Walmart kind of attracts a less then desirable crowd into town

There's no such thing as a discount lunch.
Walmart actually isn't the cheapest option. What they do, and people don't realise this, is they offer and advertise certain items at significant discounts but charge 20% or more for most other items. Because nobody goes to the store to buy only soup or only a certain kind of tshirt.
So even though you paid $10 less for those "rollback" items, you spent an extra $20 on your groceries overall. Meaning you aren't saving money.
True story, I was wondering why my grocery bill seemed higher after I started shopping at Walmart instead of my local grocery store. So I did some research. I went to both Meijer, Walmart and locally owned grocery store and shopped for the same kind of items I normally would have bought. As it turned out, Walmart was the most expensive option. Whereas I was spending $80 at meijer, at Walmart, the same stuff cost me $120. I even changed up the items just for comparison's sake, buying respective items that were on sale. And Walmart was still the most expensive.

Well Walmart doesn’t do say one thing and then do the opposite. It doesn’t say you’ll get 10/hr then give you 8/hr as far as I know. If they are anything like Target, they tell you everything up front and it’s your choice to work those bad hours and bad pay. It’s not something I’d choose for my main job but I’d work there until something better came along. It’s better to be payed minimum wage than nothing at all

Walmart is not the only company that
Shuts down small family companies in towns. Walgreens did the same.
Walmart does hire retired and disabled
    For greeters.
When Walmart came to town, Kmart
Went out of business, now Sears is going out, and maybe a Wisconsin
Dept store called Shopko may go
Out. If people are busy they want everything in one place which is nice
But if 100 million people shop there because it’s their only choice it’s not
    Freedom of choice.
I see positive and negatives from
Large corporations that own 20 different companies and Lg companies like Walmart.
I think every business should care about their neighboring family businesses because everybody wants to make enough to eat and send their kids to college or apprentice school
And still live joyful life. That should be
America’s focus. The country is strong
    When everybody finds purposeful work
    And fair pay.

I wish I had a Walmart in my European capital city where I live (in the European Union). Prices here are crazy. When I see the low prices you get in USA I hate you, lucky mother fuckers! Also, 8 dollars an hour seems good enough for me for unskilled or part-time workers. I am a GOOD software developer with university studies and I only get like 10 dollars an hour. AND prices are higher here than in US. I pay 1.5 dollars for a liter of gas for my car. 1 dollar for a liter of milk. 1 dollar for a good bread. FUCK YOU, lucky Americans! :)

I am in favor of free enterprise, but there are some one sided comments there like if Walmart was not there they would have to work somewhere else..... Like the store they put out of business who paid a decent wage and served the community. Or it's kinda like a raise or pay increase cause we save them money.... You don't pay employees enough to shop in any other stores??? On the other hand they do give back to communities and have raised wages and employed more full time workers who receive benefits due to public pressure SO.... protesting can be an effective tool for change.

If it is so bad, quit. Unskilled labor gets minimum wage. You want to make more than minimum wage? Then get an education and be willing to work your ass off like most successful people do. Don't piss and moan because you think the company owes you CEO wages for stocking shelves. Walmart is successful and that pisses of the folks who think they should have a big piece of the pie. There are many families that are only able to clothe and feed their kids because of Walmart's prices.

  • rbodell

Hay here is an idea, use your life as an example to kids that you are what happens to people without an education. Then go back to school and show them the difference. You also have to learn to live BELOW your means so you can SAVE for the future. I never had credit and I never had to work too hard either. but no, everybody quits school, goes in debt to live like the bank president does and then whines because they loose everything. Your life is what you make it. I quit school in the 7th grade and found out real quick what life was all about. NOBODY is going to give you crap. The director of the Alaska VA is personally covering up the denial of access to my medical records and treatment for cancer, but you know what, on good days I can split enough firewood. I worked at a Wal-Mart once. A month was all I could stand. Never again. The pay wasn't terrible but you only get 32 hours, and you're not allowed to get another job. That in itself should be illegal, since basically the workers are probably still on food stamps and therefore subsidized by the government (read: taxpayer). For low-incomes a second job should always be an option. The Wal-Mart managers were also straight awful. Their turnover was high.
Wal-Mart doesn't cause poverty, though, and never has. It takes advantage of it. It has since the beginning. It's in their business model to find cheap labor. If you're in a well-to-do area, chances are good you're not getting a Wal-Mart. One area I'm familiar with didn't ever get a Wal-Mart until its local version Wal-Mart equivalent store went out of business. The former store was probably more cheer-worthy than the Wal-Mart that replaced it. After all, no Wal-Mart I know has ever given kids free mutt puppies.
United Food and Commercial Workers union has about as much credibility as a $3 bill. When I worked at a grocery store I had to pay their dues, but both their wages and their hours were even worse than Wal-Mart's. They also enforced their union contracts with all the backbone of a pool noodle. Even so, they had a couple of good managers, so I worked there two years.
Then I worked up to a warehouse, and finally a machine operator in a window factory. The window factory's a pretty good job. The catch is you have to be willing and able to relocate.

Wal Mart was good before Sam Walton died. His heirs care only about how much money it makes for them.

Still, it's not a place to have a future UNLESS you want to go into management. The average job requires no special job skills, so there's no incentive to make a career out of working there if you don't go into management. This is true with any retail chain.

You don't have a healthy economy from corporatists stamping out all of it's competition start-ups before they can even compete fairly. A good capitalist economy comes from healthy competition and enough jobs available to provide for more people to be able to consume more.

The only thing I do not like about john stossel is that he does not believe in environmentalism. The earth is a big place, that's right. But 7.5 billion is a humongous number of people. There is nothing in our lizard brains that says "STOP CONSUMING so much, or all of our resources will be depleted and we will trash this planet" because that is not something that typically happens. It's not just 7 billion normal animals either. If we lived like cavemen, we would only consume 9 000 000 joules a day.The average household consumes 30 kilowatt hours which means about a constant usage of 1200 watts. Combine that with the resources and energy that industries use, we are consuming an incredible amount of energy which is used to completely alter our environment. If you are to divide landmass of the earth evenly among 7 billion people, each person would get 1 hectare. The earths resources don't seem so limitless anymore do they?

Facing the Truth: Conspiracy or Plan? 100 Years of Subversive Psychological Warfare Against America
America is facing a genuine Constitutional crisis. This crisis revolves around whether the US Constitution survives as the law of our nation or whether it is usurped by a hidden force of Communist subversives who have waged a secret psychological war against America for 100 years. Facing the Truth is an expository work about how the American consciousness has been intentionally tampered with through psychological manipulation leading to the preset political crisis facing the USA in 2018. This book is one of the most important presentations of information about preserving the American Republic on the eve of the 2018 midterm elections. Every American must read this book to know what is at stake in this election cycle. The preservation of America and the Constitution depends on it. This book is volume 4 of the Beyond Second Cognition series of books, but is written where it can be read standalone without requiring the previous volumes in the series.

If these people weren't working at Walmart they'd be doing some other low skill labor type job. If they had skills that companies require they would be making a better wage. But they don't so they're working a low paying job. That's just the facts of Life in the labor market. If politicians continue to interfere in the marketplace, forcing businesses to pay unskilled laborers higher wages, they will skew the free market in favor of labor and there will be unintended consequences. Everyone will get hurt in the long run. The businesses, the workers, and the government.
