The country is in turmoil, and it can easily be argued that the establishment of both parties got us here. But under President Trump, does America stand a fighting chance of coming back from the brink? Tucker Carlson and Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks sit down to determine how we got here and if there’s any saving us!

+Smo Cloud wow. did you break out your dictionary for that? I didn't need anything to fit any preconceived narrative that I did or did not have. your calling me an idiot because I " presupposed to know someone's brain just cause they said some words with it" is quite possibly one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. I was ( I guess mistakenly) under the impression that that's what words were for, to put into a comprehensive format your thoughts. obviously this is a fruitless discussion, try not to use your words to translate your thoughts too much, you might find yourself very much out of your depth.

      Smo Cloud 4 days ago

dne wilson sorry, I’m afraid you think I’m someone I’m not, projecting your pre-conceived notion that I’m somehow a Carlson fan when I can’t stand the guy, he’s a bumbling buffoon who cannot utilize any mode of argument beyond a strawman, and I only made an objective analysis that the crowd reacts more strongly to tucker than cenk even though I think cenk had better arguments because tucker is better at playing off a crowd, hence the “winning the crowd” argument. I never implied that meant he was winning the ARGUMENT, nor did it imply the crowd was somehow the decider for my individual opinion. I’m sorry you can’t think objectively and it either has to fit your narrative or it’s entirely against it, as if there was never such a thing as a grey area. Get out of here idiot. Don’t ever presume to know someone’s brain just cause they said some words with it and you formed an opinion on those words, as if such a tertiary exposure to someone’s mind could ever even hope to give you an inkling if its workings. Your strawman is as weak as Tucker’s.

great debate. the real break on liberal and conservatives is how to repair corrupt govt. how do you DRAIN THE SWAMP so to speak. how do we TAKE BACK POWER from these mega corporations that control our politicians.
most liberals will argue....."well, it's simple to fix the problem. you write legislation and you appoint judges that will help strip power from these mega corporations and give it back to the people. the problem with this strategy (I call it the elizabeth warren strategy) is the power isn't given back to the people but it's given back to the federal govt. but to democrats the govt and the people are one in the same. so if the govt has all the power, then the people have all the power. it's a proven fact throughout history that the bigger and more powerful and more money a govt spends, the higher likelihood govt officials will get BOUGHT OFF by big corporations quite often as the expense of everyday citizens. so what is the real solution to giving the power back to the people? one option is to STRIP the federal govt of it's power. if the govt has little to no power, they can't get bought off.

This video brings out probably the biggest problem with political discourse. 30 minutes of this 58 minute "debate" was spent talking about what is realistically a primarily NON ISSUE to 99% of Americans such as immigration. The ENTIRE debate should have been spent discussing issues that ACTUALLY ARE important, such as healthcare , climate change and inequality.

Immigration: keep it strong and organized, but loose and distorted
Healthcare: Affordable but not universally free due to massive costs
Climate Change: same shit as global warming (no solutions)
      Inequality: too broad cannot fix

    • João Oliveira
João Oliveira 12 days ago +2

Dude I’m a progressive but that’s a dumbass take. Even though illegal immigration does not affect you, it should concern you since it’s one of the things that defines what our country is all about. And it affects the communities that receives those immigrants which ultimately affect the overall economy. If we started throwing out issues off the window because they don’t directly affect you, then we would be screwed since many people aren’t going to be affected by climate change. We have to debate the controversial issues, not the ones that affect you personally.

Why is being human not common enough to unify us? Tucker is off the reservation on this. I think he caught himself saying something stupid. If an alien life form were to attack earth, and we as Americans find ourselves in Mexico or Japan, would language prevent us from unifying and fighting against these aliens? The bonds we share as humans are much stronger than any one language.

Europe was not as united as it is now in the past. Germans, Spanish, French, British, Russians fought long bloody wars for centuries, but they’re now (with the exception of the Russian because of politics) brotherly nations that are connected more than ever before. It takes time to completely get out of the imperialist/feudal stage of humanity that we found ourselves in but it will happen.

    • Sams Son
Sams Son 13 days ago +1

+Tim I don't think you understand what I'm saying, but that also proves my point. That we speak the same language but still have disagreements just goes to show that language is just a tool for communication. What unifies us are things like purpose, common goals, proximity. And, since we are separated by time and space, we might not always share one of these. But, the one thing that we'll always have in common is being human. That is the unbreakable bond we share.

