Whats the point of setting freezing at 0 and boiling at 100 when we could just remember a bunch of random numbers and show how much more intelligent we are than those foolish welshmen.

Spend 10 years becoming expert at a trade like electrician, take a few biz classes at night. Then open a contracting business when you're 28, hire three guys, and make 300K+ per year.

college degrees prepare citizens to take jobs someone else created and work them while the job creator does not work. you will never get a degree in job creation. most of them pay a man to do their taxes.

A degree is only a tool. If you use a saw to hammer a nail, and a hammer to tighten a screw, expect failure and people laughing at you. Ironically I got my MBA while managing a video store, I probably should be offended by this video, but being offended really offends me. Hard work using the right tools gets the job done. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg...they worked their asses off to get there. JP is working his ass off building a successful YouTube brand. Hard work, passion, and persistence are better than any degree, but SOMETIMES a degree helps.

It offends me that the chime at the begining of the video is closer to 440 Htz than 432 Htz. You do realise that 440 Htz is the standard tuning introduced by the nazis and is the note equivalent of a racist plate of battery farmed red meat. 432 Htz is in tune with the universe and is harmonically aligned with sacred geometry.

As someone who loves academia and just learning science, mathematics, and computing, it really annoys me when ppl look down on others who don't care for it, have it, or need it to be successful in life. Success is not defined by money, a degree, having a family, or even knowledge. It's defined by you, and deciding what is important to you, and what impact (if any) you want to have in this world.
Do you and make the most of what ever experience you have and decisions you make. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates don't have degrees. Newton, Einstein and Neil deGrasse Tyson all do have degrees. These are all successful, intelligent, and impactful individuals. Yet the common factor amongst them is not whether or not they possess a degree. They took different routes to meet great life goals.
Whether college will provide you with something you need to meet your goals in life is something more applicants need to honestly ask themselves and spend more time researching.
Though I do feel most of JP's stereotypes are most common amongst those pursuing liberal arts degrees than those pursuing STEM degrees, the fact of the matter still remains that the degree will not make you happy or bring you success. It's what you learn, what skills you obtain, what you work hard to try and become.

Unfortunately employers of larger companies (like most high profile Graphic Design Firms, Google, Etc.) consider "Valuable Skills" synonymous with "Degree and Experience". The ultra corporate world is not going to risk hiring someone without a degree.
    It sucks, but it's true.

What is scary is the pervasive assumption that the point of education is to get a job. Is money the only thing that is important to you too, JP? Many people have a passion for learning really complicated stuff which takes years to master. Don't conflate the propaganda about homo economicus with the deep desire to understand something deeply, which has pay-offs for all of society. The benefits of research can often not be obvious at the time, comfortable for the powers that be or able to "monetised". The fact that you are working on a computer means exactly that. If you care to look into the history of mathematics, physics, optics, chemistry and telecommunications to see how many awesomely skilled people were working on stuff which people criticised as having no purpose, at the time they were doing it. I'm so sad that everyone has been brainwashed into thinking that the only thing they are allowed to value is so short-term and competitive that they lose sight of what the intergenerational and cross-cultural project which is what higher education has been about. It's more or less dying because of this attitude. It's desperately sad that it's been commoditised as a ticket to generalist employment, with people paying for skills they previously would have learned on the job, but that is not entirely the fault of higher education as institutions, or as centres of learning. The underlying principles need mockery, there's only schadenfreud in this video setting up the protagonist as if that is what people actually think when they enter higher ed. They know that generalist degrees as a guarantee to a job are a complete scam, but it's a scam that is a very long con and very difficult to get out of. Employers are in on it. Politicians are in on it. Don't blame the kids.
Sorry to rant. I usually love your work, but this disturbed me because I find you usually get your facts and values straight before you lampoon people. This was like watching Dr Phil pretend he's trying to be helpful.

  • Aleara

I know this is satire and shouldn't be taken seriously, but some ideas shown in this video are, in my opinion, dangerous to entertain. How many people started a business without a degree? How many of them ended up being successful? If that percentage is your chance of success, you might as well give up now. I feel like this video should have tackled the very high price of the education that is now considered essential to get a job that pays better rather than send the message that you can be successful without education. Yes, you *can* suceed without education, but you *most likely* won't.

This video, however, is NOT for the millennials, as it would be nice to see a few of them go to college simply to up their literacy and critical thinking skills. Of course, maybe going into tens of thousands worth of debt at Naropa wouldn't be the wisest choice, but some investment in study is a good thing for any life, no?

I got a 4 year degree in civil engineering. I am working as a civil design engineer. I am utilizing none of the material I learned in school on my job and I am still receiving on the job training. Could have skipped college. Literally anybody could do my job so long as they have the sanity. I used to be a better worker/employee/student straight out of high school too - being able to focus on a single assignment for a few hours to finish it, but college ruined me. Now i'm lazy as shit.

in india there's so much competition that if you don't go to college, the best you can expect is to be a bus driver. and, if you never get a masters degree, then you'll hit a bar you cannot cross very quickly.
I envy countries where you can afford to not go to college and not end up a homeless beggar.
then again, our colleges are not Left wing hubs of political correctness. not yet, thankfully.

What every teen in the U.S. needs to watch in middle school. Don't waste your money or time on a degree (a piece of paper that says that you jumped through some designated hoops like a good little monkey). Focus on trying a lot of things and figuring out what you are naturally good at. Then hon those skills so that you can market them later.
For some people college aids in that process, but that's only true for a handful of degree programs (plus you need to plan out how to best to use that time to improve you career opportunities). Unfortunately, for most people college doesn't help much at all. No one teaches you how to use college as a tool to either build a network and start your own business, or gain the right skills to find a well paying job.
Today society just tells you to get A's, but employers will never ask for your transcript because all they want to know is what can you do! Undergrad degrees mean nothing (in the U.S. at least).
Some how universities have figures out how to make themselves look indispensable without teaching students the necessary skill set for their future career (if they get hired at all) and they also fail to provide hands on experience that you need in order to succeed.
Society keeps spinning this web of lies making you think that college will lead to a better future, but all it takes is hard work, creativity, and grit. Just leave the debt and the piece of paper alone.

Clarification: This isn't an excuse to bash anyone who went to college though. How can you blame people for doing the only thing that they've been groomed to do for 12 years. Some grads just seem to say stuff like ultra spiritual dude made light of in order to dull the pain of the wasted time and money.

Having a college degree doesn't guarantee a successful future, but if you are lucky enough to get a job you are more likely to be paid more than if you didn't have a degree and have more of an opportunity to work in some fields you couldn't if you didn't have a degree. Of course, the down side is most people in United States have college loans to pay off.

  • McZidanne
    McZidanne Месяц назад

I find it hilarious those people who say they can be engineers because all the information is available online and then give Bill Gates as an example. During a degree you log hundreds of hours of lab work and another hundreds of hours bumping around books figuring out really complicated stuff and that's with help.

Tell you what, if you're as gifted as Bill Gates and can work out what you need to learn in a short amount of time, then you shouldn't go to college. There's a very small percentile of the population that's actually too gifted and will be held back by college. None of the people I met who said they could learn all I learned in my degree using google were one of them. Bill Gates wasn't a failed dropout. He quit because he realized he was done and had other plans.

Nobody wants self taught doctors, engineers or chemists. Would you have spinal surgery from a self taught person? Sure, an accredited institution doesn't guarantee you'll walk after the surgery, but it damn well increases your chances.
