Should you go to college? Of course, you're absolutely nothing without a college degree. Plus, the best way to get ahead in life is by starting out behind in $100K of debt.

    I agree and disagree.
    1) You can get a scholarship and you don't have to pay for Tuition fee.
    2) In USA college is so expensive. In Europe, you pay in avarage around 3000$ per year for a bachelors degree.
    3) Earning a degree is not just about paying the fee, you have study and improve Yourself in this process :))
University education is not just about "getting a degree" that is what People get wrong. It is a time where you have Access to so much knowledge (books, lectures, materials, teachers) so you can improve Yourself in all areas of life. It teaches you how to become a better person, if you are willing to learn. It is kinda sad to see so many People misunderstand the meaning of education. It is not just to get a degree or pass a test, it is the process which changes you as a person.

Yeah. Particularly true for doctors. Why we need doctors who study for 8 years and then ask for high wages. Buy a book and do some selfstudy and you would be a better doctor in a half a year.I DO agree some majors are waste of time and short courses would be enough. And that the obsession with higher degree is silly. But there would be no good engineers, biologists etc without the system of higher education. Mentioning people who succeeed in entertainment business is irrelevant. So as mentioning Bill Gates. If your parents were lawers of elite society, you most currently wouldn't end up working in McDonald's if you felt out of college.

well in my case it was different, my familly, specially my aunt always told me that I won't find a job without influence or connections, it does not matter my studies or if I am a smart person ... so I studied hard, finished my career and after a week went to an interview, showed my grades, talked naturally and with passion and I was hired and after some months I was promoted, but of course I am not a rich person, but I do what I like and I can pay for my things and help my mother. I dont have debts because I got a scholarship, and that was the only way for me, because my family is not rich and I didn't know anyone important, but I like to study and research so I used that in my favor ... university is not for everyone, because we are not equal, we have to find our strengths and also be aware of our limitations and work with that and try to succed

I wish this nation would end its obsession with everyone getting a degree. They are making a degree more expensive, and no move valuable than a high school diploma. There is NO reason you should need a degree to be a bank teller, but you are more likely to get a bank teller job with a degree than without now, because of our warped sense of importance of having a degree....in ANYTHING....as long as you spent money to go to school longer.....and I say this as someone who has a degree.

Today I was thinking why I was going to college and wasting the most beautiful and creative episodes of my life for something i dont even like to do . It made me cry to think all these and this video I found right after , explains AMAZINGLY. Thank you . One day will come and we will all stop doing what we are doing . We need to realize that the education system is the part of the big system trying to keep our minds busy with bullshit , so that we do not create things that will harm those people at the very top earning things and benefitting by using us . So sad .

Unless you're legally required to have a degree in the field you want to work in (doctor, lawyer, nurse...), there's not much real reason to drop the cash on college. Especially at 18, when so many don't know what they want to do with their lives. Exactly nobody I know from college is working in the area of their degree, including me.

Having a degree doesn't make you smarter or more successful, but neither does having money.
Success depends on each person goals. I find the goal of having a lot of money and achieving status hollow, but that's just my point of view. My goal is to become a researcher in my field and teach because I love learning and teaching. Most of my college friends want to work for a great company or create a great company that is their path to success not mine.
I think we can't measure other people's success with the same standards as ours.
Be great at whatever you want to. Let other people be great at whatever they want to.

