Public (School) Enemy No. 1: Billionaire Betsy DeVos, Trump’s Pick for Education Secretary

  • Published on Dec 1, 2016
  • - Donald Trump has tapped conservative billionaire Betsy DeVos to serve as Education Secretary. DeVos is the former chair of the Michigan Republican Party and a longtime backer of charter schools and vouchers for private and religious schools. In response, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said, "In nominating DeVos Trump makes it loud and clear that his education policy will focus on privatizing, defunding and destroying public education in America." Since 1970, the DeVos family has invested at least $200 million in various right-wing causes. DeVos’s father-in-law is the co-founder of Amway and her brother is Erik Prince, founder of the mercenary firm Blackwater. For more, we speak to former Assistant Secretary of Education Diane Ravitch, Center for Media and Democracy executive director Lisa Graves, and elected member of the Detroit Board of Education Tawanna Simpson.

The truth is that public schools have failed America in the past 20 years because in their very nature they exclude parents choice and are filled with government burocracy and politicians as board members! So the reason why this panelists are against charter schools is because they are supporters of the corrupt teacher unions who only care about the interest of the teachers and very little on the interest of the the students or children. This unions will defend incompetent teachers to the very end because their true interest is the union fee they get from the teacher salary slip! This unions don't lose sleep at all about the welfare of the students in this public schools and the public school boards are filled with union funded politicians that are only there to maintain and enable the old order. They never even care about parents concerns because they get their pay cheque from the government and the only way this public teachers will listen to their concerns is if the parents control their pay cheques.

@14:40 Hypersegregation in private schools? citation needed. Ccsa states something very different:
Also define the difference between "segregation" and "hypersegregation".
Furthermore on the point before "hypersegregation". Private schools in Chile perform better than public schools. Source:
I can't find anything on the private school *quality* in Sweden. Maybe I missed it. Some proof of those statements would be appreciated.

Focus on the Family actually seems more interested in talking about things like marriage, family, parenting, life challenges (like: coping with loss, disaster, tragedies etc.) than about gay rights. Sure, sometimes they mention "gay conversion therapy", but that isn't their main goal by a long shot. That's unfair representation. It's like saying Hitler wasn't that bad because he built lots of roads and other infrastructure. Which is just a really bad argument.

*Are charter schools run by for-profit corporations?*
The vast majority of charter schools are operated by non-profit public benefit corporations. Many others are unincorporated, but governed by their school districts. To CCSA's knowledge, for profit charter schools represent less than 1% of charter schools in California. Out of almost 1,200 charter schools in the state, there are only six (6) charter schools that are organized as limited liability corporations. Regardless of how they are structured, they are subject to the laws governing all charter schools. Charters schools are public schools that must be non-sectarian, tuition-free and open to any student who wishes to attend. Their fiscal operations and compliance are overseen by their public entity authorizer.

The statement regarding application of kids with disabilities to charter schools is wrong. As public schools, charter schools are required to enroll and serve students with disabilities in the same manner as traditional public schools and in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws. In fact, because charter schools have more flexibility than traditional public schools, they are designed to offer innovative educational strategies and provide individualized support to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities and other unique challenges. In order to support students with special needs, charter schools will often tailor their educational program or create specialized programs.

This report is complete bs. Devos supports a voucher system. That doesn't mean all vouchers will go to private schools, some public schools do a good job and the parents recognize it, and they will continue to support those schools using their vouchers. We spend billions as taxpayers on these failing public schools, why not divide that money up and give it to the parents to choose where the money goes. With that kind of money floating around there would be a revolution of new schools popping up all across the country. Better teachers and more innovative schools would be a direct result from the competition. What about the parents who want to home school, all of those expenses comes from their pockets why not subsidize them with vouchers? America is ranked 40th in math right now, we spend more money then we ever have on our education system and it continues to decline, it is broken. A lot of teachers are not that good, they keep their job because the unions protect it, while our kids suffer. If the parents had the right to choose the school with better teachers the schools with bad teachers will close. The idea is simple and brilliant. The time to do something is now, I hope Devos can implement this despite all of the media lies. I think the left wing media is quick to protect these failing public schools because these schools indoctrinate students into a liberal point of view, almost every kid that comes out of high school is a left leaning idiot, only until they experience the real world for about ten years they become conservative.

