I was freaking out the first time I saw him because I'm a huge fan of The Boondock Saints. One of my favorite movies. If you've never seen it, it's worth a watch.

It’s so fascinating to see Daryl treat Rick badly, and now they were best friends. Character development.
I didn't like him at first but as the show went on he became my favorite

Merle and Daryl came across the group and originally planned to rob them and leave. But they somehow changed their minds. Daryl went hunting to provide something to eat for the poor city slickers who were running out of food, while Merle went with the small scavenging group to Atlanta taking his rifle as the rest were unarmed. While there he tried to bully them into making him their leader.
