The patent drawings are avaliable and it seems like it would be too complex and time wasting for average person to fix. It's great that there are people that are into things that others think are silly or useless because it keeps history alive.

I got one like new in the box for $4. It took 1 minute to fix. I just moved the arm around with it off hoping I wouldn't make it worse. The forced movement and clicking was a bit unnerving!) It realigned everything and works fine now.

The reason the small pinions break is that they are pressed on the shaft, putting the plastic in tension. over time, this tension causes the plastic to part in a narrow spot between teeth. The best way to fix this is to replace the gear with a brass one. I specifically keep a huge inventory of such gears for this purpose, scrounged from old toys, etc. (Others will most likely fail. Before they do, you can make molds and cast new ones from epoxy. 3D printing usually does not work well on such fine structures which are under high stress, even for bulk material. You could 3D print molds or a master from which you make a mold.

When i went to DeVry in the 80's for my final project I built a Vic20 controlled Armatron, I had to replace the single motor with six twelve volt motors (one for each of the six joints) I had to built bearing blocks from wood and used driveshafts to drive the individual functions. I then used a 4 bit to 16 bit decoder to run twelve transistors to operate the motors in each direction, Since there is no feedback sensors all command were simply timed by programming commands in Basic, I still have it kicking around somewhere BTW it was the coolest project that year at my school p

I got one of these for Christmas and played with it for years and years. It was one of my favorite toys. Just picking up random items and manipulating them was so ridiculously fun.
It's unbelievable how mechanically complex it was on the inside; and all running off of just one little motor!!
It could do two things at a time, often, but it was obvious that some of the actions relied on common gear mechanisms. For example, when you would move the arm at the elbow, the "hand" part would slightly spin. Fantastic toy. I am so sad that we don't see toys like this today: Surely they'd still do well!

But now since you left me hanging like a retard all that dont bother you shit is off the table. Dave, I just rewatched this video and I remembered that you didn't replace the motor despite it was still working. I would recommend in the future to replace the hobby motor because of its age. Your motor sounded as if it was gritty and noisy. The best way to test is with it out of the toy. It should be fairly quiet and not sound like metal grinding. I do a lot of restorations on vintage toys with 3V hobby motors (BTW, that looks like the SVM-260 type motor) and I find an increase in performance. Most of the noise if from the plastic gears moving. Also, try lubricating the gears--it can't hurt. Run/Stop-RESTORE, M.

    Two thoughts.
    1) If the second unit is complete and works, clean it up...and find someone to scan the missing part for this one and 3d print it.
    2) With two working models, hack one with something like an arduinio for programmed movement. Fun Fun.

I have an Armatron Robotic Arm from Radio Shack too. I was a bout to through it out to save space in my office, but your video gave me renewed hope. I love about this toy because learning to use the twin joysticks requires dexterity and brain training to work the arm and grip quickly and efficiently. I believe surgeons who use robotics have to go through something similar. It should improve my hand-eye coordination. I'm 72 and have neuropathy in all extremities.

You could've simply purchased the same ratio gear and bore it out if the inner diameter was too small rather than pay for a new used Arm. I thought you were clever???