The simple truth is that public schools in the US have been progressively worsening over the decades. Costs have exponentially increased while results have remained stagnant or even dropped in many cases. This discussion is typical of most leftist representations of an issue. You have a bunch of like-minded woefully misinformed anti-free market, anti-free choice fools sitting around trading the same old platitudes and talking points, never really addressing or defending against any of the well-founded arguments. They are happy patting each other on the back and remaining in their insulated bubble of mindless conformity and are scared to death of ever having to actually defend their positions with facts, much less a true comparison of the proven failures of leftist policies with the proven success of conservative and free-market approaches. I always know what to expect from Democracy Now but keep coming back from time to time to see if there is any light at the end of the tunnel of darkness along which they constantly stumble. Nice to see that they haven't disappointed yet again.

    Democracy is unconstitutional!
Article 4 Section 4 of the United States Constitution
States; "The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a
"Republican" form of government, and shall protect each of them
against invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive
(when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence.
The Republican form of government is a representative
form of government and not a democracy. The majority of the people do not rule
directly, they are represented and so are the minority. Representatives must
represent all the people in their district, not just the people who voted for
“Democracy is the worst form of government except for all
those others that have been tried.” ~Winston Churchill
    I disagree with Churchill.
Democracy is not “the worst form of government except for
all those others that have been tried.” Democracy is the worst form of
government ever tried, period. Democracy ranks among the gravest threats to
"individual rights and individual liberty" in human history. That is
why our wise founders gave us a "Republican" form of government. Read
the constitution if you are able to read. Republicans are right; democrats are
    wrong and illegal criminals!
The reason that Barack Obama believes he has the
Authority to bypass congress is because of democracy's notion that the majority
rule is absolute. And because he was elected by a majority of the people, that
gives him a mandate of the people, to carry out the agenda he ran on. Democrats
believe that the will of the majority is the law of the land and supersedes the
Constitution of the United States and trumps the Bill of rights.
Democrats lack wisdom and need guidance from the true
patriot Republicans, such as the Tea Party. But democrats have repeatedly
demonstrated their inability to understand the concepts of a representative
form of government, that is characterized by the free market economy and
Judeo-Christian laws. Democrats keep trying the same thing over and over again
hoping for different results and in spite of all the evidence to the contrary,
they believe they are right. How delusional can you be?

Charter schools are free for families, in Miami most charter schools are amazing. A lot of religious families want their children to attend religious schools however cannot afford them so the kids are forced to attend a secular school. I like options for families across the board. That is not necessary true charter schools do take students with numerous disabilities and needs. Along with students that are doing well. The best thing about charter schools teachers can get fired for NOT doing their jobs! Public schools if you are a teacher can sit and read the newspaper daily never teach and nothing happens to you. Not all teachers but A LOT of them do nothing! Kids walking around just a mess ! public schools aren't the good or bad guys here they are just out of touch ! They need to stay out of politics focus of teaching and learning and work harder to attract parents and students. I wouldn't send my own child to one even if it's "one of the better ones" and if I do I would be on campus daily even volunteering to make sure things were happening for my children

    • arthurjeremypearson
      arthurjeremypearson 2 years ago

__"Public schools if you are a teacher can sit and read the newspaper daily never teach and nothing happens to you"__
If that is a fact, you need to back that up with robust analysis and surveys. If it is not a fact, you are making a slur, and making your side look desperate and paranoid for making an unfounded claim. Please provide citations when making damning claims like that. Thank you.
Studies I know I can cite show:
      1 Public schools do OK.
      2 Private schools do better.
3 Religious schools do not do better. (there is a negative correlation. That does NOT show religious schools do WORSE, just that they don't do BETTER.)
Ergo, Private religious schools do better because they're private, not because they're religious.
Charter religious schools are not private, and therefore do not necessarily do better, and therefore do no better than public schools.
Also, with the internet, "schools in general" might become irrelevant, and your "private religious" school might NOT shield your child from any perceived "evils" of secular education.

