Build a DIY screen out of recycled parts for cheap

Laptop users generally have to just put up with having a single main screen, but thanks to upcycling we can build a DIY portable secondary screen for laptops using recycled parts to keep the cost as low as $25! It not only performs really well, but it looks incredibly unique - it's a piece of solid industrial tech this one! Once you use two screens you can never go back!

eBay affiliate link for the control board; add the model number as shown in the video:

UK buyers: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=9&pub=5575117832&toolid=10001&campid=5337657473&customid=&icep_uq=lcd+monitor+controller+board&icep_sellerId=&icep_ex_kw=&icep_sortBy=12&icep_catId=&icep_minPrice=&icep_maxPrice=&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229508&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg

If your screen isn't listed, most sellers of the control boards allow you to contact them directly and they will program a control board for your specific screen at no extra cost. Just send them the model number and you should be good to go.

This is a wonderful idea, yielding excellent results. I salvaged the LCD from an old monitor, and now not only does it have an HDMI port that it previously did not, but your assembly instructions and aesthetic tips are great!

Автор TheGMUniverse ( назад)
Can anyone tell me how much AMPS this board needs? 1 AMP does not seem enough as the screen appears to be really dark.

Автор Henry Mejia ( назад)
yes Matt,
I have watch all your videos and I absolutely love them, I have a project in mind i just don't want to mess it up, it would help me greatly if you could answer some of my questions. maybe even make a video on it.
have you ever seen the "BUILD YOUR OWN 3 screen laptop" video by JerryRigEverything?
where a version of project Valerie by Razor is constructed by using hinges.
if you have; lets say you built two your DIY screens from old laptops, would there be a way to create a version of
a 3 screen laptop by using these?
Also, would there be a way to make the DIY screens usb compatible? like the ones in the "BUILD YOUR OWN 3 screen Laptop" video
last question do you think there is a way to connect both the DIY screens and the main laptop to the same power source, like you did in this video?
thank you sir keep making videos

Автор MostLow ( назад)
I like your projects and you seem like a pretty cool/genuine fellow. I've started this little project hoping to make a sort of portable monitor for my pc. Not many videos for making your own wireless hdmi and not sure how reasonable a venture that would be but with a wireless hdmi thinking i could use this for my apple tv and all! hoping to potentially build on this and have a camera coupled with and the whole deal...exciting stuff

Hello I was wondering if you ever tried a touch led screen diy monitor

Автор Seabass363 ( назад)
The screen of my old laptop does not give me a response when I power it on? Can I test the screen after dismantling the laptop; if so how? Any help would be appreciated, I really would like to try this out.

Автор PalmLP ( назад)
Guys I need your opinion. I want to use this idea to "build" an ultra thin secondary monitor. My plan is to buy a cheap monitor, srewing it up and dividing the casing and the electronics. Then, I expand all cables leading to the LCD screen and hide the plugs below the table. Then I use something like the carbon to build nice but thin enclosure. What do you think?

Автор Aaron Darren ( назад)
hey DIY Perks in your video i notice a statue with blue leds good job on the video

Could i use the monitor to run my ps4 on?

When I connect my screen to the Controller board. The system goes on, screen flashes white and goes back off. Keeps doing that. If I just test the board without screen it works fine. What am I doing wrong? I use 12v and 600mA does the current mater?

Hi everyone. I want to make an AIO PC with my old laptop screen attached to a PC case. I'll cut a window on the side panel of the PC case for the screen. The question is, can i use the PC's PSU to power the LCD controller board? I'm thinking to cut one molex connector from the PSU and solder the wire to the LCD controller board. It will supply 12v but i'm not sure about the current. Any suggestion?

so basically I can make 5 of these and connect it to my PC which I'm gonna be building with my team and it does support hdmi right? cuz I'm connecting 2 HDMI's, 2 VGA's and a DVI

oh and can I power the monitors from the PC itself since the current power supply has a power output port just above the input port

Hej Can you make A reuse of an old laptop keyboard ??

Автор Ryan Flynn ( назад)
So, I'm a little confused. I've opened up an old tv and an old computer monitor but both of them seem to be completely different from the laptop monitor you used. Both of my monitors seem to be backlit by an array of LEDs which makes me wonder if this project is only possible with an LED screen instead of an LCD (I know nothing about this sort of stuff so I could be completely wrong). Also I had trouble finding control boards for either of my panels, one didn't even have a model number and the other has a very strange setup. I really like this idea and really wanna try making it myself but I seem to be stumped on the part where to get a control board, any help would be greatly appreciated!

If I took the control board out from a cracked pc-monitor, I could use it for this purpose if the connectors is correct.

Автор Ryan Haney ( назад)
Hey, quick question- I'm going to use this as a side monitor for my desktop- can i power the screen with a usb that plugs into my motherboard? if so, would i have to solder the voltage regulator in between the usb plug and the screen? if i cannot do this, how would i power the screen if i want to use it as a desktop monitor?

Автор voltz15 ( назад)
This starting to make me wonder if anyone can do a 60in 4k screen with a project like this?

Of course I don't think the manufactures would ever allow us to do this.

Автор Wingstar ( назад)
Personally, i would use a shoebox.

In this project can I adjust the brightness and contrast?

Автор Adrian Love ( назад)
Awesome job! I would go for a slightly different approach if I were to create a screen out -
I'd create a wall mounted version with storage shelves on the left and right sides and a central recess for housing a monitor.
The central facade could still be used as storage / vanity display for 'stuff', but would be shallower than the L/R storage. :)

Thanks for the inspiration!

Автор Xiefux ( назад)

Автор Brecht Schatteman ( назад)
Hey DIY perks, how about making adding touchscreen? It would be a big win for me since I am used to a surface pro, but I would want a bigger screen than 12" to work on. Thanks!
