at restaurants it’s ok but when they require and guilt you into tips at every establishment it’s very annoying. like at the hairdresser or even getting a pizza from a drive thru and just everywhere

    • Romy André
Romy André 3 days ago +1

Same... My problem tho is the percentage point he made. Like I dont get it, bring expensive wine isnt more work then bringing cheap wine, so why so the tip be more? I usually leave how much I think they deserve for there work but off course stille get shamed.

  • VladdyTheBear
    VladdyTheBear 5 days ago +1

If its "minimum wage", why do you get paid below that?

    • Wippy Wallop
      Wippy Wallop 2 days ago

VladdyTheBear Because of the way restaurants work here. Most restaurants in the US go out of business in the first year, and if they had to pay their employee’s more than 2.50 an hour they would immediately go broke. The government decided “hey, let’s lower minimum wage for servers because they get tips.” So now everybody in America feel’s like they have to tip 😂😂

Pizza delivery fees going to $5+ here and then expecting a tip is cancer. My (already overpriced) pizza is $20. You are charging me $5 to bring it here. You then want me to pay you more money for doing your job?
Yeah, you can go fuck yourself. I tip well at restaurants because I like a certain level of service, but a delivery driver is doing nothing more than bringing my food to me. It is literally in their job title.
