Should you go to college? Of course, you're absolutely nothing without a college degree. Plus, the best way to get ahead in life is by starting out behind in $100K of debt.

All these comments hating on low income students that received financial aid are so backwards. If you are going to be angry at anyone, why don't you direct it at the rich mfs that literally steal billions of dollars a year that could have gone to the middle class?? Jesus Christ what happened to common sense?? also I'm upper-ish middle class and paid for my degree it sucks and was worthless and this video is so on point 😭😂

College is good, but don't get a SJW degree, or a basket weaving degree. I am getting a STEM degree, and it will help me get a better job that I love that pays well. You just have to make sure that you major in something useful and that will pay itself instead of feminist dance theory. You also have to apply the skills you learned.

Although I don't believe that college is the only way nor the best for a proper education - sometimes it can even make one be "less educated", I do believe that a certain level of education is needed for accessing happiness and global peace :)

My elder daughter, the quickest and most intelligent of my brood of kids, decided, after her cracking A levels, to go straight out to work. This was against my advice, so that shows how intelligent the woman is.

Four years later she often sat on panels interviewing graduates straight from university (college) of her age. She ran a department when 25 and was responsible for an area half the size of England by the time she had her first child.

Further education isn’t for everyone. The way it is designed in England/Wales is that it isn’t for anyone who isn’t rich enough for parents to pay. The loans system is something of a con, one that costs the taxpayer almost as much as when the courses were free. The system was probably worked out by a university graduate.

Two of my kids went to uni, one on a vocational 3-years course. My eldest went to an excellent uni, rated in the top four in the UK. He said that his degree was of benefit to his career for the first four years, little longer than the degree took to earn. The best benefit was the contacts he made as he could go on holiday on any continent and most countries without paying any accommodation costs.

Further education should not depend on your ability to pay. It should take those with the greatest potential. Or to put it another way, universities should try something entirely different to what they’re doing now.
Great video. Thanks for producing it.

I really would love to make a poll and see what demographics people in the comment section with comments such as "only jobless hipster would pay for enlightenment" or otherwise university dismissing remarks fall into. More often than not, the comments are written in a style of a high-schooler.
Now, I agree that college is not a prerequisite for a successful life. But the way university's change mindset is tremendous. It is often visible when talking with freshman people. The difference of just three/four years is outstanding. Some might say "degree just teaches you obedience". I shall dismiss this line of thought.
Will I get a job as soon as I finish my electrical engineering degree? I don't know. I in fact doubt that. But I did my entirety of electrical engineering B.Sc. in addition to minor in business for free, under a scholarship, and for that I am very thankful. Even if I had no scholarship, my university costs a rather affordable 10k USD a year. I hopefully I will continue into academia, funding my Master's through thesis research. I can do this while ding something I really love. It does feel like living in a science fiction world. Reading academic papers does at times feel like reading a chapter/section from a sci-fi novel.
(However, I should call out that Academia looks like a giant scam at times. So many 'fast-food' publications, with tag mentions of authors who contributed nothing. Alas, I am guilty myself of mentioning them. Heck, I recently came across a Chinese IEEE paper literally introducing the idea of internet hashtag to follow topics, and bringing Twitter as a potential platform for the hashtag. The paper was published in 2012 if I recall correctly. Pure scam that was.

Or, be blessed with ability, develop academic skill and work hard, then receive your $160,000 undergraduate education for me through a scholarship based on academic merit. Worked for me ;-) Seriously.
I get your point, though. I'd recommend very few people to go into debt during their training; typically only doctors or lawyers. For the rest, choose a professional degree track; nursing, business, accounting, etc., for instance, and go to a state school. The #1 business school in Texas is a state school (McCombs at UT in Austin). My wife got her BBA/MPA in 5 years in accounting, accrued no debt, and now makes over 6 figures 10 years into her field.

