I had one back in the mid 80s I got it for Christmas I'm not real sure what year it was but I lived in Kansas and my dad was in the military stationed in Kansas between 1982 to 1986 so it was definitely one of those Christmas I remember seeing it At Radio Shack I was kind of expensive it was my what was considered my big gift that year

Make the update video or ima snuff you out next time I see you at the store. Didnt have time to say hi last time, but since yu haven't made a update video ima confront you at the store and make a scene. Not fair to leave us hanging like that. Your a normal guy like the rest of us , that's 1 reason me and my friends didn't approach to bother you. But now since you left me hanging like a retard all that dont bother you shit is off the table. I know your rich you better have unlocked iPhones for me and my friends or else we will follow you home. But you are in no harm if you make the update video to the robotic arm in the next 2 weeks. Thanks for your cooperation.

Dave, I just rewatched this video and I remembered that you didn't replace the motor despite it was still working. I would recommend in the future to replace the hobby motor because of its age. Your motor sounded as if it was gritty and noisy. The best way to test is with it out of the toy. It should be fairly quiet and not sound like metal grinding. I do a lot of restorations on vintage toys with 3V hobby motors (BTW, that looks like the SVM-260 type motor) and I find an increase in performance. Most of the noise if from the plastic gears moving. Also, try lubricating the gears--it can't hurt. Run/Stop-RESTORE, M.

    Two thoughts.
    1) If the second unit is complete and works, clean it up...and find someone to scan the missing part for this one and 3d print it.
    2) With two working models, hack one with something like an arduinio for programmed movement. Fun Fun.

I have an Armatron Robotic Arm from Radio Shack too. I was a bout to through it out to save space in my office, but your video gave me renewed hope. I love about this toy because learning to use the twin joysticks requires dexterity and brain training to work the arm and grip quickly and efficiently. I believe surgeons who use robotics have to go through something similar. It should improve my hand-eye coordination. I'm 72 and have neuropathy in all extremities.

Didn't know it was that old, I didn't see one till 1992ish. When I was a kid I tried to recreate it in lego, but lacked the "loose" gears, which are needed at the joints (incidentally, I think that's also why the claw spins on its own while the base and elbows are moving). Although, now that I think about it, a U joint should suffice.

Somebody needs a Harbor Freight Ultrasonic. I have to say I'm really happy with mine. I work in a lab and we have two large expensive industrial ultrasonic cleaners and I kid you not, my HF model has better cleaning action. If you have a basket to keep stuff off the bottom, it really gets going. I've had mine over two years and not a problem. The reason most people kill theirs fast is because the thing doesn't have a drain, so people tilt it to pour water out. This gets water down into the electronics. If you siphon the solution out, it'll last a long time. I use mine to clean gun parts. I collect military surplus and those guns have been stored for decades in a very stubborn waxy grease called Cosmoline. Hot water and the ultrasonic cleans it right up. Sure beats wiping it all off, which takes hours. On those battery terminals, looks like they were brass or copper, it turns that color when you hit it with acid for a long period of time. Doesn't hurt anything...
I use your same picture trick when disassembling the internals of complicated guns, works great. You never have to wonder "did that spring leg go OVER or UNDER that pin? etc etc... If I have a lot of similar looking pins and screws and springs, I'll stick them to masking tape and put a number on them which tells me which picture in the series the part goes with.
On that missing gear, you could have tried to mold one with epoxy. Make a clay imprint of one of the other gears of the same size (if there was one) and fill that with epoxy. Let it dry, clean it up with a file and drill the hole. BAM, new gear. I've made plastic handgun magazine floor plates that way.

I would have definitely tried to copy the gear rather than hunt for a second unit! Now having a 3D printer, this is my weapon of choice, and i'm confident that i could make it very decently. But before that, some moulding and casting from basic epoxy would have done the trick. Good epoxy holds up REALLY well, better than original or printed parts!

I had one of these when was a kid (11-12 or so). Some time after my father picked up some solenoids at a Ham flea market. Using some relays I wired them to my Atari 400 via the joystick connector, which could be set to output via software. They drove the solenoids which were attached to the robot controls. It took a long time to tweak but eventually I was able to write BASIC programs that would do simple operations.
