Don't have the flight manual for the DC-10, does have three fuel tanks, left wing, right wing, and center, typical is either an analog gauge like used in your land vehicle, or a digital readout in pounds, liters, or gallons, one for each tank, also valves for which tank is used, up to the pilot to watch this carefully to maintain center of gravity. Just feel the pilots were responsible for this.

  • NickDe39
    NickDe39 15 days ago

Ran across post just recently, been a pilot since I was 18 years old, 80 years old now, preflight by the pilot or copolite always consisted of checking the fuel levels, sounds like this was vastly overlooked, you as the pilot are responsible for the. Also have the fps or mks systems of units of measurement, fps is English and so are the Canadians, England was always at war for years with France, the origins of the mks system. A liter is 2.2 pounds and if you don't know the difference between a liter and a pound, you are an idiot.

Reminds me of years back when an international group of space scientists wasted years of time building a probe, launched it into space toward Mars or Neptune or whatever, before realizing they never converted back from metric and the thing was doomed to fly to nowhere.
That being said, a wayward probe won't kill me. (Hold the proctologist jokes...heh heh) My pilot, even after a decade of training and flight time, CAN kill me. And if they're disrespectful of detail, duty, and checklists, they WILL kill me. Demote or imprison. Cannot have pilots on "Auto-Pilot."

Why did they only notice when the engine went out? Even a stupid car has a fuel warning light, but in something that cannot simply stop to refuel, why not add a range view, like again the vast majority of cars have. Heck even in the 80s they should have been able to subtract range and distance to intended target. It may not account for additional fuel usage by bad weather, etc., but there should be a computer system checking the target is reachable, and definitively one telling you, you only have x miles left, not an "oh look the engine stopped, I wonder why" fuel tank monitoring system.
Then again this is a plane made by the same company, that adds a system to dive down the nose and then forgets to tell the pilots about it.

demoted despite saving everyone's lives... wow. Were they responsible for the idiot who screwed up filling fuel?

    • minicoopertn
      minicoopertn 23 days ago

Yes the pilots were responsible. A pilot will calculate how much fuel is required allowing for a little extra for weather or alternate landing destination and then a little extra to allow for delays. They are then responsible for verifying the correct amount has been added to the tanks before takeoff.

  • James Gardner

    • I Love GD

James Gardner actually if our system did not exist, this would not have happened. every country in the world except for 3 countries have not accepted the metric system. the US is one of these 3 countries. we should be accepting the metric system instead of the system we’re using atm.