    1) You can get a scholarship and you don't have to pay for Tuition fee.
    2) In USA college is so expensive. In Europe, you pay in avarage around 3000$ per year for a bachelors degree.
    3) Earning a degree is not just about paying the fee, you have study and improve Yourself in this process :))
University education is not just about "getting a degree" that is what People get wrong. It is a time where you have Access to so much knowledge (books, lectures, materials, teachers) so you can improve Yourself in all areas of life. It teaches you how to become a better person, if you are willing to learn. It is kinda sad to see so many People misunderstand the meaning of education. It is not just to get a degree or pass a test, it is the process which changes you as a person.

Yeah. Particularly true for doctors. Why we need doctors who study for 8 years and then ask for high wages. Buy a book and do some selfstudy and you would be a better doctor in a half a year.I DO agree some majors are waste of time and short courses would be enough. And that the obsession with higher degree is silly. But there would be no good engineers, biologists etc without the system of higher education. Mentioning people who succeeed in entertainment business is irrelevant. So as mentioning Bill Gates. If your parents were lawers of elite society, you most currently wouldn't end up working in McDonald's if you felt out of college.

well in my case it was different, my familly, specially my aunt always told me that I won't find a job without influence or connections, it does not matter my studies or if I am a smart person ... so I studied hard, finished my career and after a week went to an interview, showed my grades, talked naturally and with passion and I was hired and after some months I was promoted, but of course I am not a rich person, but I do what I like and I can pay for my things and help my mother. I dont have debts because I got a scholarship, and that was the only way for me, because my family is not rich and I didn't know anyone important, but I like to study and research so I used that in my favor ... university is not for everyone, because we are not equal, we have to find our strengths and also be aware of our limitations and work with that and try to succed

I wish this nation would end its obsession with everyone getting a degree. They are making a degree more expensive, and no move valuable than a high school diploma. There is NO reason you should need a degree to be a bank teller, but you are more likely to get a bank teller job with a degree than without now, because of our warped sense of importance of having a degree....in ANYTHING....as long as you spent money to go to school longer.....and I say this as someone who has a degree.

It made me cry to think all these and this video I found right after , explains AMAZINGLY. Thank you . One day will come and we will all stop doing what we are doing . We need to realize that the education system is the part of the big system trying to keep our minds busy with bullshit , so that we do not create things that will harm those people at the very top earning things and benefitting by using us . So sad .

Unless you're legally required to have a degree in the field you want to work in (doctor, lawyer, nurse...), there's not much real reason to drop the cash on college. Especially at 18, when so many don't know what they want to do with their lives. Exactly nobody I know from college is working in the area of their degree, including me.

Having a degree doesn't make you smarter or more successful, but neither does having money.
Success depends on each person goals. I find the goal of having a lot of money and achieving status hollow, but that's just my point of view. My goal is to become a researcher in my field and teach because I love learning and teaching. Most of my college friends want to work for a great company or create a great company that is their path to success not mine.
I think we can't measure other people's success with the same standards as ours.
Be great at whatever you want to. Let other people be great at whatever they want to.