Here's the biggest difference. A lot of people go for some obscure degrees like "Art history" or they say "I have a passion in X" but there is no market in it. Sadly, if there is no demand for the job you won't get a job. Degree or not. If I told you, "I like painting very obscure pieces of art almost no one in the world would want." You're not going to get anywhere either.
Secondly, if you go for a degree thinking "I need a job" then you're doing it wrong. The idea of university is to learn, not to get job training. If I hear another person say "I learned how to do X in school yet my job wants me to do Y" you obviously failed your own education, because you looked at getting the "high grade for a GPA". You need to learn how to sell yourself in an interview/present yourself and how to explain that you learned something in school and you now know how to problem solve.
Literally every post secondary university that's a technical degree (You know the ones that actually hire people with degrees? Engineers.. accountants.. doctors.. yeah?) They actually need to know how to problem solve, in fact employers look at your degree as a sign that you're capable of problem solving (Based on the degree completion and what schools require you to learn).
Please do not get a higher education if you're ignorant and think "Hey. I can pass an exam, therefore I am smart" Post secondary is NOT your marks or your exams. Post secondary is about learning how to problem solve, and how to network and communicate.
Also, when it comes to paying off your student debt. Let me give you a nice big hint. STAY LOCAL. AS LOCAL AS YOU CAN. YOUR EMPLOYERS DO NOT GIVE A SHIT WHERE YOU GRADUATED FROM. My co-worker, finished an online degree, and is earning the same as me and is in the same position. He did not have to commute. Infact, he worked full-time to pay for his degree and he came out on top.
If you're one of these people who are like "Well you live once and I want to go to university and party/stay at a dorm" Then you're paying extra for that experience. Bravo. Spend that extra $30-40k on residence, that's no ones fault except your own choice. No one forces you to move.
Note: I understand some people live where there are no local post-secondary, if this is the case. Sorry. But if you work hard, you can get scholarships.
I graduated with no debt. I chose a local school. I only paid $40,000 over 4 years. Inb4 "Holy shiet $40,000?!" Well.. yes, I went to a cheaper school. I also worked part-time and 90% of my pay went to my tuition. Trust me, if you only work 15 hours a week at minimum wage. You can afford school. ($11 Min. wage here where I am.) If your min wage is different, increase work hours. I know people who work/study/sleep only. Just hustle harder, stop making excuses.

And this is why I went to college for 2 yrs & left when I realized I wasn't being taught anything practical & was going into severe debt. For job applications I've just lied & said I had a 4 yr degree at an obscure college that is no longer in business 😉. I'd say only 5% of jobs actually make you utilize knowledge taught in college (scientist, engineer, lawyer, doctor, etc...) & those are typically jobs that require post graduate studies.

the people who believe degrees dont help have used their education unknowingly. my sister has an mba is incredibly successful as a business woman, yet believes i should arbitrarily know exactly what she does and not go for the education in my career field that will fill in the blanks and expedite my climb. ive worked very hard to get to where i am and in order to move into the executive side, which im ignorant to, i need that education. for myself. not for status, but for basic fundamental knowledge of the business and management side of the leadership opportunities this industry has to offer someone of my motivational stature. if im wrong or im looking at this wrong then please correct me as i would rather not spend another 30k towards my higher education in a failed effort. especially if there are better options available to me.

It was some of the most depressing years of my entire life. Now i have several years of debt.

I paid $600 for books for 1 semester. I told the professor I was having problems with a project and couldn’t find it in the book, so I asked what chapter(s) we were using this time around. The professor told me it wasn’t in my overly expensive book. He said, “Google it.” So I wasted $600 on required books that were only used for a week or 2, and had to “Google it” for the remainder of the semester. The books and the professor taught me nothing.

I dont know how it works exactly in the US but here in europe 1) you pay less than that and you actually have professors that are also working in the industry so you get relly up to date and applied knowledge. TBH comparing Gates or Jobs with the common teen that needs planned guidance in order to get a proper understanding of a field is not very accurate. These guys were self tought, but they were just way too genius to be confined in a uni. I guess thats not the case for the average Joe though...BTW, the fact that there are online books and journals about medicine it does NOT mean you can beocme a doctor just by reading them :)

The big problem is the governments monopoly on education and higher education. We are squandering our wealth sending all these kids to school on government loans and they graduate with a mortgage but no house and no marketable skills..what we have to do is stop the government aid and then colleges will be forced to cut costs so that their students can afford to go..many of those students will then be able to work their way through college like the old days. The government subsidies benefit the educational establishment who can then charge more money, enriching themselves even more at the expense of the student who gets stuck with debt.
4 year college is a waste, you learn nothing useful and you chase girls and drink beer for 4 to 6 years. What we really need to do is learn skills, job related skills, and we need more on the job training.

College and universities are places of learning and not places of job guarantees. Yes, some jobs require learning which is incredibly hard to get without the resources provided at such places but a lot don't. I think individuals should really assess their reasons for college and ask if they are here to learn about something or be set for a job and if that is the best route for either.

