  • Golf's distance debate, explained.
Become a Video Lab member! bit.ly/video-lab
These days, pro golfers are hitting the ball far. Really far. And it's creating a problem: because modern golfers can reach the hole with fewer shots than before, older courses -- like Augusta National Golf Club, Oakmont Country Club, and others -- are becoming obsolete. Now, professional organizations, like the United States Golf Association, are struggling to find a solution for big powerful golfers like Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, and Tiger Woods. While the jump in distance is due to lots of factors, conversation is centering on the controversial possibility of redesigning the golf ball to reduce distance. It'd be the latest turn in the ball's long history: Golf balls have evolved from "featheries," to gutties, to balata balls, and eventually dimpled modern balls. But the biggest, and most recent change? The almost-instantaneous switch from wound balls to solid core multilayer balls like the Titleist Pro V1.

I'm not a golfer balls and sticks aren't my thing but an obvious solution would be to agree on the balls to be used before the whacking starts I'm serious if I don't like your balls I don't want to go whacking with you and if you have some kind of super techno balls and I only have my dimply old generic balls well whacking isn't gonna be much fun for either one of us now is it ? If your balls decide the outcome then forget whacking let's just see who's balls are more techno!!!

The first golf ball was made out of wood and it traveled about 75 yards on a good hit with a driver. The golf ball has been getting more efficient since then and over the years longer and longer. The new balls go a long way but they make the game of golf more exciting and watchable. I wouldn't change a thing about the golf ball.

    Dear Vox,
Why must you lie about EVERYTHING?
"It's the steepest part of this trend line" (referring to 2000 to 2001)
    2000 273.18
    2001 279.35
    Difference 6.17
    2002 279.35
    2003 286.30
    Difference 6.46
Just say "One of the steepest" and be honest for once.

Vox don't play golf i take it... because Wilson had a solid core ball - the Ultra back in the 80's. Not long after Wilson, there was Pinnacle- Titleist's other brandname that was solid well before the ProV.
Also, there is a PGA rule that a ball can only fly x feet\second when hit with a clubhead speed of y(sorry i dont know the numbers off the top of my head). Old balls were not far short of the PGA limit. So while the ball helps, club improvement, swing improvement also help.

all things being the same :
with a golf swing above 100mph a heavier golf ball will travel further. Golf ball rules are designed for pro tour players - "a ball must weigh LESS than"
with a golf swing under 90mph a heavier golf ball travels less distance than a lighter ball. A high handicap golfer is better off with a lighter ball.
So ball weight counters drag, and the big hitter has a much bigger drag problem. Ball weight also counters lift. But lift is good for the slow swing and probably bad for the big hitter.
When US pro golfers go to Britian they all use the British golf ball which is smaller. A smaller ball travels faster and further - more aerodynamic.
The answer to reducing the distance a golf ball is hit is to make the ball bigger - less aerodynamic.

It will fix itself when you start focusing on players skills rather on how can we "help them" to be better. Once the playing act itself will be considered a challenge not winning the challenge whatever it takes...just to get "the prize" and I mean lots and lots o $$ .... money ruins everything...

    • Raymond Menz
      Raymond Menz 8 days ago

Golf has gone from 5000 metres in length to 7000 metres. The cost of the extra land and maintenance is killing golf courses and clubs. Club fees are relatively higher so people are dropping out in the millions. As a golfer I regularly played 9 holes instead of 18.
Also Watson could have ended up in the trees - goodbye to millions.

I think the balls and the new technology do help with distance, but as of recent there have been so many courses that just have longer holes. I like the idea of just lengthening courses/adding obstacles rather than trying to change part of the game.

The distance argument (balls go too far) only relates to pros. The weekend hackers (99% of all golfers) still skunk it only around 180-220 yards, regardless of any new equipment. Also, there are already rules to limit the distance of both golf balls and clubs (compression/etc).

The clubs being high-tech is the biggest scam in golf history. You gain peanuts for buying a new set of club for thousands of euros. A driver from 2000 is 99.9% the same as a one from 2019. Design might be cooler and you maybe have a better game as you're excited about the clubs, but overall -- It's just a scam...

Would've been nice if they referenced *Japanense* *Keirin* races. All riders must use similar equipment sanctioned by the authorities. The bikes aren't the best bikes, but the laws ensure no rider is overly advantaged due to equipment. Why can't the PGA, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews etc. simply agree on a standard and have manufacturors such as Titleist continue to brand the balls for sponsorship reasons?

It actually wasn't the ProV1 that revolutionized the ball, it was the Nike Tour Accuracy. Tiger had been testing the ball for quite some time with Nike in 2000 secretly and eventually trialed it in some tournaments before publicly announcing that he was switching to the Nike ball. The ProV1 came out as a response to this ball.