Here's the biggest difference. A lot of people go for some obscure degrees like "Art history" or they say "I have a passion in X" but there is no market in it. Sadly, if there is no demand for the job you won't get a job. Degree or not. If I told you, "I like painting very obscure pieces of art almost no one in the world would want." You're not going to get anywhere either.
Secondly, if you go for a degree thinking "I need a job" then you're doing it wrong. The idea of university is to learn, not to get job training. If I hear another person say "I learned how to do X in school yet my job wants me to do Y" you obviously failed your own education, because you looked at getting the "high grade for a GPA". You need to learn how to sell yourself in an interview/present yourself and how to explain that you learned something in school and you now know how to problem solve.
Literally every post secondary university that's a technical degree (You know the ones that actually hire people with degrees? Engineers.. accountants.. doctors.. yeah?) They actually need to know how to problem solve, in fact employers look at your degree as a sign that you're capable of problem solving (Based on the degree completion and what schools require you to learn).
Please do not get a higher education if you're ignorant and think "Hey. I can pass an exam, therefore I am smart" Post secondary is NOT your marks or your exams. Post secondary is about learning how to problem solve, and how to network and communicate.
Also, when it comes to paying off your student debt. Let me give you a nice big hint. STAY LOCAL. AS LOCAL AS YOU CAN. YOUR EMPLOYERS DO NOT GIVE A SHIT WHERE YOU GRADUATED FROM. My co-worker, finished an online degree, and is earning the same as me and is in the same position. He did not have to commute. Infact, he worked full-time to pay for his degree and he came out on top.
If you're one of these people who are like "Well you live once and I want to go to university and party/stay at a dorm" Then you're paying extra for that experience. Bravo. Spend that extra $30-40k on residence, that's no ones fault except your own choice. No one forces you to move.
Note: I understand some people live where there are no local post-secondary, if this is the case. Sorry. But if you work hard, you can get scholarships.
I graduated with no debt. I chose a local school. I only paid $40,000 over 4 years. Inb4 "Holy shiet $40,000?!" Well.. yes, I went to a cheaper school. I also worked part-time and 90% of my pay went to my tuition. Trust me, if you only work 15 hours a week at minimum wage. You can afford school. ($11 Min. wage here where I am.) If your min wage is different, increase work hours. I know people who work/study/sleep only. Just hustle harder, stop making excuses.

And this is why I went to college for 2 yrs & left when I realized I wasn't being taught anything practical & was going into severe debt. For job applications I've just lied & said I had a 4 yr degree at an obscure college that is no longer in business 😉. I'd say only 5% of jobs actually make you utilize knowledge taught in college (scientist, engineer, lawyer, doctor, etc...) & those are typically jobs that require post graduate studies.

the people who believe degrees dont help have used their education unknowingly. my sister has an mba is incredibly successful as a business woman, yet believes i should arbitrarily know exactly what she does and not go for the education in my career field that will fill in the blanks and expedite my climb. ive worked very hard to get to where i am and in order to move into the executive side, which im ignorant to, i need that education. for myself. not for status, but for basic fundamental knowledge of the business and management side of the leadership opportunities this industry has to offer someone of my motivational stature. if im wrong or im looking at this wrong then please correct me as i would rather not spend another 30k towards my higher education in a failed effort. especially if there are better options available to me.

The professor told me it wasn’t in my overly expensive book. He said, “Google it.” So I wasted $600 on required books that were only used for a week or 2, and had to “Google it” for the remainder of the semester. The books and the professor taught me nothing.

I dont know how it works exactly in the US but here in europe 1) you pay less than that and you actually have professors that are also working in the industry so you get relly up to date and applied knowledge. TBH comparing Gates or Jobs with the common teen that needs planned guidance in order to get a proper understanding of a field is not very accurate. These guys were self tought, but they were just way too genius to be confined in a uni. I guess thats not the case for the average Joe though...BTW, the fact that there are online books and journals about medicine it does NOT mean you can beocme a doctor just by reading them :)

The big problem is the governments monopoly on education and higher education. We are squandering our wealth sending all these kids to school on government loans and they graduate with a mortgage but no house and no marketable skills..what we have to do is stop the government aid and then colleges will be forced to cut costs so that their students can afford to go..many of those students will then be able to work their way through college like the old days. The government subsidies benefit the educational establishment who can then charge more money, enriching themselves even more at the expense of the student who gets stuck with debt.
4 year college is a waste, you learn nothing useful and you chase girls and drink beer for 4 to 6 years. What we really need to do is learn skills, job related skills, and we need more on the job training.

College and universities are places of learning and not places of job guarantees. Yes, some jobs require learning which is incredibly hard to get without the resources provided at such places but a lot don't. I think individuals should really assess their reasons for college and ask if they are here to learn about something or be set for a job and if that is the best route for either.
