One flame is green because it's running through a copper fitting. Or there's a fragment of copper in the mechanism in the torch where the flame passes through.

Yes. Salt causes iron to oxidize at a MUCH higher rate. This is why seawater (salt water) erodes ship hulls faster than fresh water. Molten salts tend to react EXPONENTIALLY faster. So yes, your steel cup was being rusted away at a hyper fast rate. Basically. It is more complex than that, but technically correct. :-P

Magnesium sulfate is used for furnace linings! When pouring it into sand mold, most likely you formed eutectic which has lower melting point then parent substance.

    • R they Fishing
      R they Fishing Month ago

furnace linings can be made of MgO (magnesium oxide), Magnesium Sulphate under high temperatures in a furnace will chemically react to make MgO.

A word of caution... don't allow molten ANYTHING to come in contact with water, even damp sand. It can cause the water to flash to steam and blow the molten "whatever" "all over". I have scars on my face from pouring lead into a large sinker mold I had cooled in water but failed to let evaporate dry. Damp casting sand and molten metal will wake the neighbors... trust me. That may have been what caused your improvised mold to fail. I enjoy you videos. Have fun.
