Aladdin is a 2019 American musical fantasy film directed by Guy Ritchie, who co-wrote the screenplay with John August. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1992 animated film of the same name, which was based on the eponymous folktale from One Thousand and One Nights. The film stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen.

I didn't expect much going into it but was pleasantly surprised that it was really good. Only disappointment I had was there was no "10,000 years can give such a crick in the neck!" line.

Am I the only person who liked the Prince Ali song number? Which I guess is odd considering overall I didn't like the movie...

As for the style thing, they were speeding up the footage which I think was done either because Guy Ritchie does kind of like playing around with fast and slow motion, or because it was the only way they could do longer takes while still keeping the action in rhythm with the music, in other words, bad choreography.

I like your review! I thoroughly enjoyed the film as well! It made me feel like a kid again. This coming from a hardcore fan of the original 1992 Disney film. It was my favorite Disney film for 26 years!
It’s not bad to like something whether it’s a remake or not. People are blinded by nostalgia and refuse to have an open mind. I’m glad to see you aren’t one of those people :)

I think Will Smith humanized the genie in a way that really added to the character. Robin Williams Genie definitely had his vulnerable moments, and those moments were done well, but he could've been Aladdin's imaginary friend for all intents and purposes. Smith-Genie felt more like a person in the world.

For the opening number they kinda sped up the movement but it was a stylistic choice to pay omage to India films that were known for doing that a lot

I wasn't planning on seeing this movie, but for some reason, I've felt really sad that it isn't getting good reviews. I'm glad to hear someone had fun with it. I've been told my taste in movies is bad, so maybe I would enjoy it, too! I LOVE listening to the remake's soundtrack.

Didn't you know that this movie was the first live-action Disney remake to be shot in Australia? Part of that is because it's Disney's first co-production under their new deal with the Australian company Village Roadshow Pictures.

I actually didn’t mind Will Smith....much. He sucked whenever it felt like he was trying to improv, because he just doesn’t have the energy. BUT he did do a great job (along with the CGI artists) in Friend Like Me. That said, everyone else had no energy. I was especially disappointed with the first scene with Aladdin running from the guards, which I thought would be the easiest to do. Assassin’s Creed movie or youtubers are more fun to watch for chase scenes. The best parts of the movie were when it felt like a Bollywood film, but that was only two scenes of the film. It’s fine if someone liked the film, but it just reminded me of a slightly better version of the Beauty and the Beast remake: the parts it mimicked were too lackluster, and the parts it added didn’t seem to fit with the story they were telling. I’d almost rather them just go for a completely different version of the movie. Maybe something more tragic?

Yaaay, I really enjoyed it too. Aside from a few bizarrely low-energy scenes and that cringe-inducing dance party at the middle, I thought it gave a unique spin to the story. Unlike the other Disney remakes, I think it has more than enough of an identity to warrant it's own existence. Plus, evil cunning parrot Iago is straight-up BETTER than constantly shouting and annoying Gilbert Godfrey Iago.

I really loved Naomi Scott's portrayal of Jasmine. She was wonderful in this role and unlike Emma Watson can genuinely act and sing as well as dance fantastically. However, what I noticed in this live action is how they mellowed down the original character of Jasmine. Yes, she is strong and yes, she has a new power song 'Speechless' and yes, she becomes the Sultan in the end...but there was still something missing. Original Jasmine was, first of all, never speechless. Her sassy, free-spirited, and outspoken character is very mellowed down here. The live action Jasmine quietly cowers in fear or intimidation when Jafar tries to degrade her by saying she is more beautiful when quiet. Something that the original Jasmine never did. She constantly talked back to everyone as well as Jafar and stated her opinions without regret. She was the one who intimidated Jafar by saying that she'd get rid of him as soon as she'd become a Queen. Also, can we talk about how she did not even jump when Aladdin told her to? The live action Jasmine hesitated (which is realistic), but again...very unlike the original, spirited, feminist Jasmine, who confidently leaped on her own accord without needing Aladdin's help or assistance. Then of course, the meeting with Prince Ali was also way toned down and Jasmine was once again made softer. First of all, I cannot imagine original Jasmine listening to Ali's bubbling about 'buying' her and not getting super pissed about it. Remember that "how dare you ? I am not a prize to be won!" scene? That girl had some serious guts. This Jasmine just allows Prince Ali to continue embarrassing her, blurt out that she is for sale, and she doesn't even get half mad. Yes, she rolls her eyes...yes, she leaves with some lame excuse about a bread. But she does not stand up for herself and defend herself like the original did. If there wasn't any plot about wanting to be Sultan, honestly, new Jasmine would have been a very unfeminist character. Even when she finds out that Ali is actually the boy from the market...even that scene is mellowed down. In the end, I do understand that things need to be different but I kinda wish they stuck to that feisty, fearless, outspoken character that never was speechless in the first place. She constantly voiced her opinions and stood up for herself. Whether people listened to her or not is a different question. But I guess they REALLY wanted to use this Speechless song. This is not a diss on anyone. I really enjoyed this movie as well as characters. But I couldn't help notice these differences.

Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie, and I liked this one just as much as the original. Because brought its own stuff to the table, like the scene where Aladdin snuck in to give Jasmine her bracelet back, and Jasmine’s song. And yeah the genie wasn’t Robin Williams, but he wasn’t in the broadway show either and people still love it, and Will Smith was a good Genie. He made this version of the genie his own. And the choreography was great! And the animals looked great, I loved the look on Abu’s face when he saw the ruby. There is so much more I could talk about but I’ll spare you

I noticed the weird camera work as well. I have a feeling that they shot a lot of the music numbers at half-speed the way they do with music videos and then in trying to speed it up didn't match it up properly. And maybe they did that on purpose for stylistic reasons but to me it just looked like they kept speeding it up and slowing it down too much compared to the music.

I'm surprised that you love this film and not many people do, it's great to find someone who is optimistic for once. I think the bad reputation people are giving to these remakes is undeserving because some people would probably want to these animated classics in a different format and with something different in them and other feel like there's no need for it but in a age where originality is becoming difficult to figure out since we done all that we can or more than we can think of we don't really have anything is keep that success streak going. I just want people to be more open minded and not keep a feeling of cynicism and grumpiness that we find it hard to communicate with each other

OMG like why giving this movie that much hate?? This movie still gives me a HUGE energy and although it's a bit different vibe from the original one, i feel like disney just wanted to adjust of what the 'Aladdin' movie's gonna be to be shown in 2019 by still keeping the magical moves from the cartoon yet modernize each character. I don't see your point and it just seemed like you're being too biased with the original one. Sure the animated aladdin is irreplacable, but neither do the live action.

Im in the center of opinons. While i do think its a fun film and the music is a blast, I also agree with Doug that the actors wanted to give more and were told to hold back. I saw NC's review of Mary Poppins Return (btw Tamara killed it as Mary) and he says something very true. He and many of us don't hate change we hate lazziness. We want these movies to be good. We see them hoping for something amazing but are left feeling Disney doesnt care. And as he said also in the review, "money is nothing without caring."
It was fun but could of been so much more. People may hate on Doug for feeling that way but hes right.

With the Keanu Reeves resurgencefrom the John Wick films, You should go back into his catalog (revisiting sports movies) and react/review to "The Replacements" (2000) and the not quite as good, but more emotional, "Hardball" (2001).
I feel You shan't be disappointed.

In The Replacements, he did a very "Keanu" thing, and gave up a portion of his wages so they could afford to hire Gene Hackman for the movie.

(movie has been near the top of my top 10 faves since it came out)
