+Gordon Lawrence as far as I know, coal and petroolium ate not considered to be minerals of themselves. Gems or mineral acumulites also have a broad classification, since both perals and Amber are not the same make up as these others. To dismiss all information as unbelievable due to a few inaccuracies is shortsighted at best. All the better for A person without sufficient background to delve deeper to dicsern truth from innacuracies,. At least then potential for learning something rxiste. ASaying it's all untrue because some of it isn't correct won't give any the desire to look further at all. Better had you pionyed out what is and isn't accurate, there too learning something new would be present. That's what we want right. Educating a huge hey mind, insillinh scientific curiosity, I'm eating yhedesite to question everything. Otherwise, look around, yeah that part of human nature that won't try stretching it's capacity without a tangeable reward reigns supreame, and let's ignorece hold sway. I'm not saying your wrong here, I'm saying, you could of done more for your piont, and the ignorant, that just pionted to what's wrong and basically going " ha ha, you're wrong". Anybody can do that......

All minerals are rocks but all rocks are not minerals. Rocks are composed from minerals or a single mineral. Ice has several forms now considered as mineral. Also methane hydrate/methane ice meets the definition of mineral owing to its solid state under deep ocean pressure. Also crystals are rocks but not all rocks are crystals. Fossils MAY be mineral but its paleological status ihas nothing to do with its rock-type( petrological status)

I love minerals and have been collecting them all you mentioned since I was a child. Still alive. The very last mineral you mentioned is dangerous but it must be broken into the fibres so then its breathed into the lungs and then youve got a fair chance of getting sick. I enjoyed your video.

I have many quartzes (smoky quartz, amethyst, jasper, agate, chrysoprase, etc.) and some feldspars (moonstone, labradorite) in my collection. And some other minerals could go to the list, like the copper-bearing azurite and malachite, the radioactive uraninite and the chalcanthite (yes, that is naturally occuring water-soluble copper-sulphate)

  • Michael Floersch

cutterboard is absolutely correct. I am a mineralogist and with the exception of crocidolite, erionite and possibly cinnabar the rest of these minerals are essentially harmless. Galena is the most stable lead mineral and least toxic of all the lead minerals out there. I love the way she talks about galena and shows a pyrite specimen. Pyrite generally does not have arsenic and one of the main sources of gold in the world. It is known as auriferous pyrite because it has gold in its crystalline structure. I like to call it fools fools gold. She is most likely confusing it with arsenopyrite. Feldspars are the main minerals composing granites and is one of the many constituents of glass making. Fluorite is essentially insoluble in aqueous solutions. Apatite is actually exists as three minerals. Hydroxyapatie. fluoroapatite and chloroapatite. These three forms of apatite are determined by which of the one of the 3 anions is most in abundance each specimen. All 3 can be present in a the same speciman. However, Your teeth are composed of Hydroxyapatite. Fluoroapatite is more durable than hydroxyapatite. That is why fluoride acts to help prevent tooth decay. Quartz is the main constituent of glass and silicon for semiconductors and solar panels. Most beaches in the world are composed of silica sand. Approximately 100 people die a each year in the silicosis in the US. Not very dangerous unless you're the victim of a shark attack. Phenacite or a.k.a. phenakite is rare and is not generally a source of beryllium. Beryl is the main source of beryllium. Green and blue beryl are better known as emeralds and aquamarines respectively.

There are 3 different Types of "Pyrite"
    1) iron pyrite
    2) chalcopyrite
    3) rceno pyrite
Danger levels with each Associated pyrite varies.
    1) Arsenopyrite is the most dangerous for it contains arsenic.
But no matter what, if you grind, smelt or dilute any pyrite in an acid or melt using a high heat source, harmful gases will be produced. If you have a chunk of this it is harmless until you start to process it.
Just don't grind it up, breathe it or eat it and you will be just fine!
This goes for all minerals mentioned in this video.

Fluorite (fluorspar) is not very soluble; it is nearly inert. One of your fluorspar photos is of amethyst. And, yes, much of what you "document" is misinformation. For example, hydroxylapatite does not contain fluorine. It might have helped to mentioned that silica dust if formed from sanding and grinding. Just going to the beach is not particularly dangerous.

Fluoride is a neurotoxic chemical waste byproduct that damages bones and brain function it is not beneficial to bones and teeth, why don't you do some research? The main fluoride chemical added to water today is hydrofluorosilicic acid an industrial by-product from the phosphate fertilizer industry. Fluoride given to rats has been proven to cause bone cancer, liver cancer, and a host of other physical ailments.

What a load of inaccurate, alarmist tosh and pseudo-science!
I have a lot of these minerals in my collection, as well as some that I consider more dangerous (such as realgar and orpiment - both of them are arsenic sulphides). I've got no unusual health problems and I've been around them for decades in some cases!
Breathing in any type of dust over long periods will give you lung diseases of various types. Your number one mineral isn't actually toxic, it's the reaction of the body to breathing in particles of it that's the problem (you can get a similar reaction if you breathe in particles of glass fibre). This is why smoke inhalation is dangerous. It's not just because of toxic compounds in the smoke, but also the particles in the smoke that clog up the lungs.
Also "pyrite is silvery....."? Pyrite is called fools gold for a reason, it's not silvery!
Galena has lead as its main component? I'd never have guessed since it's lead sulphide! Most of the effects described are the effects of lead ingestion not galena.
"Fluoride is a soluble mineral that's a compound of Fluorspar....."? Please do your research before making stupid statements like this! Fluoride is not a mineral, or even a compound, and it can't exist on its own. Fluorides are compounds (usually of various metals) that contain fluorine ions. In this case, fluorspar is calcium fluoride. Also mining of fluorspar is harmless: It's the uses and processing of it that cause problems when the fluorine is released.
Cinnabar is a toxic mineral but not the most toxic. Also you can't get methyl and dimethyl mercury from the oxidation of cinnabar. These are organic compounds of mercury formed when certain types of bacteria react with mercury in soil, plants or water.
Many of the effects you describe in this video are the effects of processing the mineral or of one, or more, of the elements in it. This doesn't mean the mineral is toxic!
