How to Make a One-Click Backup Button

  • Опубликовано: 27 май 2015
  • In this video we'll be making a simple one-click backup button so that you can make data backups regularly with ease.
Here's the button I used in this project:
    eBay US/Worldwide:

Also, here are some other buttons that are compatible with this project:
OR for a 100% malware free installer use this:

Probably pointed out by someone else already, but this doubles as a hidden access hdd. Just put the button somewhere more discrete, flip a switch, and gain access to your secret files.

There is a situation this WON'T WORK = If the Drive Letter changes, the Batch file won't work. This happens if you add or remove a storage device ( not the Backup HDD) . Other than that , the app is sweet and I'm using USB HDD. Thanks !

Uhm... You should disable write caching for your Backupdrive, or you might damage the MFT on it by simply turning it off.
Same goes for external drives, or you can also dismount them with "Remove Safely" (or whatever its called in english).
I've had to deal with enough drives, that were hot swap enabled, with corrupted MFTs.
If there is any writing action still going on, which might take LONGER than what you see with your backup tool, you might create corruption.
There is a reason Safe Removal was added to Windows.
If you disable the write cache for a drive btw, you don't need to safely remove it once data transfer is completed.

  • Taco J

You know mirror mode is really not usefull because if you accidentally delete a important folder and then connect the backup disk the program will automatically delete the folder on the backup... so just remove the trashcan icon on the settings

    • Saad Ghandour
      Saad Ghandour 5 месяцев назад

Taco J for that to dont happen use the manuel copy in combination with the mirror mode, it mean the program wont start copiyng directly once ur backup drive is plugged... Like you said "automatically" , change it to manual copiyng, dats simple...

Hey DIY Perks, is it possible to reverse the data stream and make it so that every time you plug the hard drive in, it dumps all the data from that drive onto a similar folder. For instance if you wanted to make it so every time you plug in an sd card, it dumps all the picture files into a folder on your computer?

  • TheVividYoshi
    TheVividYoshi 9 месяцев назад

I actually kinda prefer using a USB disk that you just plug in to backup. It means that, if you need to leave your house in a hurry and can't dig the hard disk out of your computer, you can just grab your backup drive, and have all your files with you.

This is generally how you end up losing data after you dismount the drive whilst windows is doing a cache check or defrag on the drive. Just plug a hard drive in and use the windows encryption tool. Problem solved. Your backups are protected and corruption free. Your welcome.

Very nice tutorial for a backup drive! Is there any benefit to this vs having a drive that is set to sync automatically? Maybe freeing up system resources? I do like the option of hiting the button as the last operation of the day and let it backup after work is done - Sounds very logical to me! I am a new subscriber as of today, with notifications. I love your videos, the way you bring everything together is like you have rehearsed it all! Plus, you have a very natural and soothing teaching voice. Wow... just, wow!

you could use a old wire from a adpator and twist them onto the switch as I did not have a soldering iron to use for it. PS my switch had holes in the solder tags so i was able to use them and twist on the wires thanks for the idea Matt..:-)

How do I know if the switch I have is adequate for this project? It's a latching DP switch, but it's only rated for a max Current of 0.1A and a max DC Voltage of 32V. But I have no idea what is required to make this work, or how much the components draw.

  • talonts9

FYI, there's no reason to cut the black wire and twist it back together. Use wire strippers or a knife to cut through the insulation, then just pull it apart a bit. Do it right before soldering the other wire in, and the insulation will slowly slide back into place, nearly covering the solder joint.

Uxcell makes a latching push button switch just like that, but it has an illuminated ring around the button that you can either wire to always be on, or to be on whenever the switch is activated. This particular one comes with blue illumination, but there are others with white or red. Don't know if they are DPDT though, which seems to be what is needed. I just purchased a SPDT mode made by Ulincos for wiring up some undercabinet LED strips. I like it because I can wire it so the illuminated ring is either always lit, or lit simply when the switch is activated. I'm going to wire it so that it's always illuminated that way the switch is easy to find in the dark.

Of course automated cloud backup is better but not everyone wants to pay for that.
This method is pretty good, yea sure the build in drive may be a bit over the top but the laptop method shown would work just as well. It looks like a normal way to backup and it reduces the hassle.

Backing up to a hard drive which is INSIDE the computer is not useless, but it is pretty close! If something happens to the computer itself, be it a power surge or fire or a flood or whatever, both the main drive and the backup drive will die together. Backups should be stored on an external device, which is to be disconnected from the computer and stored in a different location, meaning another room or ideally not in the same building.
