The people that are obnoxious to census workers are the same ones that have an entire RUclip channel devoted to vlogging their local police station and harassing people at their job for hours "because it's their right".

I worked for the Census in 2010 and one house I visited, the guy kept me there for an hour just bitching that one, they only scared about the sp*cs in my town and that he didn't want his tax dollars going to paying for me to harass him. I remember leaving his porch and thinking "You gripe about how much this costs, and you made it cost just a little bit more." because that entire encounter was a billable hour.

Funny how people think they are so important and that the government is after them. They only want to know who lives in the country, and if for some reason they needed your private info they already have it.

I worked the 2010 Census in a site set up for that reason. A 73 yr old woman working in the field physically going door to door was killed by a pack of dogs. Another Census Worker was attacked by a man with an ax. A Census Worker was invited into a woman's home and had a gun pulled on him. Census work can be dangerous, there has always been a problem with illegal communities hiding and not wanting to be counted, but they want the social service benefits that participating in the Census count affords communities which produces a shortfall for all the needy, which is not fair in my opinion. But what trump and ross are doing is to out non-citizens, it is true none of the personal Census information on individuals can be reported to anyone for 72 are so funny John.

    • Pam Timmins
      Pam Timmins Day ago

@Stephen2462 you are missing the point of the Census they allocate funding for all states schools, social services, etc. If a city or state's citizens are miscounted that state loses funding for those services, so you have a family of illegals getting what services there are, they come first if of Latin or Hispanic descent. When I worked the Census it was 300 trillion dollars allocated to all states by citizen count over a ten year period. A correct count is important for every state getting a fair share to help there indigent and children population, helps pay school lunches, free breakfast, ebt, medical, and financial help for those in need. Don't lump me in with trump, but I do know about working for the Census and how important it is to have a correct count of all people in this country.

    • Stephen2462
      Stephen2462 Day ago

Whether they participate in the census or not wouldn't effect their ability to receive benefits.
I'm not sure if you're co predicting yourself, or admitting you think Trump will do blatantly unetheical things with it.

Knowing that the plan all along was to use the census information to suppress minority votes is all the more reason for people not to trust it,you said it yourself, the census information by law is confidential, but further down the show you said it yourself that they were planning on using that same information to fuck with people's lives.....c'mon now John, only his supporters are dumb enough to trust him,no person in their right mind trusts this administration,no person with their mental state balanced is going to put their confidence and their trust in this administration,as long as this corrupt orange piece of shit is in the white house minorities and immigrants will never forget that they have to be looking over their shoulders.

  • XDigsX 13
    XDigsX 13 2 days ago

John no offense but it was against the law to use NSA surveillance on Americans as well,it was against the law to let the people of Flint drink water poisoned with led,it's against the law for a corrupt officer to kill unarmed people with absolutely no reason....many things are against the law but that doesn't mean the government won't do it or support those who do it.
So if you expect people to trust that the census information won't be seen or used by the government to deport people or jail them,I'm sorry but you're foolishly optimistic.

I know this is important. In my area it is used to decided how much grant/loans you get for public infrastructure as well as the interest rates. This is for such items as waste and drinking water systems, subsidized home loans and repairs from USDA as well as community grants for police vehicles, libraries, roads etc. I hope everyone gets counted. But.. it does seem there would be a better way for a count. I cannot even stop my information from being published online such as where I lived 20 years ago to my phone numbers. Seems the IRS has a better count and people actually want to give the information in order to get a refund.

Why do you have to count your people manually? This is so strange. In most countries I know of here in Europe, this is all done automatically, since your place of residence is always registered together with your name. It just sounds preposterous to have to rely on going door to door and ask the populace to volunteer this information. What am I missing? 🤔

Dear John Oliver, There is no way to start this right in a way that it actually makes sense what I want to try here. I love your show, it makes me feel the same way about the world as I feel about my life when things go bad, I laugh about it. Well, I do have researched quite a bit about social media, beginning with censorship on a very visual level, particularly in art. Then it went over to research about the effects of social media and the use of technology in general, considering voices like Yuval Noah Harari, Simon Sinek, Robert Sapolsky and Tristan Harris. I know the world sinks in utter chaos and as you rightfully say, next year is gonna be even worse, but also social media has become so important as outlet of opinions, stories and news that I think the topic of censorship on a level of exactly those 3 things mentioned may be quite worth discussing too. I feel censorship on social media combines a lot of topics together, like the race for our attention to earn money with it and the effects on mental health and shaping of opinions in society that you guys would do the best job possible of putting it in a way no one else could. Considering all aspects and make it understandable for all. So this is what it is, a cry for help on an issue that millions are suffering from. A cry in a wast mass, like asking a question in a group chat. but maybe I'm lucky. otherwise I'm just happy to express my gratitude towards existing humans like you. thank you.

John Oliver is wrong. The questions Trump mentioned are absolutely asked questions by the Census. Which is important since they form as proxies for econometric models. Like for example, your roof is a proxy for house value, or at least helps the estimate. Which is extremely important for income proxy which is important for economic policy