The following is just a glimpse of the failures of the charter school system that Betsy DeVos has created in Michigan.
*Wasteful spending and double-dipping. Board members, school founders and employees steering lucrative deals to themselves or insiders. Schools allowed to operate for years despite poor academic records. No state standards for who operates charter schools or how to oversee them.*
*And a record number of charter schools run by for-profit companies that rake in taxpayer money and refuse to detail how they spend it, saying they’re private and not subject to disclosure laws. Michigan leads the nation in schools run by for-profits.*

  • J Cullison

So im hearing that charter schools kick out dumb kids, don't accept troubled kids and pad their test scores. Then it would stand to reason that charter schools should have pretty high test scores and ranked pretty high. Unless non of that is true and they do take in the dumb kids and troubled kids like originally thought and then it also should be no surprise that their testing scores would be lower then the smarter more agile kids in public schools. I love destroying liberal logic.

Choice/Competition: Competition if fair, is good. However, not all fields are made for competition. Education and Healthcare are two such fields. The problem with school choice competition is that is not fair, charters have a huge advantage over public. The advantage is so much that in time charters will wipe out public, leaving only charter. WELL THATS GOOD RIGHT, THEY CAN COMPETE WITH ONE ANOTHER. Yes they will compete, but not in EDUCATING STUDENTS. They will compete in who can Run an education system the cheapest. Meaning cheaper food, cheaper teachers, less activities, higher game ticket prices, shorter school years and less learning materials, less field trips and so on and so forth. This will go on and on until schools will be held in public parks under large FEMA tents with 50 students in one class to cut cost. Greed has no bounds. And allowing the greediest among us to get money up front to educate our kids for profit. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG.

one empty. Then you take water from the one that's full to fill the other
bucket. Then people are amazed that you no longer have a full bucket, you
have 2 half empty buckets. The charter school bucket has a valve in the
bottom, and that valve can be opened at anytime for any reason with no

Our public schools are in horrible shape and we spend a lot of money on them... The USA ranks very low on the world stage and the money we spend is at the top!
Detroit spends WELL OVER $10, 000 dollar per student.
The Charter schools are NOT selecting students. Parents select alternatives to public schools.
We need school choice and parents can choose small private schools, large corporate run schools, or public schools.

Here's a cold hard truth about public education. The fallacy that the unions make is that charter schools "drain resources" from Public schools. Ok first, charters are public. But this even assumes that the public education funds are somehow OWED to the district schools to begin with. Public education means that public education is fully funded. The $ follows the children, so that's what counts, the brick-and-mortar district schools do not have an inherent right to exist.

