Photographer comes face to face with a huge bull elephant.

  • Published on Aug 20, 2019
  • Wildlife biologist Ian Redmond(filming) rumbles to reassure a nervous but curious elephant, who displays with bluff charges but eventually calms down and continues feeding.
This must have been a scary encounter. Although Ian is very experienced, anything can happen in these situations as this is a wild African elephant after all!
The male elephant, named Nick because of the nick in his trunk-tip, is one of the famous cave-elephants of Mount Elgon, Kenya, studied by Redmond since 1980.

the way the elephant communicates is absolutely fascinating. it is assessing this man, it is establishing a boundary and issuing warnings. the elephant is capable of rational thinking.

I'd carry an "emergency" apple, and toss it over in cases like this, to show that I mean no harm. Also, I'd step aside to the left or right. If you stand in his path (even by accident), it looks like you're blocking his way, i.e. challenging him.