I stopped the video in the middle.
There are some things that are true. There are people that never studies and are ridiculously successful. There are people that finished a master and they either don't work the thing that they studied for or even worse, they have a money problem. There is a ton of information on the web and in theory you don't need a university to get any knowledge.
The truth.1. If you don't have the regular practice of a particular branch, nobody is going to even read your resume. Imagine a doctor that haven't been practicing in a university for years. Staying on a PC and reading is not practice, it's sitting and reading.2. University is the totally opposite world of sitting at home and reading about rockets or biology. In a university you get to be introduced to all of the essentials of being a rocket scientist and a doctor. Also there are people that go to universities and seek people, they don't knock on doors and ask if you know anything about perpetual fuel or how nerves and muscles work together. They need to look at you every day visiting a class room for years and they get to know how capable let you are.
3.those people that you showed on the pictures. For example Bill Gates. Although he owns a stadium and buildings with offices all around the world. And although that you never saw his bank account balance...
How much is the population of planet Earth and how many people live successful lives without studying and how many of them live successful lives with a diploma?
If I had a company that has a lot of employees and there is a huge amount of money going though it every single day, I would never allow a person without a diploma on a position such as a manager, CEO, lawyer, team leader and so on.Hell I wouldn't even look at their application. He never proved that he is capable of managing this and the university is the only.place where you are allowed to prove yourself without risking something valuable.
Imagine a doctor. Would that doctor be allowed to do anything in a hospital without being proven that he is capable of managing this?
In a university, except little things like, the fact that he was getting up every single day in the morning visiting the class room and he was listening closely and studied (that proves that he has discipline)
He goes to practice under the control of somebody who can decide whenever he is capable or not.
Your videos are funny and I enjoy them but this one is out of place.

I totally agree with JP! I have a master's in Healthcare Administration but I am under-employed. The only thing required for my position is a high school diploma and a one semester certificate. Before I started my MS degree, I was told that upon graduation, I would make up to $75,000 a year. Of course, I wanted to enroll in their on-line MS degree! However, the one thing they left out during their sales pitch was that I also needed 1-5 years of experience in the job field in order to land a job in Healthcare Administration.
After graduating, I was confident that I could go out there wearing my degree as my badge of success and land a high-paying job that would fit my degree. However, time and time again, was disappointed when I was turned down because I lacked "experience". People 15 years younger than me were getting jobs in the field I wanted to work in because they had the experience and the degree. Thinking back on it now, I wish I never got my MS degree. Here I am engrossed in student loan debt but I don't even make enough to pay my student loans.
There's the problem. So what's the solution? Any ideas?

Went to college later in life, got a B.S. in engineering, and since I was a non-traditional student my state paid my tuition and a stipend which usually totaled over $1,000 a quarter. I literally made money going to school. Besides my mortgage, I have zero debt right out of college. That degree gave me two job offers shooting me from poverty income status to upper-middle-class income status before I even graduated. Tech degrees are for the vast majority of people who want financial independence without having to be Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Most startups fail miserably. You certainly don't need a degree to be successful, but certain types make it way easier, especially if you hail from a reputable university with connections to industry.

aren't they supposed to get their degrees at unis? isn't there a huge difference? 3 year education is looked down upon in my country, it is like saying you aren't smart enough to graduate a 4 year uni program

Jobs require degrees because they're not allowed to take an IQ test

Jon Sua yes you are right.. but it is an advantage. I start my life without any debt and then if someone want to (lots of people do it) leave the country and start fresh.

well... it's proven that IVY league graduates have on average a much higher salary than mid~low level universities and most "good" schools have good scholarship programs. And college does offer you much more than learning a major. being a university grad is NOT a must but it is true that most successful people are from the best schools

My brother has a masters degree in mechanical engineering. He was a substitute teacher for two years since he graduated and is now a librarian earning minimum wage and still lives with the rents because he's too lazy to get out there and find job in his line of studies. I have a high school diploma and work in the financial/corporate sector earning three times what he earns and live by myself in a spacious apartment. And I'm the failure in the family because I didn't go to uni and get myself into debt? Puulease.

Billy Bob Thornton He's got the good life now. Lives with the parents, earns minimum wage, pays very little rent, etc. He didn't go to uni of his own accord. Our father helped him to register and apply for his student grant. Otherwise he'd never done it on his own. He once admitted that he was going to uni to please and make our father proud. Little good it did him. And it's a waste of 4 years. I would be mighty pissed do all that hard work, to actually learn something I loved and knew could be applied in the world... to only end up earning minimum wage in a job anyone with common sense could do.

So your brother is too lazy to find a job in his field, but he wasn't too lazy to get a Master's in Mech-E??? Something doesn't compute.