Just from my perspective as a South African, having Tucker mention this country in terms of Xenophobic issues and then proceeding to talk about a country's population needing to have key similarities to unify them, the most obvious being language "or else why would you be a country?", is interesting to me considering the fact that South Africa currently has over 12 official languages and even more informal languages than I can name. There are very few South Africans who can even name every official language, let alone who can speak all or even a fraction of them. And while SA is not by any means a unified country, we seem to get through despite not having Tucker's example of a *key* unifier.

    • Airportris
      Airportris 10 days ago

Lol not true it's leftist policies and these liberal companies like Facebook and Twitter that are against free speech. I dont hear republicans trying to restrict free speech. I see sjws who are worried about people's feelings and safe spaces as the biggest danger to free speech and the co

    • Claudeus Gothicus
      Claudeus Gothicus 16 days ago

while that is an issue it's a separate issue that is far less important than the current trend towards shutting down free speech.. although Cenk didn't actually explain what limit's he thought were acceptable (something I would really like to know BTW) Carlson I believe hit the nail on the head as far as free speech being the single most important thing there is.. Canada has enacted new laws governing free speech, and it's coming our way.. I don't think Cenk actually understands the dangers currently surrounding free speech, nor just how critical free speech is to our society.. I say this because his comment about Kaepernick to Carlson shows he's actually misconstruing the entire issue..

Interesting debate until about halfway through. Both had their own fair points, but saying that we have to be unified culturally doesn't really roll with me. Zombeaver with nearly two million Hispanic illegal immigrants a year coming into this country they have no motivation whatsoever to assimilate into our culture. they take over neighborhoods have their own retail stores never have to learn our language, take over whole trades in the construction industry causing Americans to have to learn Spanish if they want to work in the construction industry. I don't know where you live or what you do for a living but massive latino immigration is a threat for blue-collar Americans. just look to Europe for an example of what massive immigration does to any nation's culture.

I think Tucker explained it very well: A government is there to enforce its citizens' beliefs and ideals. Citizens should help the caravan, not by use of government, but by use of their own money and services and not finances afforded to the Government by every citizen. There must be a clear distinction between Governmental finances - which is everyone's money - and peoples' wealth and services they can willingly provide somebody in need.
I dislike the premise, but it's a fundamental truth we need to uphold: People are allowed to be selfish.

When Tucker mentioned the plateau of pay, what he doesn’t understand is the global economy. 30-40 years ago, America made a lot of what it consumes. Our wages haven’t plateaued because of competing with the immigrants, they’ve plateaued because we’re competing with other countries. Asia's, Indonesia's, South America’s wages are significantly lower. Competing with them to make American companies's goods is a loosing proposition since they aren’t given the same benefits that we enjoy.

It's not right to have undocumented immigrants be second-class citizens. We don't have this in Canada and somehow we manage to walk our dogs ourselves. Also people can enjoy other cultures and live together you don't have to split apart.

    • LT T
      LT T 29 days ago +1

Kim, let’s be clear. Number one, they are not citizens and therefore cannot be “second class “. They are undocumented and primarily illegal. I am a liberal. Not a bleeding heart liberal but I definitely lean left but that does not mean that I am not for illegal activities . I think the spirit of your statement is treating people with respect. I share your enthusiasm around that. But as a practical matter, I know for a fact due to the reality that I am in construction management that people are not always “asylum seekers”. There are many undocumented workers in the construction industry who are here as asylum-seekers but in reality they’re simply here to earn money of which they send most back to Mexico. Respecting people is important. All people! Unfortunately, this country cannot take the 2000,000,000 poverty-stricken people in the world or our country will fail miserably. We are in a position to subsidize and assist Mexico but on their grounds and for those people who come here, they must be legal and go through the process or else they just can’t come. No that’s not mean, it is real. I have a two bedroom home. I cannot have 13 people in my home nor can I feed those 13 people on the income that I have. So in closing, think of the United States is a house with X number of bedrooms and the maximum occupancy rate of four people. We cannot put 13 people in this house though it would be humane to on a temporary basis allow one or two extra until which time we have more bedrooms to offer that can be maintained economically and through our social and infrastructure systems. My position is practical, taking into consideration all personsz.

He pretends to validate the concerns of others with a dismissive "I guess" so he can push it aside and get to what he really wants to rant about.
