It's clear you're a real horror fan. Like you, I love the Halloween films and was extremely excited about this release. And after watching I was left with the same frustration you talked about. You've definitely gained a subscriber!
Whoa! After leaving my comment I took a look at other people's comments. What's with all the negativity? I get that this movie received mostly good reviews. But I think Chris is spot on in saying that those who loved this film probably aren't massive fans of the Halloween films, which is totally fine. Not every fan of a genre is going to love every franchise within that genre.
But in the era of social media it seems people are attacked whenever their opinion strays from the norm. Maybe that's the real horror.

Rob Zombie’s Halloween II: F- (Probably the worst horror movie of the 2000s)

Why on earth would you go into Halloween with high expectations? They are ALL cheesy slasher horror movies with a sprinkle of dark lore for added flavor but that's it Chris! It's in the same realm as Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th.

Mann, I just got outta Halloween and doubled back to this review. I gotta say, I am appalled at your rating! You completely undersold it! I... I think it's my favorite one. Sure, the dance thing led nowhere and there were obvious cliche's such as nonsensical character decisions. But this underwhelming review definitely elevated my experience, as I was expecting a C and walked out thinking B+ *at the very least* !

Simply put you cant recreate the original feel because its a different time. So we spend most of the movie trying to appeal to mass audiences and pay tribute to the original film constantly.

I completely agree. The comedy in this movie was meant to make it more "palatable" or what not, but it's shit. That whole sequence with the nanny and that little boy Julian... most people in the theater were hollering, but to me, it was plain disappointing.

I think youre overjudging the movie, like, the way I see it its more like: Michael is a guy that just enjoy killing, or at least its the only thing he knows. The Dr that studied Michael represents the audience expecting Michael to be more deep than just a guy that enjoy killing people. But thats what he is, a killer, he doesnt need a reason, he just kills everybody, in fact, all the thing about Laurie becoming the prey and the girl that Michael has to catch is a lie. Michael never looked for Laurie in any moment of the film, literally he just see her because they drive him to her and try to kill her.

  • Kenneth Masters
    Kenneth Masters 6 дней назад

Totally agree with you here bro. This movie sucked. I knew it wasn't going to be better than the original Halloween. But the hype was way too much and the kills were ass. They turned Michael Myers into a fucking action star. He should have just had a Liam Nelson mask on. I mean Myers carving cops into decapitated jack-o-lanterns? Corny af.
I really hope for the sequel they move the setting from Hadonfield and get rid of the whole Lorie Strode angle and make him just a stalking psychopath after some random people like in the first.
Totally agree Halloween 2 is better and I like H20 as an updated reboot sequel better.

Disagree, Chris. But I understand where you're coming from.
The one take you're talking about was in my opinion very suspenseful. And the comedy really worked for me, it brought me down intentionally, and then ramped up again. I thought there was a point to the characters. An estranged daughter who needs to come to terms with her mother, and a granddaughter that wishes to have a relationship with her grandmother and becomes scarred in the process. And Michael Myers is a force of evil, and he doesn't stop. Yeah, he's evil. Pure evil.

It's funny. This is exactly it : I came out of the theater thinking "yeah it was OK it was fun!". I enjoyed it for what it is. It has a lot of call backs to the original film. Sometimes the editing was weird, and I get the "unfocused" feel. The grand daughter and the boyfriend story line are like "what's the point" but I thought it was fun. Well shot, the music is great (as it is basically the same as Halloween) and it has spooky moments. So, yeah it's fiiiiine.

Chris, love your reviews. But I gotta disagree with you on this one (but that's ok we all have our own opinions right?). Whilst I do agree, there was some misplaced comedy, I felt it was needed to break up the movie a little bit (for example I cant even watch TCM (2003) again as it just seems like grey, depressing movie). I think the amount of screentime they have Laurie was enough, as this was a carrying on of the flame of sorts. Plainly speaking it's a Michael Myers film (just like the nightmare films are Freddy's and the friday13th movies are Jason's), so I think the film did a good job of cramming her current state and issues with family into the time it had. I think it did well at creating tense atmosphere (especially the mental hospital scene, the toilet scene, bus crash scene, motion sensor lights scene, final Laurie's house scene etc). I think you're looking at it too much from a fan point of view, than for what it is, probably the best slasher movie in years (since Friday 13th 2009). Say all you want about the Nightmare remake, that sucked. LoL. Not sure why everyone else is complaining about the halloween dance scene, it was literally in there for about 2 minutes, and they had to show some halloween type stuff happening on the night right?