Unions are a Republican form of governance. They are voted in by a majority and have a representative form of structure. "Private" schools? You mean private clubs. Who will regulate who makes what at "private" schools? The top administrators will take the lion share of MY MONEY (tax dollars) a pay their pals good salaries, while Teachers and Para Professionals will take a pittance. And if they don't like it? They can quit. They have NO rights at work.
Vouchers are Tax Dollars don't neglect this fact. Yet tax payers will never have the ability of being able to have a voice in how they are managed. DeVos is not quite as honest about all this as she should be. But that isn't reality a surprise.
Right To Work, as can be seen in Wisconsin and what Gov. Walker implemented, isn't about allowing people to join a Union or not, but it is ALL about crushing Unions for the betterment of the rich and powerful. And that this guy (Walker) claims to be a man of faith is all the more disgusting as to what he has done to Unions in Wisconsin. RTW is dishonesty hidden by slick corporate advertising. RTW only helps the rich and powerful. And that is about as morally sound as stoning Stephen.
The Unions' "last in first out" structure - as mocked by Ms. Friedrichs in her video- is called Seniority. It is absolutely fairness personified. As a person gives their life, heart, sweat and blood year after year after year to their job, they EARN the right to be classified as more valuable then a newcomer.
In a "private school" as Teachers become part of an aging workforce, OUT THEY GO . . . because they will be a financial drain on the bottom line of a "business." I'm no socialist (attention Dennis Prager) but society should look out for dedicated employees everywhere. Pass laws about seniority rights and Just Cause rights if you anti-union proponents have any honesty in your blood.
Also, you don't have favoritism and cronyism driving who gets hired in public schools as there are regulations to watch out for this. How many people will NOT be hired in a "private school" because they don't fit the clique of the top echelon of the "private school." School Vouchers are TAX DOLLARS. But I won't be able to do anything about how some "Private school" does anything with my money. If Ms. Friedrichs thinks that public schools have problems, she should stop drinking the Kool-Aid from RTW Corporate Law firms and start thinking for herself.
Privatization means corruption and pitiless business practices. And even worse! Baptist children to Baptist schools, Lions Club children to Lions Club Schools, etc.,etc. etc.. Privatization is a very bad answer to the use of tax dollars. And again, Vouchers are Tax Dollars.
There are no checks and balances. Who's kidding who? A non-filthy rich family cannot just "shop around" for a new school as travel costs is NOT part of the voucher system. They'll be stuck in Crony School after Crony School.
Ms. Friedrichs and her co-plaintiffs in the "Friedrichs lawsuit" would have been better off forcing change in the Union instead of getting in bed with the powerful forces of the 21st Century Feudal Lord system. The overlord system being brought into reality by Conservative Republicans and corporate business execs that care about as much for the non-wealthy as they do a stray dog on the road that just barely escaped the wheels of their BMW's is truly this present darkness.
What we need is Unions for the 21st Century, NOT a repeat of history by having the pitiless rich and powerful ruling us all once again. The Rich and Powerful hate Unions. That should tell anyone that still has the capability of thinking and acting morally sound, that unions are a good thing.
And what is most disgusting is that so many people claim to be people of faith that are driving this anti-Union crusade. How anyone can claim to be connected to a caring deity and sellout fellow employees to the rich and powerful and "The Boss" obviously are making Judas Iscariot look like a successful role model.
For disclosure sake: I am a Conservative Republican, a "bible-believing Christian" and I have gone from being typically anti-union (you know like I was taught), to working for a "unionized company" and then learning full well what goodness a Union job brings to each person . . . to becoming a union Steward . . . and to now working for a Union. I just still have the ability to see right from wrong. Agreeing with someone that has a correct point of view, doesn't make me them, it just makes me honest.
What DeVos and Friedrichs-style anti-unionism is bringing to society is darkness that humanity has suffered through before. But then again forgetting history means a repeat of its worst records. And the newly minted Friedrichs-styled cases waiting in the wings are setting the stage for a malevolence that will dwarf the horrors that made "The Labor Movement" of the early 20th century.
"I can hire one half of the working class to kill the other half." - Jay Gould - US financier and Railroad businessman.

Are you fucking kidding me? Have you seen any of the confirmation hearings? It was worse than a bloody slaughter. DeVOS has NO QUALIFICATION or EXPERIENCE to serve as the Sec. of EDUCATION. Her only qualification in acquiring the nomination was her $$$ contributions to the RNC. THAT is NEPOTISM.

The public schools in the US are a joke! Especially in Detroit! This is an attack on Betsy DeVos, in-order to try discrediting and dismantling Trumps choice.

Is it true that a majority of public school teachers with access to choice prefer choice for their own children?

Devos, a woman of limited intellectual abilities and a lunatic vision paid more than two-hundred million dollars to Trump (campaign) for her appointment. Bernie, Elizabeth, Tim, Al, rest assured that her well-healed religiously fundamentalist zeal amply fuels her dedication to her mission to use her bought-and-paid-for position to destroy our democratically born and equality-nurtured American system of education. Still, unlike the CEOs appointed with her, she's not out to enrich herself, her family or the Trumps; she already did that. She just wants to brainwash our children with privately written and presented unscientific, unhistorical and unnatural educational garbage.

Betsy Devos is unqualified for this position. Just because her family has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to the Republican party she thinks she can be secretary of Education??? She didn't even take the time and effort to inform herself about the common debates in the educational community, the rules, laws, etc... Also she is not that bright which is very obvious. She would not protect our children's rights

I understand why parents in bad school district areas want vouchers. Their smart kids can go somewhere where they can do better. That leaves lower test scores for the neighborhood school though.
