The game Surviving Mars lets us see what it would be like to manage living on the planet. Today Austin wanted to explore the ups and downs of terraforming Mars in real life. Could we ACTUALLY do it? Theorists, it's time to find out if Mars could be the next home of human civilization!

It's quite sad that most of us won't be able to experience the Mars terraforming. In spite of it, it is our duty to get our descendence the tools to expand.

I now have a new addiction now known as surviving mars. Hey Austin try the game Frost punk and figure the science out from that game. Matpak you should check it out too might make a good game theory.

Austin, This is one of my favorite videos you've done. Just the whole science behind something as cool as possible terraforming another planet. If you haven't read the book "The Martian" I highly recommend it, it's not about terraforming but a guys struggle to live on Mars for several years, and the auther went to great lengths to make sure his science was as accurate as possible

This is ignoring the fact that we find solutions to every problem we encounter and how dramatically inventing space tech advances all technologies. I honestly believe we will create solutions to all these issues because we will literally need to soon.

This is why I tell people not to listen to people saying “oh we’ll just colonize Mars if we can’t save the Earth” that idea is predicated on the best case scenario of a best case scenario. The entire idea falls to pieces if even one step of the process doesn’t go perfectly to plan.

If a satellite can create an earth sized magnetic field. Why not build two of them the same size and put them on Mars. That seems more efficient and safer (minimizing risk of asteroid impacts or other space debris and less chance to run out of power.) I know it was mentioned it just seems like a satellite would be a moot point

You're a little wrong there. Terraforming isn't complicated. Terraforming to support life, on the other hand...

Hi Austin, I advise reading the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson if you are indeed interested in it, obvs its an older book based off of slightly older science knowledge, but it most certainly is interesting non-the-less

I think it's easier to build many huge domes that could house an entire small town in which you'd live your entire life than terraforming the entire planet and keeping it that way.
Edit: I calculated that sublimating the ice caps would give off 0.0112% more mass to the martian atmosphere

Hey Austin (or anyone in the comments who knows), what is the name of the background song from 13:52 to the end of the video? I thought it was a really beautiful piece and would love to hear the full thing. It can be incredibly difficult to find classical music online when you don't know the composer's name.