I just watched the movie. Totally agree with Chris. Do not understand at all how this film was getting praise. It's not bad but it's super by-the-numbers and unoriginal. They had such a good formula going for it but they just turned it into another slasher. A descent time at the movies but it's far from a great film. I don't get how so many people are disagreeing with Chris in the comments. He's very right. I was really hoping the film was going to take a page out of You're Next's story and have a badass back and forth between Curtis' character and Michael Myers. Maybe in the second act, Michael almost gets killed but Laurie because she's spent literally 40 years preparing for this encounter, only for Michael to come back, crazier and more angry than ever, and the last act is a survival, showdown at Laurie's house. Instead, Laurie almost gets her ass handed to her twice. I know exactly what Chris is talking about here. Loads of missed opportunities in a generic Slasher that has some fun parts.

Fuck me, I agree Stuckman. It was better than many of the original sequels but that’s not really hard. It had few good scenes and some of the nods to the original were nice but this film though had few cool kills didn’t really scare me or build much suspense. Overated but no bad.

This movie gets an F from me. The worst horrormovie I've ever seen together with 'Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension'. The characters were absolutely stupid and boring (no character development AT ALL), the story was completly dull (not even a glimpse of creativity), the kills were totally lame and the atmosphere is so thin that I didn't really believed that this is a horrormovie but more of a parody of the first movie. Bad, bad, bad. The worst!

  • Randy Spears
    Randy Spears 11 дней назад

I'm sort of surprised at the expectation that people brought into this movie. It is a sequel to a B-Horror movie. They weren't making the sequel to Schindler's List or Memento.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of the original '78 version, but I sort of know that when I enter one of these movies, I need to lower my critical thinking skills down a couple notches.
That said, I really enjoyed this movie. Yes, there are problems such as the introduction of the crazy doctor, the inclusion of the podcasting team and their quick demise, and the fact that Lori sets up a complex trap for Michael and then doesn't stay around to confirm his death.
I still think the script elevated the genre and I, for one, didn't mind some of the character bits (e.g. the peanut better sandwich banter between the cops) because they humanized the characters and made us care about them other than the "two cops designated to die horrible deaths."
    My suggestion: Lower your Expectations

I agree with Chris on this one. I saw Halloween recently and it was a major disappointment. It was just typical jump scare bullshit (not even good ones) with a few slightly satisfying moments. It brought nothing new to the slasher genre, and more generally the horror genre. I guess it did a few new things in the Halloween franchise but nothing spectacular or transformative.
The movie was also, like Chris said, completely lacking of atmosphere. Mild spoiler: After Michael escapes it immediately transitions to Halloween night with kids trick r treating, no build up, no suspense, no Halloween atmosphere like in the original. It was just bland and forced like they just needed to keep the plot moving but didn’t really care. The original built atmosphere with Michael stalking around the neighborhood during the day and showing the characters doing stuff as the day gradually approached nighttime. It did a great job at building the atmosphere of Halloween. This movie was totally lacking in that.
Was it scary? Not in the least bit. The movie diffused all of its tension as soon as Michael appeared on screen. There was one scene in the third act that had some suspense but again, soon as Michael shows up its diffused and we’re back to typical ineffective slasher tropes, lame.
Overall this movie was a huge disappointment. I didn’t expect to be scared going into it but I did expect something new to the franchise/genre and was severely let down. I’d give it a D

The original Halloween is a classic for a reason. By far my favorite horror movie is the original Halloween, it isn't even close. I think what made that 1978 film so good was that it was something new, it was psychological and it felt like you were in the movie with the other characters and that this guy was truly a dangerous murderer.

  • Saskia Lawler
Saskia Lawler 11 дней назад +2

I agree almost completely with your review Chris. This movie couldn't quite decide what it wanted to be. There was faaaarrr too much packed in there. There was no slow build of suspense, which is what made the first movie work so well, and stand the test of time. I mean yeah, the original had some comedy (Lynda with her "totally"s, the light hearted dialogue between the girls) but overall, the tone of the original was one of complete dread from the beginning (to me anyway). I think this movie wanted to throw in a bit of Judd Apatow-style humour, and so many nods to the original and the sequels that it basically lost it's identity in the process. It *almost* felt like RZ type humour too t times. Not as extreme, but not far off it. I wanted pure John Carpenter style. There were parts I loved, like the music when Allyson is being chased after the dance, and I loved the babysitter scene with the kid (who was really funny), but I still feel like it was very rushed and very convoluted in parts. Nothing got to develop into its full potential. I think in the end what was lacking for me was suspense and most of all, fear, real fear and dread. It felt like they had made a list of boxes to tick to please different groups like older fans, new fans, nerdy diehard fans who notice everything (that would be me), younger audience who they thought would want more comedy..etc etc. Also, the ending. It was so abrupt I could hardly take it in. I too turned to my friend open-mouthed like "is that it"? It just didn't scare me, and the original still does and probably always will.

The attempt at humor fell flat. I could go on...Chris is right with a lot of his comments except I thought JLC sucked.
