We've been talking a LOT about the Joker lately, but today we are shifting focus to a different version of our smiling bad guy. The Heath Ledger version of the Joker from Christopher Nolan's Batman movie, The Dark Knight. I rewatched it recently and started to wonder, have we misunderstood this story the whole time? Could the Joker actually be the HERO of Gotham City, not Batman? We shall see, Theorists!

The irony that nobody really picked up on is how in Nolan's Batman Trilogy it's usually the villains that have the higher moral ground. I mean in Dark Knight itself the people are saved because a criminal had such quality of character that he's the one that throws out the detonator that could save his life in order to save the lives of the people on the other boat. The same people who ended up not activating their detonator not because it was morally wrong but because the guy on that boat didn't have the backbone to do it. Even the cops didn't have the guts to use the detonator or to do the right thing.

It's actually a running theme where Gotham is exactly as corrupt as Ra's said it was, and then Joker was right about every ordinary citizen's cowardice and finally Bane was right about how easy it would be to hold the city hostage while forcing the US government itself to not make any moves. It's the criminals that save the day in Dark Knight and Selina the thief who kills Bane to save Batman in Dark Knight Rises. In the Nolanverse bad guys are objectively pure while normal people are morally gray and easily corrupted.

This also seeps into this video's point. Alfred tells the story of how he was helping his government find a jewel thief who was stopping them from bribing and controlling the local tribes. This is literally the tale of the original Jiraiya (check out Gaijin Goomba's channel) or as we might be more familiar with Robin Hood. Alfred was actually the villain of his own story but he told it from his perspective. (Everybody is the hero of their own story.) He called the thief illogical. Why would you give away such valuable treasure. But the underlying Nolan point is that money is only valued by the weak and corrupt just like Joker would point out to the Russian mobster. Instead the thief was protecting his people and his act of giving away the bribes was to spit in the face of villainous Great Britain. This is similar to Lin Tse-hsu's dumping of illegal Opium smuggled into China by the East India Company. To the British it was crazy. That opium cost money and was making the British money. But to Lin it was poisoning his people and the drug was already decreed by the Emperor as contraband. So he dumped it.

The Joker does not alert the mob that the money is being tracked. About a quarter of the movie reinforces that it is corrupt cops. That is how the tension/mistrust is established between Gordon and Dent.

The first time I had a tingle about this theory was when he killed his henchmen during the bank robbery. He disregarded their lives because they were greedy and didn't have a valid reason to create the chaos aside from money.

Yeah so the hero theory can be discarded after one of the first things you said, namely that the Joker blows up hospitals.

I mean... Painting Joker as a hero might be too generous. He executes these plans and targets the crime bosses. But that's just because they're the most invulnerable people in Gotham. The most fun to toy with. On the surface, his plan may have achieved some wholesome goals. But his motive isn't clear, so assuming that he's working to save Gotham is a bit of an undeserved assumption. He was forcibly stopped, after all. Had his plan continued, he may have lived up to his chaotic claims in the end and gotham may well have been burned down.

Yeah, I think this video is excellent proof of the idea that if you really want to believe horseshit tastes like ice-cream, you'll find a way to rationalise it.
The joker is just a sad man who wants to prove that everyone shares his psychosis, to prove that he's not a psycho and it's everyone else who has the problem (classic insanity play). At the beginning of the film the city is actually better off because of Batman (the mob is running scared and corruption is dropping, something we can see by Harvey Dent's election to DA).
The joker's an excellent character, but the whole idea of him 'cleaning up' Gotham runs counter to both his actions and his words. He has no plan and he certainly has no sense of justice. Saying he planned all this just because of the outcome is like saying the 2011 Tsunami planned the Fukushima meltdown.
The storm doesn't care if it uproots a few trees, that's just what it does

I never killed a singe civilian. I killed those who created the corruption that destroyed Gotham, and I did everything the law and Batman failed to do. They fought FOR the corruption of the system, this changing nothing, I fought the corruption of the system, and them by extension, and I won.
